I don't recall feeling that way about Merchant. And I have never heard anybody express what you have expressed.

I guess it may be true, but it's something that I have never read or heard stated.

But setting aside the quips that apparently bother you, Larry Merchant - a former sports writer in Philadelphia - knew his stuff - he knew and understood the sports business and the games themselves. I'm pretty sure that he is considered an all-time great in his business.

He may know baseball - I don't know for sure. But I think most would agree that Bud Poliquin doesn't know or understand the games that concern us on this board - football and basketball. And, other than baseball, I'm not sure he truly loves sports in the way that most sports journalists love the games.

I think that from a technical standpoint, he is a very good writer.

He turns phrases and uses analogies or metaphors quite well.

I'm not sure it's true sports journalism.

But, I have to say this - his two columns on Scott Shafer after the NC State game were I think the essence of sports journalism.

I think those columns - agree with them or not - had true impact and touched the reader responsive chord.

They were powerful. And, that is not what we typically see with him.

His football since the early 2000s have typically addressed the same old tired issues - the team's mediocre won-loss record over a given time period - the number of empty seats in the Dome and the salary of the head coach.

Of course the "close your eyes" thing was corny... BUT... that is *exactly* the kind of stuff that 17-22 year olds eat up.

Just look at all these recruits and players Twitter and Instagram. They're loaded with cheesy inspirational stuff.

What Babers does is exactly what needs to be done to sell these kids on his system and the program.

If the O actually takes off and he can sell that along with the corn and cheese... Katie, bar the door.

What's that saying again about a broken clock?

I think he tries wayyyy too hard with the metaphors and because of it he often loses his way on the point his column is trying to make.

I admit I was lost at the end of the season. It was getting to the point where I wasn't even getting upset anymore, and wasn't even checking up on recruiting. I couldn't even have imagined bringing Shafer back. The fanbase definitely wouldn't be buzzing the way it is now. We went from stale to refreshed with this move. Who knows how this will ultimately turn out, but I know I will be locked in for the next 8 months, counting the days until we get to see this offense throwing the ball all over the yard inside the Dome.

As much as I liked Shafer off the field, I agree with you completely.

Dino really has given a shot in the arm to the fanbase. I just hope we add a few thousand season ticket holders before the start of next year.
