Cal Postgame

Carlos is a 22 year old SR PG.

The way he ran down the corner to get doubled like that…repeatedly….oh and he’s 5 foot nothing…was mind boggling.

Really showed that his skill allowed him to play that mid major level (dribbling through presses or beating traps with shorter players) but he really just doesn’t translate at all up a level. Cant make this mistake in the portal again
Good call. Physical attributes over stat lines.

Yes the majority of the NIL budget needs to go to a veteran leader PG and we are going to have to overpay to get him to come to Syracuse. Then get a defensive rim-running center who can set screens and block shots. Not the other way around hopefully Red has learn his lesson this offseason and changed his mind on those early million dollar center reports
100%. One step further. Need them to click with the frosh and can be ready to go day one. Thinking back to the Eddie stuff, getting Carlos late. Also with Taylor and Davis I wonder if they had any idea what their role would even be. Everything was late and then more late.

Kiyan and Sadiq along with JJ. TBD Donnie. Guys in the portal are gonna know what they’re getting into. We should be able to quickly get the squad together and on the court early. Get the roles defined early and none of this musical chairs crap.

The worst thing we did last year besides the talent evaluation was expecting all these guys from all over to just click in November. That’s on Autry and maybe lesser so some NIL issues.

I rewatched and didn't think so.
I'm calling bs on that. It's one thing to watch one of these from the start. I did, but it took an assorted variety of alcoholic beverages and a couple gummies. However, you're claiming you went to your dvr and watched it again?? No way. Just no way.

I watched the first minute and last minute of the game. So can someone explain to me if this was a case of SU winning or Cal losing?

I see that Cal shot 29% overall and 6 for 35 from three. That's mind numblingly awful. Did we cause much of that, or were they open looks that they simply missed?

Once they were missing the zone kept them missing.

He certainly does on D
They were afraid of McLeod when he played in the first half. Guess a 7’4” guy looming seemed to intimidate them. He blocked one shot and they were done challenging him. His screens on offense impressed me. He held still till they bit on it waiting to roll to the basket. Guards must have liked his screens up top. Once no Cal player switched on him when he rolled to the basket and the pass shocked him, he bobbled it but thankfully regrouped and made the shot.

He is a big dude. It's a natural reaction for people to be intimidated, taking it inside and trying to shoot over him. I like that he gave out a couple solid fouls, too. Give 'em a whack if they dare to come inside.

Plus surprisingly besides scoring those 2 points, he had a block, an assist, 3 rebounds, no TO’s in his 9 minutes. I guess I had pretty low expectations but he did okay in spot duty.

Finally had a chance to watch the game.
Great to see a fast start and some defensive intensity.
Taylor was great and JJ had some big shots when the game got close.
I was high on Davis in the beginning of the year, he has seemed to regress last few games.

If his foot wasn't the problem, I think he could have been giving us this all along. Just like playing Kyle Cuffe has given the team a boost, after not playing him at all for the first 10 games.

Totally agree, but my point was more of the mid-major player as a whole.

A guy like Davis as a backup has been fine and has his moments. He's clearly undersized vs better teams.

Carlos simply doesn't have the size or skill to compete vs better teams. His skill level worked at Hofstra to a degree, he still wasn't an elite player there, but he literally can't finish at the rim at this level. He can't shoot 3s to overcome it. He can't defend the speed at this level. He doesn't have the size so players shoot over him at this level. I know some would use the "he was supposed to be a backup". I don't see how he can play for 10 mins vs better teams.

Make no mistake...He's trying out there...he just doesn't have the attributes. If we are going to play the mid major game to fill the starting rotation, it has to be someone who was ELITE at that level. Every guy we got was "pretty good" and all SRs at that, so not even someone we can build on.

We have eight different players who average between 30% and 33% from deep. It's amazing how consistently mediocre of a shooting team we are.

Consistently mediocre occasionally good? ;);)
