BC Part II Post Game

*physical skills. Sure.

I’m referring to between the ears. You can get away with low basketball IQ in high school / AAU. You get on the big stage, everything is moving faster, so much information to process on the court. I believe it’s too much for some of our guys regardless of their physical skills.

Constantly going under screens or not hedging is Exhibit A. I can’t believe this hasn’t been addressed a million times in practice. If I’m wrong, I guess Red is worse than I thought and I already don’t think he’s going to figure it out.

So we somehow got the stupid players on top of everything else??

You think Eddie screwing up screen defense repeatedly hasn’t been addressed in practice or during timeouts? At some point, Eddie has to execute. Probably paying him too much to bench him.

LOL, like I said, I’m probably reaching. We are stuck with Red next year so looking for any hope next year could be improved.

Occam's razor...

When D1 players do the same stupid stuff over and over, it's in probably not the players.

This isn't 8th grade modified ball.

A battle of 2 equally inept teams. Neither able to seize the game. But it's sure better to win than lose.
BC tying 3 at end of regulation was another Red special. Up 3 with a few seconds left how do you allow BC to inbound and give the shooter behind the arc 5 feet of open space? Good grief. Coming out of a timeout that's terrible coaching.

Up 7 at one point in OT.

Eddie has no concept of defense, or game situations, and that's on the coach. It doesn't make any difference if your coach has no idea what he is doing.
Note that it was also said REPEATEDLY on the board this offseason by idiot fans that teams would put Eddie in the blender non stop because our guards can't guard and Eddie can't rim protect and, sure enough, that's what happens. Every game.

The last line I saw before game time was Syr -8.5. So someone taking BC and the 8.5 must be in agony after being so close to winning the bet four times.
I had +7.5 with parlayed with a Devonte Smith prop. Brutal.

I do wonder why Moore who was having his best game in weeks only played 17 minutes. Kid was 3-3 from the arc. Was surprised when he was pulled out even in the first half. I think he had all 11 of his points then. Reds management of the bench remains a mystery to me.

CW games suck.
Had to wait for a recording.

Very disconcerting to be up 5 with a minute remaining and then notice the recording still had an hour to go. Kinda spoiled the (not-so-much-of-a-)surprise of the regulation ending. Would have predicted someone hitting a three with JJ defending either way, though.

We actually did a few things much better (than usual) today. First half showed a lot of ball movement. Crisp, decisive passing. Unselfishness. And McLeod had a really nice run. Moore had a really nice run.

And then they didn’t play in the second half or three overtime periods. That’s… um… baffling.

Sucks to be even with a team with a worse record. At home. Battling for the last ACC tournament spot. The Pity Bowl.

Was there a reason that JB didn’t show for the Final Four tribute?

Did anyone notice if Chance was on the bench? I didn’t see him, but I was fast-forwarding through all the stoppages.

I'm glad we won, but Red needs to take the high road and walk away. If he cares about SU, he understands that he is not the coach that gets us to where we should be. He isn't the guy, there is no shame in that. Let's get a great coach in there.
No one quits a 3million dollar job without a more lucrative offer. And he’s never going to get a matching or more lucrative offer.

The best anyone does in this situation is to vow and try to be better going forward. I don’t doubt he’ll try. He's a competitor and probably also rationalizes this as a fault of talent. No one close to him is going to tell him he doesn’t know how to coach. Even JB is telling media he needs more time and more NIL. Who’s he going to listen to, a HoFer or a bunch of <6’5” internet warriors?

My 10 yo son said the S word for the first time around me after that three went in. "Are you shttng me?!" And I didn't even get mad because I felt the same way.
"Indeed, son, they are."

of course not, but Red is not the answer. The most we can hope for is he replaces at least 2/3 of his staff with coaches that can actually coach. It still doesn't make Red a good coach, but the right guys in those positions would make us at least competitive.

Agreed, but he’s not going to fire Griffin or Straun or the guy he just hired. At best, he’ll supplement the bench with as many spots as the rules allow. But that requires money from the school…. And an admission that the current guys can’t do the basic job.

The celebration for the 1975 team was planned some time ago and obviously Boeheim decided to skip it. He had to know his absence would be noticed. If there was some sort of beef between Boeheim and some members of that team he should have just swallowed his pride and showed up to the event. But that’s not Boeheim. He’s stubborn to the core.

If there was a member of the Cuse media who had any stones the following questions would have been asked of Red:
-why did you have Cuffe and Carlos on the court for the final portion of the game? What did you think you were getting out of those guys that might not be evident to the rest of us?
-given that Eddie weighs at least 280 pounds and has trouble moving, do you think it makes sense to play him all of the second half without a break especially considering that McLeod has been relatively useful the past two games? Were you surprised that he was clearly winded in the second half and in the overtimes?
-Was there a reason Choppa did not see the floor for most of the second half after giving you a lot of offense in the first half? In a lost season, doesn’t it make sense to give a potential building block for the future some experience in a close game when he is already playing well?
-how does having JJ bring the ball up and having Carlos run to the corner and stand there help the team? If Carlos isn’t running the point don’t you have better shooting options at the two?
-why was Taylor relegated to the bench as the lead dwindled down in regulation but you saw a fit to bring him back in for the overtime?
-when Davis or Lampkin is backing his man down do you tell the other four guys just to stand and watch or do you ever consider having somebody cut to the basket?
-on the game tying three at the end of regulation, putting aside JJ running under a screen, which has never been corrected, were your players told to foul as soon as the ball was inbounded?
-when you were playing offense defense, why were you not taking Bell out for defense?
-did anyone explain to Petar there was no need to foul or to risk a foul when we were only down one with 40 seconds left and at some point shouldn’t he stop complaining when he mauls guys?
-in an obvious situation where BC is going to foul, doesn’t it make sense to take Eddie off the court?

We have way more talent than Boston College. They are awful. This should’ve never been anywhere near as close as it was.

I criticize Red for a lot of things (100% agree our centers should have been parked on the bench, that’s Red). I just can’t believe he’s this bad coaching how to defend screens. I have to believe our guys are just not capable of the level of real-time thinking required to take what they are taught and apply it in games like defending screens. It’s just sad. I may be reaching, but really hoping that’s a large part of it so there’s a chance all of our new players next year are not as mentally challenged.
Red’s answer a few weeks ago on the radio when asked what his philosophy is defending screens, he initially scoffed at the question (which really made it seem like he didn’t know how to answer it), and then said they do what every team in the country does…try to blow up the screen and help with the passer’s defender. This was an actual head coach from a P4 division one team. The players have no idea how to defend a screen because they are not being drilled the correct way to do so. Plain and simple. Very frustrating to watch.
