Adrian Cole and Luke Benson in the portal.

Maybe he knows Williams is coming back.

Eventually, someone has to do some in depth analysis on all of this. Not just at SU, but everywhere.

If everyone who isn't going to start is going to take their ball and go home, and transfer portal kids are only going to go where they can find a starting job, something just isn't going to add up.

Maybe the real winners in all of this will be G5 or FCS schools.

And so it begins. We fire a coach to help you, and you still leave. Why night wait to see where it plays out? But this is the new world of football transfer portals. Got to get in early so you can grab a spot with a scholly.

Silly to wait especially for Benson. Get told you’ll be part of the offense, then you’re not. Kid isn’t going to wait around potentially harming is portal possibilities to find out his new OC coach doesn’t use the TE either. Or be told again he’ll be incorporated and not be.

Cole had some good play on the field when he was in this year. That loss hurts some. Depth is one thing, quality depth is another. Losing quality is never a good thing. Oh well, next man up.

Reminds me when more kids went hardship (before the G League, etc was a thing) then there were draft spots in the NBA.

I get if a guy gets a position switch or something like that, but otherwise the two year recruiting process should mean more than a few week whim.

The difference is the new HC wouldn't have to win six games next year to keep his job, Dino does. Losing two likely starters next year is exactly what Dino doesn't need.
Doesn’t any coach next year, Dino or otherwise, have to win at least 6 games next year? If a new coach came in and won 5 wouldn’t people here still be pissed? Or are they okay just hoping that it will lead to something bigger? What if the next season afterwards is 5 wins too?

I’ve said this a few times recently. I think what happens is the portal within a few years, that while still a thorn in the side of programs, the realities of the portal for most of the players prevent so many jumping in to it. Ultimately most of these players want to play D1, IMO. Once they see that with HS players still being recruited and lots of competition in the portal, there aren’t a lot of spots for the amount of players looking to make moves.

Normally I get upset about these things, but we literally did not use Benson for what he is designed to do. I have zero issue with him leaving. I hope he goes to a school that values his talent. He was one of the most misused players on the entire roster.

From a depth perspective, Cole hurts. But I'm fairly confident we can go out and get someone from the portal that is just as good as him. I really hope G. Williams is back, but from what Jeremycuse said, that may not be the case. That would really sting.

I knew about Benson. Surprised about Cole. He is in line to start at CB. At the same time he hasnt shown anything great. I think we can bring in someone that can do what he does. The freshman CB's that are coming in are taller and more athletic. I wish the best for them both. Maybe they find a P5 school that can get something out of them.

The real winners will be those perennial top ten or top 20 teams who will accept a purge of their non-contributing players so they can stock up on more “sure things.” Teams like SU will grab some kids here and there, will lose some kids here and there, and the only thing the portal will mean is an inability to keep a kid long enough to develop him.

Anyone who thinks that every change - transfer portal, NIL, conference expansion, etc. - doesn't primarily help the top teams is either not paying attention, or can’t see reality when it slaps them in the face.

Yeah, just seems like a lot of these kids are going to find out the grass isn't greener. This first group will be the pioneers (or the guinea pigs).

I think 99% of the board would be understanding if a new coach came in and had a rough first year possibly even 2. Outside of Saban or Bellichek coming here I think most people understanding its going to take some time.

Benson was a total non factor this year. He made a couple catches two years ago but he dropped more than he caught. I‘m not sure he ever blocked someone. Cole provided depth and could have helped next year.

2022 Cuse might be an interesting experiment for all of CFB in regard to what happens when someone wins the portal cup; do we take a step back, or improve? Could go either way really, not withstanding the harder SOS.

Nah, there'd be more forgiveness on a new coach.

Dino's shown he can lead us to multiple seasons where we don't qualify for bowl eligibility.

A new coach gets a fresh clock.

Maybe but Hackett didn't exactly light it up there this year. Needs to go somewhere that can coach up TEs
Was that an issue of coaching, utililization or talent?
