Chance Westry Transferring to Syracuse

So, IIRC there was mention of it possibly being Mono?

Which, if true, explains the caution afterward.

When I got Mono the fall of my Sr year in HS, I couldn’t do any contact sports, and wasn’t even allowed to ski for several months, as any impact could rupture the spleen, which typically gets enlarged as a result of Mono.

If Chance were to catch an elbow the wrong way, it could be Very Bad.
My best friend in middle school died on the ice during a hockey game his freshman (HS) year due to undiagnosed mono.
His spleen ruptured - wasn't even a big hit.

I had mono+hepatitis which made things scary.

This is what I have thought all along and why he was on the bench while "ill". Makes total sense. I had mono in college at SU my senior year.

Even if Carlos calms down and figures it out - it’s crazy Red came into this year with 1 PG on the roster - and undersized mid major transfer at that. And our expected back up is a 6’6 “point forward” coming off a major injury,

He knew Lucas Taylor wasn’t a PG, everyone knew Cuffe wasn’t a PG.

I’m just shocked we couldn’t get ANY veteran Pg with a pulse to at least come in and be our first PG off the bench.

He kept Cuffe and McLeod, added Taylor and Peter - but no PG?

Carlos legit has to play at least 30mpg even if he stinks . JJ has too much on his plate to be the PG too. Choppa isn’t ready for that either.

3/16 from the field , 4/8 from the line, and 14 total assists despite playing 32mpg against the easiest stretch of our schedule. Think about that - he’s played 96 minutes in 3 games - we scored 74, 86, 104 points yet he has 14 assists and 11 points TOTAL

Carlos needs to step up but this is absolutely on Red for building the roster like this.
It seems like many on this board forget about current state. Tony Bennett and others left for a reason.

Last year there was no point guard, so thats a 100% improvement!

Build him a bubble in his apartment. Make him wear hazmat suits and a helmet to class and meals. No contagions or contact. Preserve that kid.
Comments like this are BS. Chance is probably many times tougher than all of us - mentally and physically - its BS to suggest he's inherently fragile and needs to be treated as such. I don't mean to single you out ZZ, sorry, it's just post after post of similar type sentiments.

Coaches are aware that you never really know what you have until you see these guys perform in games over time.

JB said this all the time- guys come in highly rated, but until they're playing in a "real" game, you can only hope. And think of how many "diamonds" he ended up recruiting?
Maybe not all 5-stars but they were allowed to develop into good/great players- which is almost impossible in the nil era.

Successful scouting is more important than ever.

Instead of getting a guy with potential out of high school and having him learn on the bench until he's a junior, our depth and some number of our starters every year are going to be guys that we get from the transfer portal.

Making sure we get the right low-mid major upperclassmen transfers and high major disgruntled/injured is going to determine our success.

Enter Kline and the analytics team to sift through thousands of player's stats and watch thousands of hours of game film to bring the right ones to Red.

Saw a video on MJ. Folks told him not to go to UNC, he would ne buried behind other recruits, including incoming #1 recruit, Buzz Peterson.
First day of practice, MJ said how can he (Peterson) be #1, he hasn’t played me?

Saw another video where James Worthy said that in MJ's freshman year, Worthy was the BMOC and bonafide star of the team. Soon as Jordan came in he went to Worthy's dorm and challenged him to a one-on-one. They'd play for hours against one another, until finally, just like the father who has to admit he can no longer beat his teenage son, Worthy stopped playing him.
"I never told Mike, but by the 3rd week I knew he was the best player on the team".

One would think with the Tech today that they would be able to see how the spleen is and not guess that it has an issue if that is the concern.

Knowing the issue and being safe is much different than when many of us were kids and people had no idea how sick some people were and playing with safety issues.

feeling is that chance is “fully back” but he still doesn’t look 100%. In his case we don’t even know what 100% looks like for him.

I don’t think we will see him tonight unless it’s a blowout but it’s a possibility.

I posed that theory (no inside info). It seems to explain everything. No reason to put the kid's life at risk.

Yes, the hyperbolic absurdism was "BS." Congratulations on your recognition skills!

The point, if it was elusive, is that Chase is not some china doll that can't brush his teeth without getting hurt and these insinuations that he is are bs. It's bad enough he's had this luck, but leave it to cuse fans to color him soft and fragile.

It wasn't that elusive. Google "sarcasm."

If you're so inclined, search my other Chance posts and see if i have ever referred to him in ways that suggest he is "soft and fragile."

If you're fighting against the truth that he has been with us for over a season and we haven't seen him on the court yet, that he has had procedures and rehab on two(?) knees, and that he subsequently has been held out of competition because of "illness," and that many fans are frustrated by this, then the internet probably isn't for you.

I will add that this thread has enlightened me to the severity and consequences of Mono. I only knew/was acquainted with one or two people who ever had it, and this was back in the mid-late 80s. All i ever 'knew' about it was 'the kissing disease,' you got tired and missed a month of school. My ignorance, but in my defense, i never had to know anything about it... In my defense, as well, with both Chance and Naheem, i have been asking why they haven't been playing, but also have not criticized Red for those decisions, because i expect 'medical' issues might be the reasons.
