Blocking by the numbers

I don’t put as stock in these "numbers" as you do.

And last year in 6 games IIloa had a failing grade as a pass blocker and was below average in run blocking. So what have you seen that says start him?

That’s fair but the NFL puts some stock in them since they all subscribe. Maybe you’re an NFL scout?
No, but maybe they do because they can't watch every team, every game. I can and do watch every Syracuse game, and re-watch every play.

There was only 3 games on last night. It’s not hard for them to have watched last nights game

Well they watch every game and breakdown every player for every play. I know the game but trust their analysis far more than my own eyes.

Run blocking
Berg low end of good
Ellis, Vett and Davis average towards low end of average
Bleich very low end of average near below average

Pass blocking
Bleich excellent
Berg very good
Ellis low end of good
Davis and Vett average
Thank you

PFF also put out a story on how they dont really have film to review most of the college plays and just go by TV film which is often horrible to review.. the question is which College teams use the service and then supply good film for review..

As of a couple years ago PFF was used by all 32 NFL teams, many CFL teams and 80+ of 131 FBS teams including over 75% of P5 schools.

In the ACC for the season

Vett graded 10th at center
Bleich graded 20th at guard
Ellis graded 27th at guard
Berg graded 5th at tackle
Davis graded 19th at tackle
Roughly this…

Center - 10th of 14
Guards - 20th of 28, 27th of 28
Tackles - 5th of 28, 19th of 28

Only one top-half positional player in the ACC. The rest lower third/quarter.

Interior is atrocious.

With only the few Friday night games PFF already updated their initial grades after a play by play review.

What this tells me is that Schmidt needs to do better.

My fear is the issue is that Anae and Schmidt need to get along better.

Anae is an OL guy. No excuse for what we have seen so far. The only hope is that they spent so much time on pass blocking that the kids forgot about run blocking. But we have 3 weeks to fix that.

They work with all 22, ESPN and others for film.

Last year our entire focus was run blocking this years O is more complex.

I know but all-22 is just nfl, espn doesnt always have all-22 cameras and the schools do..

All 22 isn’t just nfl, it’s used through ESPN products too for ncaa. I wouldn’t doubt they get film from many of the schools too that they work with. Bottom line, which nobody can deny regardless of their own personal opinions, is that if all 32 nfl teams as well as 80+ fbs teams including more than 75% of P5 schools, are using the service it must be first rate and completely legit. They aren’t just guessing in their analysis.

maybe.. I just go be reading what they have pt out in print that they do guess. they didnt have good film on many games in college.. But that was 4-5 yrs ago.. maybe its gotten way better. If teams like the service maybe they are providing film.. Because to do it right you need the all-22 from the sides and the ends and ESPN does not do that for every game they do.

From the pff website.

“Each grade is reviewed at least once, and usually multiple times, using every camera angle available, including All-22 coaches’ tape.”

I also saw that all 22 also uses the pff products.

Weren’t last year’s pff grades were roughly the same? If true then this is more about the scheme.

You asked that question and I gave you the numbers

Yes, thank you, I looked at them… and there is some variance but nothing that says last year was notably better or worse. This leads me to think this is mostly the scheme… and Tucker playing at 70%.

Based on this and our scheme, maybe we should switch Davis and Bleich? We mostly run inside, anyway.

I’m one that doesn’t believe Tucker is that “hurt”. The guys who are hurt are on the sidelines in street clothes. Many football players go on the field and play with bumps and bruises and soreness and are dinged up. If he was that hurting he would t be used as much as he is. He also had a few runs, especially late, where he showed a lot of burst and wiggle. He also doesn’t look any different going out for all those passes. I think people after seeing their “stars” not perform as well as expected, Tucker and Shrader, default to “he must be hurt”. Is he dinged up? Maybe. Does he have some soreness? Maybe. But he’s not hurt to the point that he can’t perform well. Not when we are seeing him sent into a wall of defenders 20 times

Then you agree with us. It is egregious coaching malfeasance to continually run Tucker into a wall of defenders with a poor run OL. Put your best players in the best situation to succeed. Dr. Bob needs to be better.
