We could play really big, with Ballard, Kyle and Freeman across the front. We would need exceptional shooters at guard for it to work, though. Unless we want to play the annoying mid oughts Georgetown or Pitt “Dump and Chase” offense.

Or Ballard and Kyle can allow Anthony to play with Starling and PG Transfer in a three guard, because they are big enough to cover it in some matchups when Freeman is resting.

I see Kyle as a guy who can get center minutes or power forward minutes, but he really needs good passers to get him his baskets. The one highlight I just saw has him creating his own basket exactly once, and it was a miracle he didn’t turn it over instead. Everything else was receiving lobs or drive and dishes while playing in the dunker position. He didn’t even seem to post up at UCLA.

To me the two following items can't both be true:
1) He is envisioned as a backup.
2) He is getting paid $700K (is that still the report)

One of them has to be wrong. Given what we are led to believe about our relatively modest P4 NIL, I can't see us being able to pay backups that and make it all work. So at $700K, for us that has to be starter role envisioned. Or he is not actually getting $700K.

I think they can be. Prices will be waaaaaay up this season. More money (increased NIL and house settlement) and smaller player pool (No COVID 5th years).

A couple thoughts. A few insiders have indicated our money situation is significantly better this year. So likely allot more latitude on spending. Second there seems to be a fair amount of reporting (some links provided on this board) suggesting that what gets presented of how much the players signed for and what they actually have been getting are two different things. Maybe Bees provided an article on this recently if memory is accurate and the players are mostly actually seeing around 50% of what is published. So if that's true, that would put Kyle closer to $300k.

I guess we will find out the answer in a few months.
I'm hoping you are right and we can budget this for a backup and make the other positions work.

This is where we have to live in transfer land - we aren’t an elite program. This kid performed well enough ar the mid major level to be one of the most sought after transfers. Didn’t work out for him at his first P5 school but the potential is still there. I’m ok with going after this type of kids especially when the athleticism and length is obvious.

I just don’t see us getting guys like Donovan Dent, at least until we start winning more

Easy there, we have good information that Syracuse is paying the men’s basketball roster $4 million directly. That figure ignores all other NIL funding.

If the numbers are accurate, Kyle’s $700k is 17.5% of what the school is paying players directly.

We can’t get worked up about our backups, guys!

Kyle could be really good, or he could be exceptional depth. If he harnesses all his athleticism and strength, it could be amazing. Kyle could be the best cheap transfer we ever got.

There is a tendency to worry about every signing, but here’s a baseball metaphor. Think of Kyle as our new middle reliever, not our new ace.

Look at it this way. If the numbers I and a few others are hearing about our NIL/house settlement available dollars is true/close he’s getting about 7% of it. Is that out of line for a kid with potential who’s had success at a lower level? I don’t know.

Where have you been? Welcome back. We do not have a modest NIL. We are competitive.
 
Just read a UCLA message board and most were disappointed losing him and blaming Cronin for not playing him more. They said Cronin didn’t value nor like to play post up guys nor rim protectors for some reason. They remarked how athletic he was. To tell you the truth to me not playing him much didn’t make a lot of sense from their posts. They are hoping they don’t lose a 7’3” player named Mara too. They said Cronin seems to like power forward types than centers. Take it for what it’s worth which probably isn’t much.
 
My thought is this -after watching the foul fest that was Duke vs Arizona - you can't have enough athletic bigs on the bench. Foul trouble is real.

Donnie is pretty talented. I'm hearing that Sadiq and Kiyan have some skills as well. I trust your talent evaluation though. Recognizing talent and being able to coach up talent, might be more of the issue, in my opinion.
