The "Wich Way to the NIT" story earlier in this thread brought back memories. My roommate and I put the headline from the newspaper up in our window in Watson Hall. Somewhere, I still have the photo I took of our window. In those days, going to a tournament was not a given for SU, to say the least. Also, the NIT was a much bigger deal at that time than it is now.

Symphony Steve is a great longtime poster. We may have met once long ago at a board get together somewhere.

From the content of his posts and name, it seems possible that ExCuse52 might actually be Bill Smith. If so, that might explain his response.

We all change over the years. That Bill Smith behaved in a way that I didn't like back in 1970 doesn't mean he lived his life like that.

I mean, our, what's it called, cerebral cortex, isn't fully mature until our late 20's. If it had been, I never would have drunk Maximus.

Sounds like he had an enlarged medulla oblongata. Yes, I learned that from The Waterboy.

Longtime lurker - rarely post. I played on that freshman team. Actually was the non scholarship starter for 1/2 of the year before bad grades got in the way. My job was to guard the other team's best player ( didn't matter if I fouled out) and pass the ball to Bill

Bill Smith was a great player as was Bobby McDaniel. A definite pro if he had stayed in school.

Our only loss was to Broome Tech at their place. We got to the school around 4:00 for a 7:00 game and the place was packed and going crazy. They has a superstar guard named Frank Streety. He was an unbelievable player. I had 3 fouls in about 5 minutes trying to guard him.

I still have a scar under my lip where Bill caught me with an elbow in practice. Danforth ( the freshman coach then) looked at it said see the trainer and be at practice tomorrow.

Don't want to be that guy, but I was on the Hill the same time as Smith. I remember him loudly berating the woman who was in charge of the cafeteria. He just wasn't a nice person.

I grant you that a snapshot of a person isn't the whole person, but, as a short person, I always had a thing about tall people using their sheer physical presence to intimidate others. I saw Smith do that on more than one occasion, at least once on his then girlfriend, who was very petite.

Evidently, you did want to be that guy.
