Boeheim's Army / TBT 2025

It’s interesting where was all this vitriol when JAB took off off numerous summers to Coach in the Olympic’s? If Cuse Basketball doesn’t show considerable improvement next season then it makes sense. Some here don’t seem to like Red and didn’t from his hire. I’m not saying that he and his staff don’t deserve criticism when they under perform. Let’s give this staff some space to do their coaching thing.
From 2008 to 2016 we went to 2 final fours, won the BE regular season title twice, and won at least 25 games 6 times. The program is not in the same spot it was then. It was only post 2016 that people started to complain because that is when recruiting started to deteriorate.

A well thought out point of view, Ty!

You're comparing TBT, a glorified alumni pick-up tournament, to the Olympics?
Red flag, you missed the point of my post, try again. I wasn’t comparing the 2 , it’s time away from player evaluation which has been the overwhelming complaint.

Well I don’t mind this at all.
Maybe it is because I am really hyped to go to these games.
I already bought my tickets!
The regular basketball season was such a downer that I am hoping to just have some basketball fun.
And frankly if this season rises or falls on whether Griffin coaches TBT then we are in even worse shape than I fear.

To me, it’s a perception issue, plain and simple.

Maybe the coaches should focus on building team chemistry and strength and conditioning. I guess they don't think those things are lacking or important.
I know there are limits to what the coaches can do during the off season and there are ways around the limits too.

Boeheim's Army seems to have a nice frontcourt.
Any chance they intend to fill the most important slot by getting a good point guard?
Or will Allen Griffin have to serve as player/coach?

For an event during the summer who so many say they don’t care about - from the number of posts here, I think they are exaggerating a bit. I wonder if we knew in other seasons when and where assistants took vacations - not during the season for sure. I have no idea what or where every assistant was doing every week during the off season in the past. Was it better to head to the beach, the Adirondacks, vacation overseas unpublicized for 2 weeks while alternating with the other assistants in the short off season or is it worse to spend that vacation coaching other teams, working on your coaching technique, working at other coach’s basketball camps, attending coaching clinics , holding your own youth clinic etc? I imagine the assistants do plenty each summer.

Jamie also might be the best athlete of the three kids. In addition to winning a state championship in basketball, she was also an outstanding competitive swimmer.
wasn't she real good in softball too?

I think the point of the response is that the Olympics are significantly more important, and the prominence of a coach on staff there benefits SU far more than a coach working TBT.

One could argue that it's a wash, balance-wise, because it's not a head coach 'wasting' time at TBT.

One could argue that we don't do such a hot job at player evaluations anyway, so maybe this is addition by subtraction. I won't make that argument, but it's there for anyone in a more snarky mood...

Carlos!

I think it’s great Griffin is coaching TBT. He’ll get some head coaching experience with a bunch of motivated pros and former college kids.

Most of the players haven’t made enough where a share of the $1 million prize is chump change.

I think Griffin comes out of this a better coach, and that only helps Syracuse going forward. Red can use another assistant with a touch of head coaching experience.

Having all the former players play is pure nostalgia, rooting for Griffin to coach well is pure rooting for our current team, which us where my juices flow.

It will be good to have our former players around the current players. Also, perhaps Griff runs some offensive and defensive sets that they want our current players to run. Boeheims Army roster is full of professionals that should be able to learn and execute sets with efficiency. This may be something that can help the staff with film. Some of the positives I can think of from the situation.

That’s a very positive way to look at it. Could it help him, possibly, but the optics of this isn’t great IMO. Truth be told I’m not sure it matters one way or another.

Your post brought up another thought. The current environment in college basketball is a lot like the TBT tournament when it comes to constructing and organizing teams.

The Boeheim’s Army players haven’t played together, and don’t have very long to gel and come together as a team. With 10 players turning over every season, that sounds an awful lot like every college team.

Another way Griffin can learn something about coaching will be watching and assisting the players in how they come together.

As I said in my last post, I’m much more interested now that Griffin is the coach.

We've had coaches in the past go over to Europe during the summer to coach a bunch of players not even from Syracuse under the guise of Big East All Stars or East Coast All Stars or something like that.

Not sure why Griff is getting all the Gruff. He will be directing current and former players and everyone will be learning from it. Glad that you and others can see this.

The difference is that after the worst performance in 60 years all of the coaches should be working as hard as they can to save their jobs. Winners get showers and losers don't.
