Class of 2022 C Donovan Clingan (CT) Offered

This place is starting to get as bad as the Boneyard. I'm starting to hope neither us or them get either Filipowski or Clingan.
Why? What we are seeing is quintessential fandom. Since it appears Clingan is trending UConn, the obvious reaction is to start downplaying his importance and finding reasons to doubt him. If the situation was reversed, the Boners, or any other fanbase, would react the same way. Rinse and repeat.

Wrong, every single D1 coach has statedd how well he runs the floor, his great footwork and his athleticism for his size. Try again my man
Great athleticism for a kid who’s 7’1” 280 at 16, sure. But he doesn’t move as well as even guys like Sidibe or Jesse Edwards, that’s all I’m saying.

also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but if you watch how Hurley plays defense it’ll really expose Don.

How? The hedge over the top of a screen? Something an athletic guard that can play defense would cut down on? He changes EVERY SINGLE game plan of EVERY SINGLE team that plays against him because he is such a defensive menace. I get it, everyone is questioning Clingans abilities now because he hasn't immediately committed after only 3 official visits(eyeroll) but I don't think Filipowski is coming here and the blue bloods are chasing him hard. And the blue bloods are now interested in Donovan. If blue bloods want him, he MUST be doing something right. Not looking good for us. Or Uconn for that matter(thankfully).

You didn’t watch UConn at all this year did you? Whaley is elite at the 5 on the hard hedge, And Sanogo struggled with it big time. So much so that Hurley had to bench Sanogo even though he would have big games offensively because defensively he was a problem if the opposing 5 was mobile. And Sanogo is more athletic than DC

He changes every single game plan because he’s playing in a CT public league where no one is over 6’4”. Against quality bigs on the circuit he’s been super inconsistent, there is no debating that. He’s a “menace” defensively because he can sit under the basket. When he plays high level D1 and the opposing center is 6’9 225 and can play on the perimeter, DC will hardly be a defensive menace in that situation. To think Clingan would step on campus and automatically all opposing defenses would be terrified at the collegiate level is just not true. He doesn’t have much of a mid range game right now either.

I was never a huge fan of Clingan and nothing I’m saying is breaking news or insulting to him. Would I take him? Absolutely. But I’d rather have Flip... and you can read back in this thread I never thought DC would come here, ever - so my opinion has nothing to do with being “jaded”, since I think it’s been obvious for a long time he wouldn’t be Cuse ( which is fine, can’t get every kid!)

Clingan moves better than both lol.

I don't think we will get him but I wish the kid well wherever he goes. That being said, I believe he would have excelled with us, sitting under the basket in our zone defense. He is not going to do well playing man to man defense and going out to the perimeter on bigs, and even worse, switching off on screens isolating him with small forwards and guards. He is slow footed and has a game/body type/movement similar to Fab Melo who after his freshman year made a huge leap in our system. It's going to take Donovan a while to get acclimated to a certain level of competition as he does not have the experience of elite prep school competition. We won't enviously watch him play for UConn or Michigan.

I don't agree. Donovan was inconsistent in 1 game on the circuit. Was fairly dominant against Team Rio and Team Takeover. The one game he was inconsistent against a big was against Iwuchukwa, who only scored 4 points while Clingan was in the game. Also got blocked by Clingan. Watched that game myself. Seems to be a pretty good defender if you ask me. But I guess it is what t is. Flip would be a great get. But why is there not 1 thing wrong with his game, but so many things wrong with Clingans? I guess the coaching staff just likes his size...

Are you a friend of the Clingans? A family member? Are you a Cuse fan? Not trying to be disrespectful just trying to see where you are coming from. Clingan seems to be the only reason you comment on this site and you take any criticism of him very personally. To be clear I think he’s a great prospect and hope he comes here, but I’m curious as to your agenda. Thx

I’ve been burnt enough to know that nothing is ever done until the player signs. That being said, I do think that it is very likely that Clingan is UConn bound by the end of next week. Here’s why:

- Michigan was seen as the biggest competition because they were his childhood team and their recent success with similar players. After that visit came and went it became pretty clear they weren’t the leader.

- Michigan fans seem to think they’re out. I honestly think Juwan Howard botched this one with his comments about not knowing anything about him until recently. I’m probably reaching a bit there though.

- Clingan is still scheduled to go on his official visit this weekend after going on an unofficial a few weeks back. I’ve heard of kids going on an official as a courtesy but not after they were just on an unofficial.

- Alex Karaban will be coming for a last second unofficial during Clingan’s visit. He was just here and is seen a pretty strong lean. I bet there is a commitment from him in the next week as well.

- Clingan wants to be done with the process soon and that doesn’t leave time for other players to get involved. Relationships with coaching staffs seem to be very important to him.

- He’s very connected to home. To be honest, with his background story, the local team should never lose.

Just some thoughts from a UConn fan. Feel free to pile on if I’m wrong.

Oh and as a “dog” I can smell other dogs and I suspect there are at least 2 additional UConn (or non-Syracuse) fans hiding in this thread and each has different tactic. What gives?

I like Clingan- I do think that it will be an adjustment for him system wise at UConn. Maybe even so much it takes him more than a year to be a factor.

I think a couple of things will dictate that including how well he can run the pick and roll, whether his shot is pure at the next level and bow well he can defend.. as already debated at length.

Hurley has to hope that he gets what he needs to overcome losing Bouknight. Last year they were surprisingly adequate albeit not great in the games without him. That said its different when he isn't just coming back from injury.

I agree, but I think UConn has to make the adjustment. My best bet is that Hurley tweaks the defense based on who is playing. Hard hedge when Whaley, Akok, or Johnson are playing and ease up on that when Clingan and Sanogo are in. You’re not going to lose that much without the hedging and it certainly will be made up for by what both can provide offensively.

Hurley is a spazz, but I've always seen him as a very good recruiter. I'm sure he has plans for what role Clingan will play in that offense/defense, just like everybody else who was recruiting him. The key of course is whether Hurley screws things up with his coaching skills...or lack thereof. Honestly haven't been too impressed with him on an in-game basis.
Just not sure why everyone is shocked at this apparent turn to UConn, its been predicted for months. DC seems like a nice enough kid and you gotta love the hometown connection with staying home for his Mom, etc. That's not gonna hurt him on the NIL front either. Wish him well & more power to him.

He wouldn’t have as much competition at the cuse in my opinion but I’m thinking Michigan based on what I’ve read.

As I've stated in earlier posts,, I live about a half hour from him and he is very popular here. I am not family or friend although I know people that are acquaintances of his which really means nothing. I comment on Clingan because he is loved here in CT and I would like to see him here at Cuse. I've seen him play...alot. I have even watched his AAU livestream games because during Covid lockdown, he still played AAU and it wasn't like I was going anywhere. He HAS played against many Nike and Under Armor teams and done extremely well. Even earning an MVP or something like that in the tournament they won in which his team beat Team Rio AND Team Takeover (circuit teams) with only one ranked/starred player being Clingan. His team also lost by 1 to We All Can Go(nike team) in which they had multiple 3 and 4 star players and a couple 5 star players. Again,, all his team had was a 4 star player, Clingan. He also played well in that game. But everyone has their opinion I guess. I am glad that he has options and there are coaches out there that can see his talent. My agenda...to support and defend a hometown player from CT that I'd like to see play at Cuse.
