Boeheim's Army / TBT 2025

When you are comjng off one of the worst seasons in decades,
and theoretically coaching for your job and career in this absolutely make or break season -

the LAST THING ANY COACH should be doing -
is, anything that isn’t their day job.

Period. Full stop.

It’s a turrible, tone deaf, clownshow look.

He’s going to watch Peach Jam and Under Armor games from his phone? I'd rather have all our assistants out on the road doing their scouting in-person but that's just me. The more SYR guys out there seen by recruits the better. I know some D1 assistants have served as coaches before in the TBT but I don’t know if they are from a P5 conference.

I suppose they think it will be good publicity to have Griff out there on ESPN for a week or two.

I would have preferred Devo as coach. No doubt he would be able to motivate and light a fire under everyone's rear end

Yeah, I called for Devo as the player-coach, too. He knows what this tournament requires, and he is one tough SOB. Love him.

Have the rules changed? There used to be a limit as to how many coaches could be on the road at a time. It was 3 years ago. What is it now? 3? 4? Unlimited? If there is a limit maybe Kline is replacing Griff which I would be OK with.
Stop trying to justify.

If Kline is going to be replacing Griffin, then why is Griffin even employed as an assistant?

I'll say it again. We've been doing a really good job still drawing top recruits under Autry.

Maybe they feel like Griffin being on TV for a week or two on ESPN, getting all that Syracuse love, could benefit us on the recruiting trail.

It's like when Mike Hopkins got to be an assistant on those Olympics and National teams with JB. It was publicity. It helped him recruit better: "I got to coach LeBron last summer, and he told me this..."

Red, Straughn, Engelstad, Kline.
Second session summer school goes Monday, Jun. 30 - Friday, Aug. 8.

TBT starts July 19-23, but practices probably start a week before.

Quarterfinals July 28, Semifinals July 31, Finals August 3.

Given we have a ton of new players, and the other four would be on the road during the evaluation period, might it make sense for the assistants not on the road to... hang with me here... help the current team get better? Or, at minimum, be on campus to assist with anything they might need?

Regardless of if they can recruit or not, seems like a massive misappropriation of resources, that I've been told are already limited compared to other high D1 programs that have more coaches.

I think we will hear some explaining about it tomorrow, but wished they did it today when it was announced.

TBT is NOT the Olympics. Full stop.

I don't think recruits care squat about TBT. Isn't the NBA summer league during this time? I'd think they are more interested in that.

Yeah, but it's the only thing on TV for a certain period during the summer. We will be hosting a regional. JB will be there to be on TV. Buddy will play. A handful of recent grads, still young enough to compete, have committed to the team. This could be some truly great PR.

I mean, Melo, JB and Kiyan are going to be doing a LOT of media in Syracuse in the next year or two. They already had that AT&T commercial with the Mini Melo statute that went national.

For a full-time employee who has been performing below par for a long period of time, to take a second job and distract them from their main job is... certainly a choice. And not a nothing burger, at least perceptually. And perception is reality.
No reality is reality.

If the people who need to sign off on it did, that’s it.

People who are overreacting to this are just looking for a reason to be outraged.

Going to be outside of the grain on this…but is this potentially a little feigned outrage?

I don’t see this has a huge problem for a few reasons.

For one recruiting hs kids is less important than it’s ever been…not that it’s irrelevant but I don’t see how missing two weeks of aau evaluations is going to make or break anything for us on the recruiting front…Griff is certainly not our top evaluator to begin with.

Kline, Autry and Dan E and possibly even Straughn are in front of Griff as far as evaluating talent goes so it doesn’t seem like a huge loss.

And on the flip side I could see how this could be beneficial for Griff, to sharpen his coaching chops with legitimate professionals talent and be forced to sink or swim.

At the very least he becomes more comfortable with Xs and Os and game planing. I think Griff could use this to be honest for fine tuning and progressing as a coach.

I get the flip side of the perception of where the program is at right now, but idk seems like potentially an overreaction.
Plus, we know there is some overlap between the current guys practicing against the TBT guys. Not sure what the rules are during the summer, but wouldn't the current guys benefit by having Griff, JAB and Buddy coaching them up vs, say a Ryan Blackwell.

Come on. There is an awful lot to complain about, but there is some upside to this.

Were you so mad when Mike Hopkins was coaching the Olympics?

ESPN, right?

ESPN, right?
The summer league ends on July 20 so there will be a window when this will be the only basketball going so you may definitely be on to something,
