Why would Northern Illinois go to the Mountain West and leave the MAC? The travel cost seems prohibitive to offset any financial gain.

MWC is a higher paying Football conference than MAC?

Is legit...I used to live about a mile from the campus in San Antonio.

BTW, La Tech is expected to leave CUSA to join the Sun Belt.

The SunBelt is the perfect example of a small time D1 league that used to be the brunt of all kinds of jokes, as it was assumed it easily was the weakest of 11 D1A football leagues and also the weakest of these 11 in basketball. And now it may be 5th strongest in football.

How did that happen? The Sunbelt knew how to expand: focus on acquiring state Us located in states and TV markets that produce a lot of HS football talent and also have a large percentage of people living there who watch a lot of CFB on TV. And the focus was all on football

The Sunbelt began as a basketball league with no football. League leaders, not being fools, realized that basketball was a big fat nothing compared to football and then began making the switch. To get to where it is today Sunbelt leaders 'forced out' members and vetted correctly, including knowing which 1AA football powers were best to add.

The ACC needs to learn from the SunBelt

The PAC 12 should just be named the PAC. For the majority of the conference's life they were the PAC 8. Why keep the 12 in the name which was for only 13 little years?

That works too...or PAC8 for nostalgia

5th might be a reach this year, I think the AAC will be 5th. However you are right it was considered lower than the MAC when it sponsored D1 FB. They got strong on the old Big East FB model of grabbing big boy leftovers and taking chances on transfers and kids with issues in the past. They have some really good fan bases which helped: App St, James Madison, Georgia Southern and Marshall all can draw consistent crowds above 22K. App St is probably the top drawing team. Southern Miss is my choice for a dark horse. Coastal Carolina also has huge potential. They are going to give you free all you can eat and drink concessions this year with a paid admission. We'll see how that works

Edit add: ODU is another team with big potential. In a med/large metro with no major league teams and lots of HS talent

The SunBelt was fun to watch but they have some dreck in the league too. I think it'll be fascinating to see the G5/6/7 (whatever they call it) figured out who emerges as the top FB in the next 5 years. I'm putting my money on the PAC12.

Honestly MWC is really 5th ... at least as of last year. Once all the shifting is over I could see the Sun Belt at 6 or 7.

It is just FB, all other sports moving to the Horizon. A lot of travel but they were the furthest west team in the MAC. I assume they feel they'll make a few million more.

Agreed...'25 will be some leagues last chance at 5th for awhile. I think UNLV and Air Force made a mistake not going to the PAC12

I did not realize it was just FB, the Horizon League isn't too bad then for other sports. TY.

Once they add St. Mary’s to pair with Gonzaga as hoops only, I’d rename the conference the PAC 10

There is no reason for a conference to have a number in its name.

I would still like to see the PAC stay as an all State conference in FB. If they need more teams they can invite some form of Montana State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, or San Jose State.
