ADJW on Dino: "He's going to be our coach in 2021"

I don't know where people are getting this $17M to $20M number from. It can't be close to that. From what info I've gathered it seems likely he's getting $4M a year and had 5 more years added starting in 2019. Since 2 years are gone, SU owes him $12M tops, but usually when you "buy out" a coaches contract for dismissal, you only pay around 60% of that give or take. I'm thinking if SU termites him next year, they will be on the hook for about $5-7M which may vary a bit depending on how late in the year it is.

I do understand $5-7M is still a lot of money that the SUAD won't part with easily, but nowhere near that $17M number.

5-7 million better get the "big boosters" on the line. I still don't see Syracuse paying 5-7 million either unless next year is 1-3 wins

If anything, this statement says that his seat is hotter than we thought it was in my personal opinion.

this is a “you’re not getting fired this year but another year of this and your gone.”

I continue to believe that more than 5 years is needed to turn around a troubled program. Dino is a solid coach and, while I have low expectations for next year, I am hopeful that 2022 will produce a solid foundation for a winning program going forward.

I am heartened to see Wildhack is committed to Babers - it is the only sensible course. Dino has shown he is capable of making the tough decisions. Hiring Tony White took guts and it is going to pay off. I believe the defense will be the key to our future winning culture.

I am hopeful that we are building a reputation as a program that puts defensive players in the league. If so, we should continue to attract the quality we have in our younger players this year. Defensive back U.

Patience will pay off.

Thamel from October 17.

Regardless of the board's opinion of Thamel, he's not pulling the number from thin air. Dino also signed the extension after the team went 10-3 and USC was a name being thrown out, so it's likely that Cuse set themselves up to cash in.

Thanks for the link I was wondering where this came from. This has me really wondering as I do trust Thamel, but it still doesn't really add up. I'm guessing there's maybe an extra extension year I wasn't accounting for, and I kind of doubt he's accounting for a true "buyout". If Dino gets canned and wants to collect $4-5 a year he certainly can, but it usually means you'll be working for free if you want another job during that time. If coaches still want to work, they usually agree to a lump sum payment which is much less that what the contract was originally worth. Maybe at Dino's age they have to account for the worst case scenario which would be for Dino to retire and just collect his full contract over the remaining years.

$17 million, if true, is big boy money for sure. Which Cuse has been trying to do over the last couple of years - pay more like a P5. Makes you wonder though if Dino's agent got the upper hand in the negotiations / Cuse was desperate to keep him after 2018.

See, he's back for 2022 regardless of next year's results. For just facilitating our "recovery", we must win at least 4 games next year. Obviously, we hope to win more than that. But for me, 4 is the floor.

It goes both ways.

You want to keep a good coach.
You also want to get compensated if he gets poached, so you have the resources to hire a suitable replacement.

Nobody at that time was thinking - "what if we want to fire Babers"?

Pretty much EVERY P5 coach gets a contract with some sort of a buyout clause in it.

The top guys ones are MASSIVE.
Dabo's is FIFTY MIL. Jimbo's is $53 MIL.
There are SIXTEEN P5 coaches with buyouts in excess of $20 MIL.

In the ACC, after Dabo, the buyouts are:
Norvell - $19M
Collins - $17M
Bronco - $16.9M
Dino - ??
Fuente - $12.5M

Note that these are many of the 'newer' coaches (or in Dino's case, newly extended).
That's just SOP in a P5 conference now.

I like Dino. I like him a lot.
It’s just you are what you are.
A bowl season isn’t a lot to ask.
Our schedule isn’t exactly loaded.

If we play the 4 nonconference games and 8 league games 6-6 should be expected.

If COVID doesn't linger and mess things up, and force us to play a nearly-all ACC season again.

In a sense, I think that Wildhack's endorsement may have been in response to Dino's press comment the other day that these guys who "lost their seasons" are in limbo, didn't get better, are still where they were a year ago.

