Big 10 says a title this year is meritless

Don’t know if legit

Who says peer pressure doesn’t work? ;)

B1G wanted to go steak the quad, but nobody in the P5 (besides the Pac12 - aka nobody) came with them. :p

Warren can’t keep his job and the Big Ten reverse course.
They aren’t going to play in the fall and the conference has lost some of its power.

TSHTF. The big money interests that have sunk huge amounts of money into their programs will mutine if the season is canceled and their brands take a big hit.

If the B1G performs an about face and decides to play, is the championship still "meritless"? ;)

Not sure the B1G can turn this around. Doing so is like an admission they don't care about the players and their safety.

Anyway, I hope they change their decision based on facts, assuming the facts support a change. If the facts do not support changing their position, I hope they do not decide to play.

While I believe the ACC has a decent plan and they are implementing it, as well as being willing to adjust it accordingly based on the facts, if the B1G is not dedicated to doing similarly, then the teams are better off not playing.

Would be really funny (in a not funny at all kind of way) if the BiG said " it we'll play again", and then within a few days ACC, SEC, B12 all said ok we're gonna not play this year.

Not sure if this has been posted, but there are some interesting conversations from cardiologists on Twitter refuting one of the reaearch papers the BIG used.

Sir Yacht has spoken! Is he a cousin of the Maryland Mole or Dude from WV?

Big 10 definitely isn't playing. It is illogical that pressure from players would force them to shun their medical decision.

Here's the latest on what Tom Mars is doing. Love that name by the way, reminds me of Tom Ace from Ace Ventura.

It sounds like the B1G didn't really get a thorough report anyway, which is what's keeping them silent in the face of uproar.

I think the leagues need to decide whether they are doing this because the player risks their own health or because they risk the health of others. And they're better off sticking to the latter. How, in a CTE world, do you tell a kid he can't play because he might be risking some damage to organs from a brand new disease, when the sport involves them smashing their heads against each other?

The B10 cannot really turn back. Too late. The whole thing is intriguing though. Bilas is right. Give us the documentation. The B10 gave no real defense of the decision. Based on what medical evidence and scientific research? What scientific data and facts? Want to share that with us mere mortals who might benefit? Apparantly not.

The South is the problem. People in the South are not following protocols...and by all evidence we see..have no intention of doing so

This is still a southern centric conference with 3 northern outposts. I guess 4 if you count ND in 2020. But that bodes poorly for completion of season

This proves a couple of things:

  • The B1G believes themselves to be self-important, and they were looking to set the trend for the rest of college football by making a grand spectacle of cancelling the season, expecting the other P5 to follow suit
  • They were caught off guard last week when the ACC, SEC, and Big-12 didn't fall in line
  • Their "vote" wasn't really a vote
  • Money drives the bus
  • Ohio State runs that conference

I played devil's advocate in another thread with that same argument. If you didn't care about their safety before, don't try to make choices for them now because of their safety.

I didn't look this up in detail, but you may have. When the two leagues cancelled either on the same day or consecutive days, I read the B1G shared nothing, but the Pac-12 was very transparent with everyone about evidence they used. And it hasn't seemed to cause of any similar issues in that conference. Is that correct?

Good post and you are right on every key point. The rich, arrogant B10 thought as soon as they canceled football..well, the other impovervished sharecroppers...the other P5's...would quickly fall in line. I guess we were supposed yo gollow the B10 into the burning building. They forgot about the SEC. Indeed more powerful and influential and superior FB to the B10. They refused to fold their cards. The B10 made a classic strategic mistake. Make sure you know what your competition will do before you make your play!! They blew it big time.

I would love to see them do a 180. Go from the phony, "we are shutting it down because our #1 priority is not about money, but strictly the student-athlete" to "all is well...sure, we can play. For the student-athletes"

not sure who this snook guy is or if this is true but pretty interesting stuff.

It is convenient that tOSU was mentioned as playing five other teams. As there are seven in the B1G East, who is left out?*

My guess is Rutgers, it would allow Shady another year to recruit before people can see his vision play out on the gridiron.

*I know each team can drop one division for and play the remaining five, but, hey, it's all imaginary at the moment, we may as well have some fun. Especially at Rutgers' expense.

The vote by the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C) was overwhelmingly in support of postponing fall sports and will not be revisited.

Agreed. B1G misread the room badly. There were zero reasons to make that decision on 8/11.
