Best guards available for 2012

We involved with any? Were do you see us standing with Whitehead?

Thanks for the work!

I really liked some of the thinks Walker did. He was so smooth finishing on the move from 10' out and in. He'll need to learn to finish with the left hand in college though.

I'm not concerned about a 4th guard for next season. Depth would be nice but the way we are recruiting if it isn't a guy that the staff thinks will really help us down the road then I'd rather wait until next class. Brandon, Michael and Trevor will make a great back court IMO and if Dion stays its the best in the county.

Not to my knowledge yet as noted in the first paragraph. As far as Whitehead is concerned, when recruiting a player from Lincoln, you can expect things to turn into the following.

Best in all of Onondaga County?

I know what you meant, and with Dion we are certainly in great shape.

With Dion gone, the other 3 could be pressed unless MCW does a lot of work on his handle. Triche can be very good (W Vir) or pedestrian (St Johns). Always better to have a guard or two who has the quickness to beat pressure and at least occasionally get past a defender off the dribble.

Could take a guard this year, and still go after a prime prospect for 2013 to take BT's spot.

Kind of weird, but Triche seems to play a lot better in close games than he does blowouts, while dion has been kind of the opposite, and struggled in some of our closest games. Scoop however has been pretty consistent all year. As far as guards go for next year, I would rather wait and get someone really good in 2013. We did pretty good in 2010 with just 3 guards. I think a lot of people forget this year is not the norm for us as far as depth goes, and I still think dion has a lot to prove before its guaranteed he leaves

Imagined that would be your response, just checking...

Our backcourt will be a 4th year Senior that has started every game of his career, a Soph. McDonald's All American with NBA talent and a redshirt Fresh that GMac called "the greatest shooter he has seen at SU."

I don't understand anyone panicing about our back court for next year. If Dion comes back we are the #1 backcourt in the country next year. If he doesn't, we are still one of the top 10 backcourts in the country. Picking through the remains of guards is not a great recruiting strategy this late in the season. I am sure we will get a top tier guard in 2013 and we have more than enough talent for next season, with or without Dion.

Isn't there a chance Mookie comes back next year as well? I thought I'd heard that. He'd give us a fine fourth guard.

With or without him, I think we're fine with the 3 who will be back. JB keeps talking up how good Triche will be next year, I think MCW is a stud and we've only heard rave reviews about Cooney so far.

What is the record for most starts by a player at SU? Brandon would have to finish near the top after next season barring any unexpected injuries.

most games played is 144 by Stevie Thompson
most games started is 140 by Derrick Coleman
most consecutive games started is 136 by Craig Forth

this will be Triche's 95th consecutive start
he is currently 80-14 as a starter, which is among the highest lifetime winning percentages for a starter in the Boeheim era (Melo, for example, at 30-5 is slightly higher) and the highest for a multi-year starter

so if we make deep runs in this year's and next year's tourney then he has a shot.

I wouldn't sweat the press. As he has done many times in the past JB is using a forward a bit to break the press. This year its CJ. I think he likes the ballhandling mismatch CJ has vs anyone usually guarding him particulalry if he's playing the 4.

It was always fun to watch DC help bring the ball up the floor at times. Nobody wanted to mess with him.

Gotta disagree about concern for a 4th guard. The three we will have back (assuming Dion goes bye-bye) will be just fine, but an injury, foul troubles, academics, etc. make it risky to have only three. I think we could get by w three if one of our forwards could swing to the 2G if necessary, but our combo players are all 1-2s or 3-4s or 4-5s. We do not have any 2-3 combo players on the roster. Of course, having a 4th guard for the sake of having a 4th guard is no good either. A 4th guard would have to be good enough to hold down the fort if necessary. If there are not any available good enough 4 yr guards left, maybe a JUCO might work as it only ties up a scholie for two years. Seems like we did pretty well with our last JUCO (KO).

Oh, by the I have been hearing some good things about this Lin kid. Do you suppose he might still be available ???

Having only 3 guards going into a season is not acceptable for an elite program. If we have guard injuries (like UNC) we would be down to 2 or 1 guards. How about 1 injury and foul trouble? How about MCW leaving after 3 yrs? Did Andy blow out a knee? I am sure that JB is not as complacent about this as you are. And this assumes that Cooney is everything you hope for.

Good point on using the forwards against full court pressure -- Kris is good as well. Next year, we could use Grant and CJ if Grant is ready to contribute.

But putting pressure on the guards is more than just making it a challenge to get over mid-court. Marquette pressures the guards in the half court as well. G-town does that when it is playing M2M. Jonny Flynn or Dion or Scoop can beat that sort of pressure. If you have Wes & Andy to start the offense, you don't need a quick PG. But with the make-up of our team next year, a guard who can beat someone with the dribble would be a nice add (as well as insurance).

I made this comment assuming that Mookie would be back as the 4th guard for next season. I agree we need a 4th guard in case an emergency situation arises. If Mookie comes back next year then there are no worries. It is likely that Dion will jump to the NBA, but not guaranteed. No remaining top tier recruit is going to come here with the possibility of sitting behind MCW, Dion and Triche for a full season. The fact that the staff has not made recruiting another guard for 2012 a top priority, tells me all I need to know about Trevor Cooney. Cooney will be good and a nice change of pace as the 3rd or 4th guard next season beacuse his skill set is different from the other guards on our roster. If this was a serious concern I am sure that JB would have addressed it already. Maybe we go after a Juco player late if Dion declares, kind of like we did with Kong after it was obvious that Donte was leaving. I don't think we tie up a scholly for 4 years on a mediocre guard that is likely to be recruited over in 2013.

If Waiters leaves after this season, I have to believe that JB dips into the late commit/JC ranks and finds a guard that can act as our fourth guard. The risk of poor performance is from our current returning guards is low, as Triche is a very good guard at either point or shooting role, Carter-Williams has terrific talent and potential, while Cooney seems to be a very good third guard as shooting specialist. (I am very high on the hints of talent I have seen from Cooney)

However, if we do have a game where two of our guards are injured or in foul trouble, we have no forwards who can play the guard position, even in a pinch. Fair and Southerland are the closest. I think both would be adequate keeping their hands up in the passing lanes, but neither would stop an opposing guard from driving into the lane at will. In years past, we often seemed to have a 2-3 type player who could swing forward or guard. Perhaps because of our glut of recruiting success, we have been getting guys like Fair and Southerland, who are big enough to swing 3-4, but would have trouble on top of the zone. For our defense, having a guy who is too big and slow to play up top is way worse than a guy who is too small playing down low. We don't expect to get any defensive rebounds any way :) We do plan to stop wide open threes, easy penetration, and dunks as often as we can.

A fourth guard in the Ongenaet mold of a solid player who can contribute when called upon would be a solid pickup this offseason, given the assumption that Waiters leaves after the season.

Or Brandon Reese will be a great fourth guard if we need one!

I think we'll be alright with Brandon/MCW/Trevor. Mookie can be the emergency 4th guy, he knows the program and his scholarship will be freed up after next year anyway.