That was a loser / excuse of a statement, already looking to deflect blame for an expected to be poor year next year. Not happy about that. Wildhack probably wasn't thrilled, either.

Even if you had some donors with a blank checkbook they’d only get rid of the guy if they didn’t like him. from what I understand the people that matter the most love the guy and think he’s the right man for the job. They’re going to give him a coach Mac type of leash.

Took Mac 7 years and he survived the sack Mac campaign. HCDB gets 7 years imo and I think even if 2022 is 6-6 he coaches 2023.

So many forget how long coach Mac got. Good reminder.

blank check for the buyout if I win powerball or mega millions

I still think he could win here. I still like the concept that he's selling, even if we haven't been able to execute it. You win in a Dome by playing fast, but you have to be competent to move the ball, and competent in stopping it. We have been neither most years. We have shown "flashes' (don't get me "flashing back" - argh!), but we haven't been consistently good, not occasionally great. Isn't that the phrase?

Well, next year, let's get back to sea level. Let's not be completely underwater next year.
I think he could get his swag back, but this year is do or die.
If DeVito and his dad think that Iowa or Rutgers or some similar place is a better path to the NFL, then he may be done, and we're screwed for 2021.

Then Dino gets one last year. Sink or swim.
Honestly, I never thought it would come to this.
I never thought this team would fall apart so badly.

He’ll be in Orange in 2021.

It's a different world coaches dont get 7 or 8 years anymore.

I sincerely hope so. It will clearly be better for us if he is our QB, and we have a 10 deep offensive line as of Week 1 of next year.

Oh, and add in a full spring and summer camp season, so we can coach up these players, and implement more of the stuff the "new" coordinators didn't get a chance to teach last spring and summer.

That is the way I see it as well. And again, I think Syracuse is an extremely difficult job. I don't think any new coach really knows how difficult. 2 more years at a minimum. Some will get swept up in hysterics talking about the "death of the program" if you wait to long. Guess what? program pretty much been dead for 20 years, so BFD. What's funny it only took one really good year in 2018 and people were talking about the resurgence of Syracuse etc. Obviously we did not capitalize but maybe next time we do. It will be fine.

They do when they have already been resigned to a big extension which you keep ignoring. Syracuse isn't STATE U. Look at the mess FSU has become because they keep making bad decisions. Their new coach probably will stink too. They paid too much for the coach they fired after 16 games going in and coming out and it's cost them a TON of $.

Again, made the bed now lay in it. There is no T BOONE PICKENS coming regardless of what some want to believe. And why is it that Syracuse has to follow what so many of these dopes do anyway? keep chasing, keep chasing, like a guy sitting at a craps table getting cleaned out. Have you seen some of financials on these other programs that keep hiring and firing. I think Kanas is still paying Charlie Weiss? No thanks

Not concerned about what others are doing in that regard because it typically doesn't work

Everyone keeps saying oh the season was dead before arrival well if he had any inclination that players weren’t going to play he should of brought in more people. He should of had a good sense of the offensive lineman from Florida wouldn’t qualify. Frankly I’m tired of hearing he didn’t have enough players it’s ridiculous to me and unacceptable. We are a freaking D1 school! Qadir White for no run once again for a fourth year. Sometimes you just have to put guys out there d see what they can do you can’t tell me that Qadir White couldn’t of helped us this year on the damn line. Do other teams complain like ours does that they had to play during a pandemic or is it just our team that does a lot of complaining. I would like to hear coach say it’s his fault for not having enough quality players for whatever reason

The buy out numbers work both ways. The school has to pay it if they want to terminate the contract early and the coach has to pay it if they want to leave early.

Pretty sure that big buyout number was mutually agreeable because Syracuse was worried Dino might be poached by a big money school. After the 10-3 season, this was a legitimate concern. Heck, it was a concern even before that with some of the wins and progress the program had showed.
