Class of 2023 C Owen Freeman (IL) Portal from Creighton

So watched a bunch of different clips and game segments. What I take for him defensively is you can’t leave him on an island. He does better if ball pressure and perimeter defense stays true and he’s not constantly having to guard without weak side help or some pressure being put on the ballhandler. I think it’s fair to say that won’t be an issue this year with this team.

He fights hard on the block, is not always perfectly in position and some of his challenges at the rim are awkward. He had a nose for rebounds and finishing downlow and an array of moves that working with AO could help him polish. He fits what you want in a post presence to take advantage of a favorable matchup or to simply play inside out with. I’ve seen no tape or segments of these games where he is unplayable. Nothing resembling dry rubs post D.
You had me at nose for rebounds. My wish.

Yeah, I kind of agree but it's probably more nuanced than that. Not sure why a couple guys here repeatedly say we shouldn't want him but not offer any insight why. If they're looking to avoid crapping on the guy, then maybe stop posting 50 times in a thread that there are issues but offer nothing.

When I did some exploring, there was something on a Creighton board that I found about him and another player (i don't remember who) who had potential issues - so maybe that led to some locker room drama? I have zero idea if that's true but the only thing I could find. There was also some potential bad blood amongst teammates because he came in and got a huge bag (much more than other guys) yet didn't play and contribute like most expected. Again, not sure if that's reality but the other thing I saw.

Gerry certainly knows what happened and either pulled back some on the offer or feels like it's worth the gamble. Either way I'm fine. I just want a damn center who can hold his own in the ACC because so far, it ain't looking that promising.
Exactly and I saw that same type of thing you described with the locker room. Surprise surprise a guy half injured and slacking making 1.8 mil in nil while the rest of the team that’s working hard gets squat is not going to get along with the rest of the team and the fans.

I don’t know anything about Owen but I trust my buddy. We both grew up in Cortland, huge Syracuse fans but live out in the Midwest now. Some posters have already alluded to some of the stories I was told. I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I’ve been a die hard who has been on this message board since its inception in the early 2000’s. I’m not a win at all costs type of person and yes we’ve seen our fair share of good and bad up on the hill. All I was trying to point out was we’ve seen some players who haven’t bought in and nobody needs that on a team. With that being said, everyone deserves a second chance. G Mac is trying to build a winning culture and if he believes in this kid I’m behind him. All I want is to be excited about this team again like I was as a kid growing up in CNY in 80’s and 90’s.

Kid played injured when he probably should have sat out for an awful team and Creighton fans are butt hurt about it.
So if the CU team was awful, which I totally agree with, and the tallest starter they had down low was 6’7” and OF was unplayable does that tell you anything? Nobody was butt hurt, it did not workout for him or CU, they asked him to move on as he would not see the court for them anytime in the near future. Maybe he was the10th man on a really bad team and will be starter and a good player on a different team? Perhaps GMAC wants him to play 5 minutes per half and be the 10th man at Syracuse as well, and be the 3rd center (emergency)? I’m perfectly OK with that plan by the way.

I watched a lot of tape on him today and that was against Iowa State and Nebraska. He looked to be clearly limping in both games to the point it makes me think he came back too early. In both games I thought Creighton played their best with him in and he looked to have a clear feel for the game. I don’t feel like I’m watching the same team at all that you’ve described. The 6’7” guy was getting cooked against Iowa State.. Would like to watch him against Oregon next if I can find video.

There was no locker room drama, no bad blood, a very connected team and the players and coaches like Owen,,,,,
I'm struggling with the tea leaves but sounds like some off the court issues more than anything else? Maybe I'm entirely misreading but it seems like there are things there that many wouldn't want to support if they knew.

As a player, seems worth a shout as a reclamation project but to be "unplayable" leads to more to the story. I don't expect you to share openly and appreciate your not airing others laundry but hopefully I'm picking up what you've been hinting at.

This thread has jumped the shark. At this point it's just where does he sign.
I agree. Unless this guy is secretly some KGB spy I could give a crap. We’ve seen way worse. We’ve also seen guys remedy their mistakes. I still remember the S show Devendorf got into way back in the day.

Syracuse offered him a boatload of money. He isn't some sub. They are offering the guy that played at Iowa a couple of years ago.

If Owen is a pass, What about Cooper Schweigert, current portal from Wake Forest. He had a down junior year but was excellent his first two years. Same size as Owen but would come at a much lower cost.
