Chance Westry Transferring to Syracuse

I think Chance could have been a defensive stopper for us. Fans look at pts, rebounds, assists, Okay. But stopping the other teams best scorer from having any kind of night helps teams win.

Hopefully he can be that for the conference season or even a couple non conference games as well. Hoping Quadir and Cuffe can give us strong minutes to help overcome.

Agreed! I was super excited at the prospect of Chance and Judah locking up the other team’s 2 best perimeter guys.

I’ve got no problem with Bell starting this year - if he lights it up from 3. I’m not expecting miracles in the rest of his game, but hopefully some clear improvement defensively and on the boards.

But given his game….we need big time shooting out of him. Like Shumpert, Nichols, White type 3 point shooting.

I hear ya. Do I think our record last season is noticeably better if we have someone else besides Bell seeing major mins at small forward last season? Hell no. That’s why some of the criticism feels too focused on Bell and not our other options who will also need to take a big step forward if we want to improve as a team. Taylor for instance I think we also need to see some serious improvements to his shooting and scoring in general for it to work out because he was also very poor on the boards last season.

This makes the Westry injury especially devastating because I thought he had a shot to push them and get serious minutes there with his size and athleticism. Hoping we can see some serious time with a Benny-McCloud-Brown front court if Bennys offensive game has truly taken a step forward.

I assumed Westry would be in our top 3-4 players even if he came off the bench, like Edelin in 03 and Waiters in 12.

Hopefully we still get that(maybe come January like Edelin?)

And hopefully Copeland, Cuffe, Taylor, Bell come through. At least we have depth at the perimeter spots. More than we’ve had in my memory.

he isn't past tense yet...can still happen...give him a Chance ;)
Don't deny Syracuse fans the opportunity for pessimism. The woe is us feeling is strong with many. And while I am just as optimistic about what Westry will bring to this team I look forward to seeing what a healthy Cuffe can do. I've had vision of small guards running circles around our big guards. See I can be pessimistic too!

Yeah, I'm a real pessimist.

The offensive player always has the advantage. I could score on players who are twice as good as as I ever was. That is why basketball games are high scoring affairs. This is not soccer . A really good offensive player is not going to be shut down. Off nights happen but that does not always mean it was because of the defender. Given our roster we need a shooting guard that can shoot. Perhaps Chance can fill that role in the future. I hope so.

Good teams will have shooters all over the floor. We need to keep up. We want to spread the floor. If the other team is able to pack it in we lose.

Perhaps JJ can be that guy now.

If not…..blame it on being in the ACC.

Honestly this is a really good point. I was not high on him at all but I was admittedly only viewing it through the offensive side.

I’ve got a huge issue. He isn’t good at all.

Can’t believe I’m still having to do this.

Same stuff dealing with the past whatever years.

Keep playing the most inefficient and incapable player and see what happens.

Zone won't protect him this year. If he can't stay in front of his man he might fall behind Copeland, Taylor and even Cuffe before Westry gets back. He has to defend, rebound and hit his shots.

You can't have guys who are a matador on defense. We've seen how that works even if they could shoot the rock.

Agreed.. The only thing I would say is even if he's not Shump or DNIC level this season, at least show us signs of their trajectory.

Kinda agree... But! I will say good Team Defense can neutralize a great offensive player. Sometimes that may mean allowing lessor players to score more, have main man work for his buckets and shutdown everyone else or grind him down so lessor players have to make the decisions. You have to have the pieces for this or the offensive player can still have the advantage.

My thing is getting to the point where we don't care about how we matchup or how we adjust to other team's players or game. I want everyone to have to worry about adjusting to us.

Look at the highest scoring pros. Some are too big and strong to be shut down, some are too skilled and some are too creative. Good team defense is an asset but only when combined with superior offense. NBA champs, the way the game is currently played, have offensive superiority. The days of Bill Russell are history. Our starters should be able to spread the floor.

Yeah, NBA is a different beast because it's built on/for offensive players and scoring. Most of the matchups are scorers guarding scorers and the best of the best at that. Few teams actually work hard at trying to stop the scoring, they just want to score more.

I think Red is intelligent enough to pull the plug if he shows little improvement. We don't have time to around this year with the schedule. There's enough other guys on the team to take Bells place even with Westry's injury. I think he's just giving him the first shot to succeed with the hope he plays better without JB.

It’s nice to have a coach provide some detail to injuries compared to our FB coach where we have literally no idea if it’s season ending or 1 week. So it sounds like a meniscus if he is walking still. Really we should be eyes after the new year start of ACC play as a timeline to when we ideally want chance ready. “We feel good about it” is a great comment
