My best friend in middle school died on the ice during a hockey game his freshman (HS) year due to undiagnosed mono. So, IIRC there was mention of it possibly being Mono?
Which, if true, explains the caution afterward.
When I got Mono the fall of my Sr year in HS, I couldn’t do any contact sports, and wasn’t even allowed to ski for several months, as any impact could rupture the spleen, which typically gets enlarged as a result of Mono.
If Chance were to catch an elbow the wrong way, it could be Very Bad.
His spleen ruptured - wasn't even a big hit.
I had mono+hepatitis which made things scary.
