is hospitalized with an unspecified internal injury after being body slammed in the first quarter last night against Clemson. I was surprised there was no flag thrown on that play. It was a violent hit after Brown had thrown the ball. I think BC deserves credit for keeping the game close pretty much all night while playing the #2 QB who is a Soph and who reportedly hadn't seen action since September 22nd. Brown going down enabled Clemson's defense to key even more on AJ Dillon, and it looks like later in the second half Dillon hurt his ankle. We will see how these injuries play out over the next 2 weeks leading up to the game with the Cuse.

That play where Brown got hurt would have be a penalty in the NFL with the new rule change. The defensive play clearly threw all his weight onto Brown.

Clemson gets away with a lot of stuff because their the bell cow. Late rough hits out of bounds and to the helmet area all game long.

In the NFL, it clearly would've been, no questions asked. From just watching the play live, and the re-play, it appeared clear that that #42 (who hasn't missed too many meals) purposely wanted to make sure his rotund body cemented him into that cold turf. Even when the lard got up, he implanted his chest and used it against Brown's body.

The first game of the NFL season this year when the Browns played the Steelers, Myles Garrett almost sacked Big Ben, but Ben got rid of the ball just a moment sooner. Garrett's body partially landed on top of Ben, which there was really no way to avoid it by the specific angle Garrett was on in route to getting to Ben, and Garrett got flagged for unnecessary roughness.

In comparing the two, last night's was night and day different, with last night's seemingly being considerably more egregious.

I'd imagine he will be out for Syracuse...won't help us get to 10-2 but it might get us to 9-3.

The Clemson fans were whining a ton about our "dirty" play taking out Sunshine this season...but they forget plays like last night and the WWE move on us in 2016.

Rumor is He’s got internal bleeding he may be done for season

It is an illegal play at the college level to continue to tackle and drive into the turf any player that you know does not have the ball.

After that play I was waiting for a reaction from Kirk Herbstreit, but he never commented. Chris Fowler questioned the hit and called it violent, but Herbstreit pretty much remained silent.

Meanwhile Clemson's offense came back down to earth.

Doh, I just noticed the other thread on this topic.

It sounds like you think we will lose to ND. 10-2 all the way. Big upset this Saturday in Yankee Stadium.

BC’s D is pretty solid. Their strength has always been the OL. That stays the same. I expect it to be a game.

I've watched that play 5 times, and I really don't see how it could definitively be called illegal. I can honestly see a flag, or no call. To me, it's that close.

I just have a hard time imagining a player on most other teams knowing that the QB doesn't have the ball and continuing the play in such a manner with intent to injure the QB and not getting a personal.

Szymt happens when you're rushing in at 100 MPH, your head down, focused on bringing down the QB. You can't just stop on a dime.

As I said, for that individual play, it could have gone either way. It's not as if the lineman took 3 steps after Brown got rid of the ball before hitting him.

As I recall the ball was still being released when the hit took place. Therefore he still had possession of the ball when the hit started. Am I misremembering it?

You don't want to give the QB some protection there. They are usually in a vulnerable state looking downfield and not fully focused on defending themselves.

Wasn't an illegal play unless you watch it in slo-mo. QB throws the ball, defender is already starting to lower his head to hit the QB, he takes 1 - 2 steps as the ball is released and hits the QB. Pretty bang, bang play. Nothing to flag. He also didn't intentionally drive him into the ground, he went through the player. He didn't lift him up more, throw him down unnecessarily, he just drove through his tackle. Pretty standard play. We've had a ton of similar plays by SU defense on other QB's.

I'm guessing you never played football with a helmet and running full steam toward the person with the ball.

Penalties are in place in order to make players err to the side of safety. So guys don't end up in the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Penalties aren't in place to prevent injuries, they are in place to stop reckless plays. There was nothing reckless about the play, it was a football play. Maybe watch the reply again before commenting.

By your logic, NASCAR races would look very different if rules were in place to prevent anyone from getting injured. Football involves people hitting each other, people will get hurt. It's the unnecessary and reckless hits that have to be stopped, not plays that end with someone getting hurt. There's a big difference.

How many steps do you get? I could see and the ref could see and he could see that the ball was released.

If remember correctly Freeney had a lacerated liver. Freshman year missed the rest of the season.
