Class of 2023 C Owen Freeman (IL) Portal from Creighton

Post from the Auburn hoops board…. First one I’ve seen with them claiming any rumors other than him visiting.

I’m sure this staff is on the ball. Lots of time and lots of options for how you build the roster too.
Just wild, not knowing the money offer differences. AO did some miracle work with those Siena centers. There’s not a lot of them, but I guess I thought getting a bully ball offensive type center would’ve been a bit easier than it appears to be right now.

When you have a 9 man roster and cash to spend you have the advantage of focusing and having a flurry of activity to finish out. I would not want to be sitting like some schools with only - few guys locked down right now.

Freeman’s history makes it tough. Midwest kid, chased the money one time and things went poorly. Now chasing the money one last time and have to look at a lot of things. Maybe being the man at the 5 is less attractive than being paid a little more to play in the south with less exposure and not being counted on so heavily. Maybe he wants to go full dry rub and shoot 3s more. Who knows. Anyways this is the game unfortunately. We just haven’t had the drama over a single addition yet - a number of other schools have. Especially at the C position. Even Mr big shot BH settled for a mediocre at best big from NW that can’t hack it against good competition vs battling it out over the better options still in play.

Just throwing this out there and this is not based on any info I’ve been able to gather.

Could it be possible if we don’t land freeman, we then turn to a moneyball strategy for center. What I mean is we sign another rim protector maybe a Jerald colonel or a cheaper option and go all in on athletic defensive centers.

Then with the left over money we would’ve spend on freeman, we instead sign an offensive first guard. I don’t know about you guys but I wouldn’t absolutely hate that strategy.

If Wilkins is still in play as someone has hinted then that’s how you shift your strategy. That said if we have good money on the table to use you also are calling agents and looking at kids not yet in the portal or over seas. The whole game is you have to work endlessly and never stop pursuing finding the talent you need. It’s a young man’s game in terms of having a deep coaching staff full of new ideas, connections and ambition. You don’t spend the money on such a staff if you don’t expect them to be able to problem solve and move quickly building a team.

Out of the gate it’s way more effective than a GM.. which really comes more into play in year 2.

I mean it’s not ideal, but you got to trust AO to develop and maximize any offensive ability in these defensive athletic centers. Does it lower the ceiling of next year team, probably. I just can’t get over that for like 30 years the least of Syracuse problems was having a 5 with bulk with some offensive moves atleast and can get back on defense. I know we had Jesse Edwards (not really a bulky dude), but the only bulky center we’ve had since Dajuan Coleman was Eddie who had a below average team around him. AO got to build that credibility back for Syracuse in the center market.

Georgetown center that hit the portal looks decent too. There's definitely other options if this doesn't work out. Especially if we land Wilkins, that could change our approach a little bit I suppose?
If they land Wilkins the center position might be a guy off the street. He will not be cheap.

He can be an effective highly paid 9/7/1 guy who is everything we need because of the presence he provides and allows Gerry and the staff to run the system they want and for 1 year as he’s building something special long term it’s ok you spend the money on him for that. You’ve got a blue collar guy off the bench and a major high upside prospect , both of which can help and both of which can be more effective in smaller doses with OF your starter.

As one of three centers, Freeman is worth the risk. I do like both the other guys, and hope they get to play.

But if Freeman is the big signing at Center, we need to kill it with a stud PG who can do it all, and another forward who can defend and hit a 3.

Are they even connected with Wilkins anymore?

Apparently we are… also it seems that they tried extremely hard to avoid anything coming out on the Freeman visit so I suspect we aren’t going to get much aside from very tiny hints at this juncture be it on AW, Freeman or anyone else who visits or is actively in contact with the staff as a realistic option.

I wouldn’t hate it but we would need to land a major impact player at guard. Right now I don’t see the offense firepower needed to be a tournament team.

Mehhhhhhhhh.

Bonke is looking at major money from blue bloods. Fielder has a perfect fit at Alabama.

Mingo's a PG and we have a connection, right?
So he would seem to be the one from that list who might still be in play.
