Class of 2020 C Eddie Lampkin (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/2/24)

No issues with this.
But I see some promise in how these guys seem to have bonded over the summer. Lampkin was certainly a part of this and I think he will be one of the guys needed to lead the way.

Pumped for him and the team and the hope to get us back to the postseason.

One thing I really like is that he seems to have dropped 20-30 pounds in anticipation of this upcoming season. I think he knows that this is "his shot", and he seems to be pretty serious in his preparation. I think that bodes well for a good attitude. So does his podcast with the freshman sharpshooter who is likely to be about the 9th man. They clearly are having fun together.

What red flags are there with Lampkin?

He’s different being a big social media presence and then running his own business while being a student athlete ( being a student and running a business is hardly unusual having done it myself with family business while on the hill). He also had a high price tag to come here ( reminding all he is a Texas kid who was figuring to stay closer to home so that’s not all that crazy) and had some disagreements with Dixon at TCU.

So far since being here he’s worked hard and shedded weight, engaged with the community and clearly has connected well with his teammates if you follow all the social media stuff, and seems to be trying to plant roots with a business. He’s also had great things to say about the SU community.

Eddie is a force of personality - and in an environment with veterans focused on one goal can be a great positive influence & energy. Place him on last year's team, and I don't think it ends well.

Agree that he seems to know this is his last shot, and is making the most of it so far. Hope it translates on the court.

Quick side note. If you follow Eddie, he does post a lot. But what I did catch is that '44' is a reference to a Houston public bus line that presumably is vital for the neighborhood he grew up in.

If that adds any context to the DC/Eddie convo.

I'm TBD on him...a few Red Flags
From my standpoint, and I wouldn't call it a red flag per se, is that I only watched him play once. That was in the PAC12 Championship game last year. Colorado vs Oregon. The Ducks' big man absolutely ate him alive. I came away from that game wishing we had that UO guy.

I know that a single game is too small a sample size, but I'll keep my enthusiasm in check until I see him play a few games for us this year.

I guess he played really well in the NCAA tournament.

You're probably right. Like I said, I only watched him once.

He played very well in the tourney for sure. He looked more like his TCU days just with higher usage and being more aggressive on offense. He was still only a a guy who averaged 7.4 attempts per game so still more of a piece than a primary option.

He’s never been a strong defender per se but has been a plus defender when you get into the metrics especially at TCU. It’s good we have a defensive minded big backing him up ( and who is hopefully healthy and in good enough shape to do so this year) and that’s going to be clear to see even if he does defend more effectively here akin to being at TCU. Given he dealt with a back injury for a good portion of the season last year didn’t help his case either so it will be interesting to see how he looks being healthy again and no longer playing at elevation.

The condensed game against Florida in the NCAA tournament was like a Lampkin highlight reel.

He abused their 240lb center physically and in the stat sheet in that game.

Watching it definitely increased my enthusiasm for Lampkin transferring to Syracuse.

I think he's more fit now, too. I heard something from one of the announcers about Lampkin having had some recent back trouble. You can see his right leg stiffens up a bit in the 2nd half when he's playing defense. Maybe a bit of sciatica.
