Anyone who thinks Fran isn’t our guy needs to stop huffing keyboard duster and get back to reality

Let’s hope so. Cant have another Nintendo reset button season. I can’t imagine what season ticket sales will look like next year coming off this one.

I think there are too many questions for next season. It is a rebuild season where I fear we see a 5-7 record. Which then makes 2027 7-5 or bust.

The problem is my mind is the staff thinking they had a backup plan. They did not and that’s coaching malpractice. Crap happens, I get it. But not having someone serviceable after all the qb competition nonsense they were trying to stuff down our throats is unacceptable.

Fran is still the guy. He’s learning. I think this will be a tremendous learning experience for him.
I think they had a plan but Ricky was a bust and they spent nil dollars on him. They went got Steve when they realized he was not the answer. If Steve stays healthy none of these conversations are happening. He got hurt and the wheels came off.
My issue is once Steve went down not trying to modify the O to make it at least functional.

Correct. And Nixon shares a lot of blame on that. Plus our OL coach.

Wasn’t Marrone our guy? Then Dino our guy?

By the way.. I accepted weeks ago the season was over and obviously Fran needs to come back.

Just speaking generally that this stuff like life can be very fluid and predicting the future… good luck.

There were prominent posters here who, once upon a time, lectured us all that Greg Robinson was assuredly going to put the program back into great standing. And that if we didn't understand that then we were idiots, basically.

Which is to say that no one knows anything. We're all just speculating with varying levels of information.

Reading through all these posts sounds a lot like what’s happening with the basketball program, but Fran seems to be getting a pass. He loses his best player and the team totally tanks. Red loses his best player last year and this year and he can’t coach. In basketball one player is 20% of the starting team. Angeli is 1/22 of the starting team and they can’t be even a little bit competitive. I have a lot of faith in Fran and I think he will turn it around. Fran has a lot of money behind his program and don’t be surprised if he really gets it going in the portal. The jury is still deliberating on Red and deservedly there are questions with the product on the floor. In basketball one stud can completely turn around a team. Red has good players, but he does not have a stud who can take over a game. In football that player is usually the quarterback. We saw last year with McCord and with Angelli this year, what that looks like. We’ve also seen what it looks like when you don’t have a quarterback. The bottom like is great players makes coaches and teams look good.

In football the QB touches the ball every single play, in basketball Donnie touches the ball on 50% of possessions at most and is the focal point 10-20% of that. Thats not to say the loss isn’t huge but it is like losing a starting RB or wide receiver, it’s much more manageable.

I don’t agree. The circumstances that led to Fran and Red becoming HC were wildly different. Losing your QB1 is also a significantly bigger negative that losing a guy like Freeman. There’s no more important player in sports than QB1 and it isn’t particularly close.

Not to mention that (a) this is Fran’s first bad year, while Red already got that mulligan last year, and (b) Fran is hardly getting a pass. There are unhinged posts demanding his firing on this very board.

And Freeman still hasn't played enough games to prove he can be a difference maker. He didn't come in last year and play like a DC or Melo, or Pearl, Flynn, Ennis. Freeman might turn out to be great but so far he has been just ok.

Exactly, great post.

If one looks back at my posts when he went down, that is exactly what I said, run option, wildcat, or combination of, almost criminally stupid to try and force the routine O with these kids.

Not for nothing, but there is a valid reason for criticism this year. I'm not sure that ignoring the obvious and telling ourselves that we will never do better is the right response.

Fran has done fairly well, but one good year does not make you immune to analysis in the future. This year has been just as bad as last year was good. He's in Dino territory so far. If he starts referencing movies, we are cooked.

That is why Nixon needs to be sent packing, he is the OC. It's his job to put the players he has into position to win games. It's not his job to try to fit players into his system, when they don't fit.

I don't take Nixon's strengths foregranted. He ran a great offense last year perfect for the Dome.

I get what you are saying but it's not like another coordinator is an automatic upgrade here.

The ND game was bad. This season was bad. It was doomed and lost after Angeli went out. There is no realistic option who will be able to get our program to primetime. Not now, probably not within the next 25 years.

Let him get coaching reps and just accept that this is a lost season. People are so quick to forget that we just came off a 10 win season. Because they’re huffing keybord duster.

Come back to reality and chill out. If anything this is the best time to offer Fran an extension and lock him up long term.
Lock him up long term ? You’re huffing something more potent than keyboard dust

This is like finding out your girlfriend is cheating on you and instead of debating if you should end it or give her another chance, you instead just jump to marrying her.

sure . lock him up at loser pricing. like 20% of league average. that's what he earned this season.
buy low and sell high. don't need to be warren buffet to know those economics.

Fran deserves another year for the 10-3 season and Holiday Bowl win. There are a lot of concerns that need to be addressed this offseason. Next year has to be better. Player retention is now becoming a concern. Fran recruits are starting to bolt. Our coaching staff could use an overhaul. If an NFL caliber QB is required to run this offense it just won’t work consistently at SU. Even the big boy schools would struggle to have NFL caliber QBs each and every season let alone us. Our defensive coaches need to be completely changed over. Fran will have a lot of motivation to bounce back next year. I have my fingers crossed but I wouldn’t give out an extension and lock ourselves into another Dino situation
