Paul Chryst, new Pitt head coach, is set to name Jonathan Smith as his QB coach. Let's take a look at Smith's background: Smith was a four-year starter at QB for Oregon State where he set numerous passing records most passing yardage (9,680), total offense (9,209), and touchdown passes (55). He ended his career ranked third all time in Pac-10 history in passing yards and total offense. After graduation, he was a grad assistant at OSU under Dennis Erickson. He then coached QB's for 6 years at the University of Idaho before being named the offensive coordinator and QB coach at the University of Montana, where he led very successful offenses for the past two years.

Now lets take a look at the background of SU's QB coach and OC: He played linebacker for UC Davis, spent a year assisting the linebacker coach at UC Davis after graduation which was then followed by two years at Stanford, one as assistant to the offensive and defensive coordinators and one as recruiting coordinator. After that, for the next four years and before being hired as the QB coach by Marrone, he was an offensive quality control coach for two pro teams.

Smith had a very successful career as a D1 QB and had eight years of QB coaching experience before being named QB coach for Pitt (which rumor has it will soon happen). Hackett never played the position and had zero years of QB coaching experience before being named QB coach for SU.

Awesome! Coach Chryst is a genius and you recognize genius at work. Keep up the good work.

Turner Gill was a successful college QB too.

Isn't "Seemore" a porn stars name?

I've been screaming from the mountaintops that Nassib needs a dedicated qb coach for some time. My opinion is that we'll never have a successful QB without a coach that can guide him through the intricacies of the position.

good post. It is a fact that Hack doesnt have any experiance. Of all of our assistant coaches he is the one that just doesnt make any sense unless Doug just wants a yes guy as his OC which is pretty obvious

Agreed. It is beyond me that our OC and QB coach has zero experiance, never took a snap in his life or played any position on O. QB is the most important position on the team. How does Hack gain the respect of a player when he has no experiance. Until this post i actually thought that the kid had played QB. Reading his bio was like turning on the lights for me now i understand why our O was so messed up this year. Really blows me away that we could actually hire this kid to run our O and coach our QB's.

hackett was born with the knowledge -he was bred to be a qb coach by his dad

little things like understanding the position you coach arent high on the priority list -

honestly-it makes no differance -many many many coach's coach a position they didnt play- a guy can cut it or he cant-hackett cant but being a freind of marrones he has no worries-if he was capable we would have seen a second qb at one point this season, nassib might have understood his spot better by watching from the sidelines for a few series

I guess but it seems that most position coaches have had some degree of either playing the position and or coaching it at some level prior to being handed the keys to a D1 program let alone the OC job. Hack has had no direct experiance playing or coaching QB's nor has he had any experiance as an OC. For that matter i dont think he has ever held any position job coaching any position on the O side of the ball. Out of all of the potential coaches that Doug could have picked for this crucial position doesnt it seem odd that Hack was given the job?

I wonder if he isn't viewed as a Brian Schottenheimer situation - a young, up-and-coming offensive mind shaped from growing up in a coaching family, who stopped by Syracuse long enough for a cup of latte (1999) on his way to his current gig as the Jets OC.

Lets hope so.

Our DC played QB -- so . . .

Hackett had no experience as a QB coach when hired; now he has two years on his resume, and his QB has improved each year. You have two decision points -- would you hire him with no experience? Would you hire or retain a coach with two years of experience as a position coach?

this is like the steve bush argument 10 years later... I don't think any coach could get more out of Nassib at the position, we need to recruit better at the position

Funny you mention Schottenheimer ... he might be available in a week.

Here are the QB coaches for the current top 10:
LSU- Kragthorpe
Alabama- McElwain
Oklahoma State- Monken
Stanford- Hamilton
Oregon- Helfrich
Boise State- Pease
Arkansas- Petrino
Wisconsin- Chryst (before being named head coach at Pitt)
South Carolina- Mangus
Kansas State-Miller

Nine out of the 10 QB coaches played QB in college. The only one who didn't, Del Miller at KSU, has decades of experience as a QB coach and OC. This is probably accidental, though. I highly doubt there is any correlation between a team's success, QB competence, and a QB coach's playing experience.

Exactly. Bush was a horrible position hire and so is Hackett.

Our DC was an accomplished DC prior to being named to that position by Syracuse. If Hack had been an OC at Stanford, Michigan... We wouldnt be having this discussion. Do you really think that Ryan improved this year?My point is that of all the position coaches on the O side of the ball why hire someone with zero experiance and name them OC? It makes zero sense other than the fact that Doug is actually our OC

IB Hack did a horrible job this year. We returned a veteran O and couldnt get out of our way. Our play calling was so bad his use of players in certain situations baffeling the lack of discipline and time management a complete joke. He almost made me think that Parianightmare was back in the box. Why this kid was hired and than promoted to OC and why he is keeping his job is a mystery. I hope he went home for Christmas and got a crash course from his Dad.

No, Marrone did a horrible job with the offense, it's his scheme. Hackett is keeping his job because his boss feels he is worthy of keeping it. Nassib has a limited skill set, you aren't going to get much more out of the kid.. we have been down this road 100 times, since McNabb, hire a qb coach a better OC, that is our problem, it's the coaches!!! Been going on for 15 years now. My point is this, this is Marrone's offense, Hackett understands what marrone is trying to do and he is carrying out orders. Marrone isn't changing and I personally think that hiring and firing assistants every year is not a good idea. Let the head coach run the show, if he fails get rid of him but you need assistants who are familiar with what you are doing

i agree seemore. anyone on this board continuing to defend hackett just doesnt get it. they should be after watching the last few weeks of bowl games with some featuring teams with the same talent level as us on offense that know how to scheme and attack a defense. position coaches need experience playing the position they are coaching! hello! how can a kid learn and have confidence in his coach when he knows he has never been in his shoes?

Did it ever occur to you that the reason SU has had so many problems recruiting the QB position is because student athletes and their advisers have realized that the competence of the position coach is problematic?

Game, set, match.

This offense is Marrone's. It's below averageness was not because of Hackett.

Yeah, that must be true. QB is not a very important position on the team and it really shouldn't make any difference who is coaching the position. Sometimes I wonder why SU even has a QB coach. Why not just save some money and assign wonder Doug to coach them up amidst his other duties?

Do you honestly feel that if Kevin Rogers never left we would have had so many issues getting a QB here? Having a good QB coach helps in recruiting the position. Do you honestly feel that Rogers would not have gotten more out of the QBs we have had since? Do you not think an experienced QB coach would be able to help Nassib over come the horrendous down the field passing? How is Hackett supposed to help Nassib when he has never been a QB coach in his life?

We have two open positions on the staff. At the very least I want to see a STs/DB coach brought in (fine with a guy like Mallory) and a QB coach brought in. If Marrone wants Hackett as his OC then fine. I can live with that. Honestly I don't think he is all that bad of a play caller. My issue is more the system. But let Hackett be OC/TE. Get a QB coach here. Player development is huge at a school like SU because we will NEVER out talent opponents. So why does the MOST important position have no one developing it?
