Calvin Russell Official / Out Indefinitely

Russell will be out until the 2027 season, the 2026 season is far from over. Can still have a very successful year without Calvin, it sucks for sure because everybody was excited to see him play but it should not derail the entire season, 7-8 wins in my opinion should be the goal, if they win 4-5 games it should not be an excuse not even remotely

It amazes me that despite the repeated info about NIL and how it works. Every week people still don’t get how NIL works.

These are not normal contracts like a regular business. There are no insurance policies written into NIL deals. They can’t be performance based. A multi year contract doesn’t prevent the player from entering the portal after a year. Player could skip the playoffs and still get all of their NIL.
You can get insurance policies on these deals. But they’re expensive to the point where it doesn’t make financial sense. But you can get insurance on pretty much anything. There are businesses that exist now.

But you do? I haven’t assumed anything about his success or failure, just that his performance so far doesn’t scream potential NFL player. It’s others who are saying because he was a mediocre MAC player he’s bound to be good here. Maybe so, maybe not, but either way I doubt he’ll ever be on an NFL roster.
When all else fails, change the goal posts? He just needs to be a good player for SU. Lots of good players don’t make the NFL.

My bad then. Didn’t realize that was allowed under the NIL rules.

It’s because it’s not on the contract it’s on the player.

They are insuring the players body because their body is what is making them the contracts /nil

Hope that made sense

Is that right? A player only needs insurance if the NIL contract / contract with the school says they don’t get the money if they’re injured. My gut instinct is thats not how the contracts are structured. Rather Its the NIL counterparty / school that needs insurance if the player is injured and they don’t get the performance they in effect are paying for.

I think you may be conflating insurance a player gets for injury for loss of future earnings v NIL/rev share insurance, but I may be wrong.

Well NIL is not pay for play. So anyone can get NIL. NIL contracts can not hinge on if someone is playing or not.

this makes more sense, insurance on future earnings, not insurance on the NIL deal itself. They may use that as a valuation tool to see what they need to underwrite but it wouldn't be against the NIL itself because the deals aren't performance based.

We are jinxed. Torn ACL for our highest ranked football recruit in decades. Donnie was our highest rated hoops recruit also in decades and he has had to fight the injury bug.

Calvin - good luck in your recovery !!!

Yea but i think there’d still be a loss of value to the counterparty if the player is injured - the player loses notoriety and therefore not as beneficial to the counterparty from a marketing perspective. Wouldnt a nil contract be much more valuable if calvin had 1500 receiving yards and 10 tds?

Also calvin undoubtedly is getting rev share and now the school isnt getting the benefit of its bargain. That sounds like an insurable risk. I wonder if under the rules, if a player is injured for the year, if you can get some credit for the rev share - otherwise youre still restricted by the cap.

One thing i could see for nil insurance for a player is the insurer acts as a backstop if the nil counterparty doesnt pay/goes bankruptcy/etc.

I wasn’t the one who brought up Meeks. So who moved the goalposts?

Yes, that makes perfect sense. It didn’t make sense that could be in NIL contracts specifically.

It was you that moved the goalposts. Meeks was brought up for his performance at SU after limited stats at a previous school, not because he is an NFL practice squad player.

Thamel confirmed torn Achilles.

Doing some research, this surgeon is known for the "Speedbridge" achilles reconstruction technique, the same surgical technique used on Cam Akers when he came back to the Rams in just 5 1/2 months after tearing his. My guess would be that's why there is a chance that he could play late in the season.

You’re certainly entitled to your thoughts. I don’t believe we’ve ever had a guy with mediocre stats at a mid level program become someone who produces “at a high level”. But I guess we’ll see.
Don’t remember from where he came but (so) Emba ?
