Chukwu vs. Melo

Somebody with more time and motivation than me, can probably find a highlight of Dashonte Riley doing something similar. Just saying. here you go: YouTube Video Heck, I bet there are some sweet highlights somewhere of Chino doing impressive-looking things.

Any more notes from practice this year? You seem pretty sure/solid on your expectations.

So your saying he can play? Based on what?

I'm simply not having unfounded expectations of greatness, from a nearly completely unknown player, of questionable skill and experience.
It's not like he was a McD AA before going to Providence. And he didn't do much while there.

Some people around here are talking like he's going to be an unholy hybrid of Etan Thomas, Fab Melo, and Ultron. ;)
I'd be pretty happy with "taller & bigger Baye, minus the greased oven mitts". :p

Melo was really good his soph year. I take that production in a heartbeat

Well, duh! I would too. ANYBODY would.
BE DPOY-level play? Like I said - duh!
Sign us up for that right now.

It's just that, it's highly unlikely we're gonna get that.
THAT is my point, which apparently is somehow not coming thru.

We now return you to your completely unfounded player fantasies, already in progress...

You seem more certain of your conclusions than anyone in the thread. I've never seen Chukwu play. I was just looking at his numbers, which were pretty similar to Fab's as freshmen. It suggested that it was possible he might be as good as a sophomore. We'll see. In the meantime, it's OK to hope.

Fab made a huge leap as a sophomore and was exceptionally good that season (Big East defensive player of the year, a game-changing defensive presence with a developing offensive game). Chukwu might approach that next season, but it's not likely.

Actually I'll take a 7-2 version of Keita who can make a play like that in the video, (which I never saw Keita make). That would be pretty good.

I actually liked Riley and wished we'd held onto him. He wanted to follow Rob Murphy, who had recruited him.

Coleman would have waited for the ball to come to him, dribbled twice and then gone back up with it against three defenders- if he still had the ball.

I chuckled at that. I have a question for you all: Who will be the one getting the token start and Boeheimed? Will Coleman or Chucku be the BMK coming off the bench for the Boeheimed starter? Or will JB change to the more traditional approach of minutes for a starter?

Or......will a beefed up Lydon shock the world and slide over a spot a spot from wherever he is, and a 3 or a 4 come in when the center is Boeheimed for however long? Remember where you read it if it happens folks.

Are we allowed to remember where we read it if it doesn't happen?

Ha, certainly! I'm just trying to encourage thinking differently about less likely scenarios on occasion. I figured I was in a win/win situation...and I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you and that pesky dog avatar! (Skooby Do reference)

Keep in mind that this year for Coleman was a recovery year from micro fracture I expect a big year from him nex year. He put in the work and will be rewarded.

Good call. Even though he seems like a guy Boeheim would like to Boeheim, as a 5th year senior who has battled back from injury and paid his dues in the system, I'd expect JB to reward him. I hope to heck that he continues to improve so that next year this board won't be filled with angry posts when JB does. I have an idea it could be like that, with the specter of a 7'2 center on the bench.

I do like using the term "Boeheim" in it's verb form. I suppose I can sacrifice my desire to use it next season in exchange for quality play from all of the starters, but I will miss the word.

I'd like to add an urbandictionary.com entry for Boeheim (verb), like I did for ***t**** (noun). Again it would only be a small audience that understands it, but that isnt completely uncommon on there.

Chukwu is probably not going to have eye popping numbers, but at the very least he helps completely solidify the 5. Between Coleman and Chukwu we should get 40 minutes of competent play at center.

I'm hoping he proves himself to be an elite enough shot blocker that we occasionally press. That might be dreaming too big though.

"Boeheimed" was coined by the legendary Igor. It's original meaning was a player of obviously superior ability being glued to the SU bench because Jim Boeheim just doesn't like him or is isn't smart enough to recognize how good he is, (but Igor is).

I figure Coleman will start but split time with Chukwu. What that split will be and under what circumstances each of these very different players will be used will be interesting to see.

Unless Chukwu can functionally do something as a dive man on PnR, I really think he'll just clog the offense.

I could almost envision 3 minute shifts. Coleman starts, gets out of position and gets yanked. Chucku comes in, commits a silly foul, gets yanked. Wash, rinse, repeat.

His problem was as much his style of play as his physical problem. Until he learns to stop taking a dribble and then 2 pump fakes allowing for the opponents to surround him when he is within 3 ft of the basket, he'll never be successful. With his frame, grab the ball, keep it high and muscle up. Do that and he'll be at least 50% better.

Where is Fab Melo now? Never any kind of student, he was in a big rush to go pro.

He's back in Brazil, playing pro ball.

He should probably have never left.
While you are right, and I agree, he never seem to really want to be in school. Even when his first year showed he had to work to be any kind of player, he didn't seem to want to put in the effort.

I believe his physical problems created his style of play. If he can regain his explosion he won't have to take that dribble and give those pump fakes. I hope we will be replacing a few backboards next year. Injuries create a lot of problems ask Tigger Woods.

Fab Melo didn't want to put the effort in? He went from a borderline useless freshman to the big east defensive player of the year and probably the most important player on a team that lost only 3 games all year. Say what you will about his academics but he put a lot of work in on the court during his stay here.
