The Andrew Luck announcement sounded like “first of its kind” but all sorts of programs have these… except our reports to Fran, right?
Andrew Luck is more unique in that it sounds more like a Pro Sport GM role (MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL) GM role in terms of responsibilities. NCAA GM roles typically have nowhere near those responsibilities.
In pro sports, the GM has the ability to choose and fire the coach, and also is responsible for the players that become part of the franchise. (not the coach)
College Basketball has lots of "GM"s. But they seem to be operational roles with newer responsibilities due to NIL and transfers and the extra work in relationships that is needed for that. The coaches, not the GM's, have had autonomy as to which player gets on their roster.
