Belichick to UNC

He gets to spend all spring and part of the summer seeing if it will work, and gets paid a million dollars when he decides to leave.
Then leaves everyone else to clean up his mess.
He has to pay the $1M.

Still, it's a great deal for Belichick.

There’s a piece by Seth Wickershan that ran today which details how Bill and his crew (Patricia, McDaniels, Lombardi, etc.) did a weekly Zoom call to discuss the state of the NFL, weekly matchups, what teams could be landing places for Bill and the like.

It got me thinking that there may be a real “romantic” element to this move by Bill. He’ll assemble his band of lackeys, live in a beautiful college town, and turn around a consistently underachieving program. It’s like Hoosiers.

His spiel about creating an NFL feeder program seemed so ignorant to me. Like, other college coaches aren’t trying to lure players to their schools by telling them they’ll develop them for the pros?

I mean, in his last few years in New England, Bill wasn’t particularly good at identifying college players who could be good in the NFL. Now he’s going to have some magic system to develop guys and send them off to the league with guarateed success?

I love Bill, he gave me 20 years of football bliss. But this whole thing is weird.

There is very little sadder than watching someone who accomplished great things be unable to realize it was time to do something else. Mays on the Mets, Broadway Joe on the Rams…I suspect BB at UNC will be on that list.

If it goes that way, it’s too bad - I thought he did good in media this year and thought he was on his way to a graceful transition to a new phase of his life.

Coming late. This is huge for UNC. I highly doubt he will fail.

To me, this hire enhances the reputation of the ACC.

The greatest coach in the history of the sport wants to compete in our conference. It’s a big deal.

And I think we see him in the Dome next fall?

I Believe Bill's biggest problem will be convincing the Mother's he is the right coach for their son's.
Or be there for 3 or 4 years.

Still, those rings on his fingers will dazzle a lot of recruits and parents as well.

As I said yesterday, BB and UNC are using each other to get something out of this. BB stays for a year, fixes his reputation, and jumps back to the NFL. That buyout dropping off a cliff is proof of that
The whole last year in the media was his "fix my reputation" year. And he still had NOTHING. NFL teams do not want him as a GM. They want him as a coach only. And he won't take a job with no control.

The problem is his reputation is a guy who wants control, which is unappealing to NFL front offices they way the league is structured now. Every front office will fight like hell to avoid hiring him. I don’t think there’s a route back to the NFL for him unless he completely changes his reputation, and that’s not possible.

I think Vrabel might need to go the college route as well; he’s gotta consider Ohio State if/when Day is let go.

I’ll be curious to see how he does with someone not named Brady as his QB

He’s 83-104 with Brady. 28-39 with the Patriots if we’re giving him a pass on the Browns. But no coach is going to be any good without a decent QB though (as Daboll is finding out the hard way this year), so the “how did he do without Brady” is kinda dumb anyway.

I can see him meeting with a prospective recruit: Belichick waxes poetic about the virtues of one platoon football and asks the recruit if he’d be “willing to go both ways.” Bill shares his easy understanding of the zeitgeist by rattling off such happening cultural icons as crooner Pat Boone, fireball Ann Margaret and that hilarious Flip Wilson. Belichick might ask the recruit his thoughts on the dropkick and the hula hoop craze. Yeah, he’ll be totally relatable with his feet up on the desk in his short sleeved cut off hoodie.

Of course, wearing six Super Bowl rings doesn’t hurt his cause much either :)

This hiring signals the end of college football as we know it! College football will rapidly resemble Pro sports. UNC has committed 50 million to BB ... and the expectation is that the Big Donors will be jumping over each other to give big money! Where does this leave Syracuse in terms of this financial Arms Race? We have a great Coach, who understands recruiting, can deal with young players, and can recognize talent. I like our position...but, it is going to take more and more money each year to be great!
This is it. 100%. This hire will be the next big step in the professionalization of college sports.

I doubt BB will ever deal with players grades, or going to class. I doubt he’ll do much recruiting on the road, if any.

Who knows if he’ll be successful, but I doubt he will be running his program in any way similar to what we think of as a college coach.

This is professional football now, it just has an extra requirement that players go to class.

$20M budget for NIL is bananas. I thought that was separate from the school and funded by external sources?

Still if the top echelons of the ACC are starting to spend $20M on NIL, I don’t know if that’s a good thing for this program.

I’m guessing our NIL budget is $2M? Half went to McCord and the other half split amongst the top 10-15 players. Just a guess.

Nice selective sample, what about 2023.

He had ONE BAD YEAR in 20 plus years. Nice selective sample. THE ONLY MAN on earth who would have switched from Bledsoe to Brady in 2001 was Bill Belichick. I wouldn't expect anyone on a Syracuse site to recall how tenuous that was and how ballsy the move was after the Rams reg season game to name Brady the starter.

Belichick is the greatest coach in professional sports history. To win and to keep the team as a team around him and to convince Brady to take less money for all those years was a thing of beauty.

I think people are too near sighted to realize what a genius this man is football wise. To me his only black mark is he was with the NY Jets organization.

The narratives around Brady making Belichick are insane, especially when you consider that Tom was an unknown 2nd year player when he took over, and wasn't close to the elite QB he turned into for the first 3 Super Bowls. Complete revisionist history.

Bill the GM was the downfall of Bill the HC. Got too cute with it.
