Ben DeLuca fired from Cornell

Wow, he was out recruiting his weekend and now he is done. Going to be interesting to see who takes over both this season and long term.

I forget the details but wasn't there some sort of scandal that kept them from participating in Fall Ball?
Hazing incident involving alcohol. I have to think it is something more than that, since that all came out over 2 month ago.

Cornell athletics is no less screwed up than SU athletics at the top of the food chain.

Had heard no whispers about this coming..

The Cornell thread on Laxpower (bottom of page 81 and beyond) makes it sound like the hazing incident was the last straw. A lot of people are really P.O.'ed at their AD about this and other things.

Soumds like a Rutgers situation.

It wouldn't surprise me if they come after Gait.Does Gary want to stay on coaching the ladies?

Tillman would be the obvious target, but I guess salary would be an issue. Noel likes to hire assistant coaches so Rewkowski or Rogers could be targets.

I do not think Tillman leaves Maryland. He has built on what his predecessors have done there and is on verge of a title with the Terps (personal opinion). Plus, you are right, they can't match salary. They also can't afford Gary Gait. If Kerwick rallies the team and they have a solid season I would guess they keep him on. If they go outside, my top assistants to target would be Lelan Rogers or Matt Brown (Denver). I would think they are in a position to go after a current head coach, if that is the case I would look at Kevin Cassesse, Shawn Nadelen, and Dan Sheehan.

Most likely none of the names I guess will even get a sniff.

If salary wasn't an issue I think Tillman would be viable. A chance to return to his alam mater & take over a program that has had a lot of recent success but can't get over the top might be pretty attractive. Plus, I'd be a little worried about Maryland leaving the ACC. Again, all moot.

It would seem either Cornell can't afford the rate for existing head coaches or it doesn't appear to be in Noel's game plan. Off the top of my head, I don't think there was a previous collegiate head coach hired among his last 3 lax coaches, or his last 3-4 football coaches, last 2 basketball coaches, last women's hockey...might be wrong.

Given the turmoil it's could be a safe bet that he'll look for someone with a recent connection to the program. I guess I'm just hoping it's Rewkowski.

I wonder if Brown is Denver's HC in waiting?

I'm surprised Sheehan hasn't gotten a D1 job by now.

Cassese could be a good call. Hadn't thought about him.

The only thing that would prevent Rewkowski from being a candidate is if Noel want to move in a different direct and get away from those with a connection to the previous regime.

Sheehan is very selective in throwing his hat in ring. He has turned down multiple requests for interviews. I know he was interested and in the mix at the end for Princeton when they hired bates. Cornell would be the perfect job for him, can realistically keep his family in Syracuse.

Don't know about Browns situation, I would think Tierney would encourage him to take Cornell. I don't think T is leaving any time soon. Too much success lately to walk away.

Cassesse would be a home run. He will be targeted for the next big job that comes available. If I was michigan AD I would can my club coach and get Cassese.

I think I'd be more worried staying in the ACC. 5 other top 10 teams and the ACC tmt. Also, UMd would keep Hopkins on the schedule. That is a pretty tough schedule.
Could wear a team down, and one ACC team might find themselves getting left out come NCAA tmt time. I think it could put a lot of pressure on a coach (and I would guess that deep down, some of the other ACC coaches are sort of glad to see UMd move on).

The Big Ten will be a nice mix with strong teams in Hopkins, PSU, and OSU, with Michigan developing but still weak and Rutgers sort of middling. Sort of on the same level as the Ivy league. It gives Tillman much more freedom on scheduling out-of-conference. Sounds comfortable to me.

I like this interesting quote.

"For reasons which still remain unclear to me ... I will be parting ways with the University and moving on to the next chapter .."
