Belichick to UNC

He had ONE BAD YEAR in 20 plus years. Nice selective sample. THE ONLY MAN on earth who would have switched from Bledsoe to Brady in 2001 was Bill Belichick. I wouldn't expect anyone on a Syracuse site to recall how tenuous that was and how ballsy the move was after the Rams reg season game to name Brady the starter.

Belichick is the greatest coach in professional sports history. To win and to keep the team as a team around him and to convince Brady to take less money for all those years was a thing of beauty.

I think people are too near sighted to realize what a genius this man is football wise. To me his only black mark is he was with the NY Jets organization.
He is no doubt a very good coach if not the best of all time. Just pointing out counter arguments thats all. You new Englandanders get so worked up over your Boston teams. Lol

I wonder if they'll be changing the lb pressure in the football down there now? Definitely a brilliant coach.

The whole last year in the media was his "fix my reputation" year. And he still had NOTHING. NFL teams do not want him as a GM. They want him as a coach only. And he won't take a job with no control.
He will take a job without control in a year

Nice selective sample, what about 2023.
Look, just say he’s a fraud or something. Don’t couch it in the stupid “analysis” about his record sans Brady.

I don’t think he is a fraud at all, I would say his record at the end was mixed at best. Why that is I’m not exactly sure.

He botched the rebuild post-Brady. It was largely because Mac Jones suuuuucked. There were other issues, but that sunk the team.

They should put Bill’s 10-7 playoff season with Mac in the Hall of Fame alongside his Giants Super Bowl defensive gameplan from 1990. That was a coaching job for the ages with that dope at QB.

No doubt 1990 was a great defensive performance. I mean Jeff Hostelter (SP) from WVU, enough said

The narratives around Brady making Belichick are insane, especially when you consider that Tom was an unknown 2nd year player when he took over, and wasn't close to the elite QB he turned into for the first 3 Super Bowls. Complete revisionist history.

Bill the GM was the downfall of Bill the HC. Got too cute with it.
Regardless of the individual opinions about BB and his coaching chops, having Bill Belichick as your head football coach on the college level, is a Game Changer, especially in the direction that college foortball is moving. More telling than the actual hire is the financial commitment UNC is making to the Head Coach, 50 million, the assistants, rumored to be another 50 million, and the commitment to NIL of 20 million per year! Where does Syracuse stand in this escalation?

Belichek will not have an incompetent fool (like Geoff Collins) running the defense. BB knows defense, and it will be among the best in the ACC. Their defense will be keyed to disrupt the opponent QB's. SU will need a diverse, top-level offense and very unpredictable play calling to beat them.

But it is unlikely UNC will ever have much offensive firepower under BB. Even if someone can find him a top QB and sign him, that college QB will not be around very long. BB's blind spot is QB evaluation and esp WR evaluation for his own roster. So the question is, will he delegate that to someone else? Highly unlikely.

As a side note, the Patriots offensive collapse under BB also coincided with the retirement of their amazing offensive line coach, Dante Scarnecchia. Dante was originally hired by Dick MacPherson, BTW. They have only made the playoffs one time since he left after the 2019 season.

I’ll disagree with your side note somewhat.

Yes, the Pats have never adequately replace Scar. However, in my opinion, the “collapse” was much more about (1) Josh McDaniels leaving, (2) Mac Jones being QB, and (3) Bill letting 2 OL starters go while inadequately replacing them.

The offense on the 2021 team, McDaniels’ last season, was pretty good. The Pats averaged 4.4 yards per carry and Mac was only sacked 28 times. That suggests an OL that was solid. The line was Wynn-Karras-Andrews-Mason-Brown.

But Bill, for reasons known only to him, let Karras walk via free agency and traded Mason. Those were terrible decisions that have led to the OL being atrocious this season.

Scar was an all timer as an OL coach. But even he wouldn’t have gotten much production out of the turnstiles they’ve had play line the last couple seasons.

Meanwhile, the Pats O has been decent since Drake Maye became the starter. Maybe UNC had a pretty good pro development system in place before Bill got the job? ;)

NE has under 320 yds 11 times this year.
the last 5 games they scored 17/19/22/15/24

Maye runs around well though.

I mean, in his last few years in New England, Bill wasn’t particularly good at identifying college players who could be good in the NFL. Now he’s going to have some magic system to develop guys and send them off to the league with guarateed success?
Obviously they can't do anything different/better from a developmental standpoint than the factories can. The only thing I can think of is networking with NFL front offices/coaches to increase his players' draft stock, and his coaching tree is such a joke that's a non-starter too.

A guy like Andy Reid would actually be able to deliver on a promise like that if he ended up coaching in college. Between his coaching tree and his front office tree/connections, he's probably got big time credibility with a quarter to a third of the league. I'm not sure if Belichick has any.

Well one nice thing for Bill is that you can cheat like Michigan did last year and still get to win a title. Plus, no fine or draft picks taken away you just get a few weeks off and the NCAA thinks you're still not running things from your hot tub.

In a game where too many are declared “geniuses” (Chip Kelly? Scott Frost?) Belichick actually is a genius.

He will succeed at NC because he knows more about the game and football management than anyone in history.

He’s a genius who was a sub-.500 coach whenever he didn’t have TB12 playing for him.

83-104.
You are what your record says you are.

So - did he somehow have a TBI whenever Brady wasn’t in the games?

And is he going to be bringing TB12 to UNC with him?

In college, recruiting is key. He has no experience in that regard.
