Clemson Postgame

The number of possessions where Syracuse never gets the ball inside the 3-point line is brutal.

There was a media timeout in the second half and the subsequent possessions went like this:

1. Clemson: Work the ball around for 10-15 seconds, easy dunk.
2. Syracuse: George and Starling dribble around a few high screens set by the bigs interspersed with a few short passes and dribble handoffs for 25 seconds. George ends up with the ball on the left wing 25 feet away from the basket and fires a desperation 3 that draws nothing but air and results in a shot clock violation.

This is the second year in a row where Syracuse has brought in a solid/above average point guard from other systems and the Cuse system has made both of them look unplayable for long stretches.

I’ve had some issues with the coaching before. Mainly issues with the players and lack of smarts, but today was a coaching disaster. Clemson had space, ball movement, wide open shots and layups, perfect in bounds plays and Cuse had nothing. They ran 1 play to start second half. That was it. 3 possessions in a row the ball didn’t go inside the 3 point line. THATS INSANITY. This isn’t a talent problem even though JJ and NG technically lost the game for them, but there is just nothing easy. Kingz not involved offensively at all. Makes no sense.

JJ might be one of my least favorite players ever. He’s unfazed by anything. Doesn’t care if he dribbles it off his leg out of bounds, doesn’t dive for a loose ball. Hes probably the softest player that I’ve seen on a cuse team in a long time. And quite frankly I don’t even think he cares if they lose. He’s made close to a million dollars last couple of years and he isn’t worth it. Good kid sure. Give me a winner and someone with intensity. Donnie at least gets mad and it helped his play today. JJ is awful on so many levels and I’ve had it
JJ has got worse every season here. He’s a shell of who he was the back half of his sophomore year.

I believe we've addressed this by mostly having our big men post up as often as possible outside the three point line. Then they hand it back to the guard and we reset. It should work 100% of the time, but hasn't thus far.

Gun to your head, what’s the one game you think this team will 100% win?

It’s 2026 and we’ve yet to see how they can handle a true road game, so while BC looks tempting, I think Cal or Pitt at home are the easiest games remaining.

I would put my money/life on Pitt. Both coaches will likely be lame ducks at that point.

I recall a lot of people doing handstands and jumping for joy when Autry brought in JJ and told Girard to hit the road. Girard ended up playing in the elite 8. JJ has never even sniffed the floor in an ncaa tourney game and it looks like that may be the case again this year.

would JB really want some hotshot coming in after him and winning right away?

what if his successor actually won a natty quickly?

might tarnish his legacy

JB wanting red to take over is crazy to me. JB knows basketball so well...he cant think red is a good option here...so then how could he want him?
Didn’t you answer your own question? JB didn’t want a winner following him and wanted Red to take over. Repeat it a few times….

JJ doesn’t know what to do without the ball. Watch him off ball

If JJ had just had a rough day shooting I could take that, but he also made some lazy turnovers and had some clear lapses on defense. Put it all together and it is insane that he played that much, and pretty unacceptable for a freaking senior. The only problem is that George is not much better and can rarely draw attention 1v1. In the end he filled the stat sheet more, but still is not nearly effective enough at pg. But part of that is also ONCE AGAIN on our complete lack of offensive structure, spacing, and off ball movement. Its such a disaster on O, which is a damn shame since the defense is solid. It is 1000% on Autry and the staff. Nearly every basket was a contested iso shot that felt like a miracle it went in.

Clemson played as a cohesive unit with excellent passing and offensive sets that create easy looks and we played pick up ball. That, along with Nait and JJ’s miserable offense, is why we lost.

Our margin of error to make the tourney is becoming extremely small.
Lunardi has Clemson as an 8 seed and we have the talent to be at their level or better. But the talent has to produce and it has not done so on a consistent basis to date. I doubt a coaching change will occur mid-season so we are stuck with Autry and pray that he improves.

This is a game you have to win if you want to make the NCAAT.
Brownell coached the pants off Red. After every TO Clemson had a play to score an easy bucket. Our offense is stuck in the mud. No clear offensive plan. If not for Donnie's sheer talent coming out in the 2nd half this is a 15 point loss -- at home. So depressing.

Your most experienced players need to show your inexperienced players how to treasure the ball. Anyone can have a bad game. But anyone can also see when you are a player that just does not see turnovers and poor shot selection as much of an issue. It is what it is.

Last year, I questioned the IQ of the players on the team thinking no way Red was that inept.

Now this year, almost entirely new team, I’ve shifted to the obvious. I really can’t criticize any of our players. Are our players perfect? Of course not. They all have their flaws but that’s just the nature of college basketball.

But they also have a lot of talent and I really think we’d have a solid 8.5 man rotation that would be a Top 20 team with an actual coach who could lead them.
