Nobody would say it, but Autry reeled both Westry and Starling in within a week of JB retiring.

I think both of them said to Red " I'm Cuse all the way but I don't want to play for Coach Boeheim."

It's all about relationships, and Autry is a hell of a recruiter. Syracuse has a lot going for it, but it all comes down to him.

He's practicing with the team now. Can play multiple positions but needs to get the rust off. Normally I wouldn't surmise a paywall article but this was at a free event so feels like fair game.

Westry came here because of Gmac. There was an article after he committed about his relationship with Gmac since like the 7th grade. He never said why he committed to auburn first but the prevailing rumor was $$$.

Autry managed to get 20 wins out of a dysfunctional group last year.
With a team that buys into his plan, this should be a fun year. And having a real point guard will help.
Syracuse good teams always had a willing distributer on the team.

The lure of Notre Dame is pretty strong. Gorgeous campus, great academics, many people would choose that first.

I heard JB (post retirement) confirm that rumor in a lunch. Essentially a handler pushed him to Auburn. He wanted to play at Syracuse and regretted not doing it from day one. He was also close with Gmac too. I love what Autry has done but I think westry was coming no matter what.

He announced sometime in January that the 22-23 season would be his last. Not really fired.

Eh. Pretty sure the phrase was "mutual separation" - which means fired. Not every termination ends in a ball of flames with someone being dragged out of the building. At my firm if it's unfortunately necessary to terminate an associate we tell them in secret without telling the rest of the firm, give them 3 more months to continue working so they can find another job and then tell everyone, including their new employer, they quit. Helps save face for them and helps their career. I think that's what you saw here, and since he gave ND 20 years and was their winningest bball coach, it would have been poor judgment not to let him leave with dignity.

He literally wasn’t doing his job at all the last year of his tenure haha he 100% got fired but in a nice sweet youre a legend of our program way
