Clemson Postgame

Girard was misused for 4 years here because of Boeheim. He also wasn’t in good shape, and played much better at Clemson because he took it seriously. Frustrating all around.
I don't believe the conditioning story.

Soo…yeah. It’s coaching.

Went my first game this year today. Got close enough to see/hear player interaction. Players looked lost on offense and didn’t play with purpose on that end of the court.

Just horrible the difference in the two teams out of timeouts. They abused our players with set plays. We on the other hand did not.

Lots of stuff people have pointed in this thread have been well stated.

I will defend the players a bit. It’s hard to play well without a game plan. And on the offensive end, it is clearly a rudderless ship.

The guy I’m going to defend is Nait. There is no plan to execute. It’s hard to be a point guard, when the other 4 players aren’t running sets or running them correctly. Theres no way he suddenly turned into a dunce. If you give him a good offense to run. He’ll execute it.

At the end of the game Donnie essentially said “give me the ball and get out of my way”. It almost worked.

If there’s no sets to run, it renders George, Kings and Betsy useless. They can’t create on their own. The only players we have that can are Donnie, and Kiyan, and I only trust one of those two. JJ really can’t either, and he’s way too sloppy with the ball to be given the leeway he has. I simply can’t trust a senior that at least once a game dribbles the ball out of bounds like a 3rd grader. I’m sure his teammates notice as well. You can say to reporters “he’s our leader” but I get the sense none of them truly believe it.

The defense is good enough to compete. The offense is inept. And I suspect Englested is responsible for the defense.

Next coach up..,

Looking back it would have suited us better to have single digit wins both of the past two years to get this whole thing in motion before. At least maybe then it doesn’t overlap with Kiyan being here when Red crashes and burns.
In years past, I opined it would be better for us longterm to have a prescribed burn—like where a forest is intentionally burned to facilitate new growth. Instead, we have continuity—the extension of a downward trend. Apparently, it didn’t get bad enough for the AD/BoT to recognize the need for tabula rasa. When you hit rock bottom, sometimes it’s better to get there in one swift thud, rather than a slow slide.

Btw, I really want to know the catastrophic events that would have happened if we had bucked JB and hired an outside hire. Because between the end of JB’s tenure and with Red so far, it’s been pretty awful.

I’m serious - can someone tell me?

I keep hearing how hell would come down upon the earth due to it.

But Syracuse basketball is literally only the memories of years gone by at this point.
Someone would have got hit in the face with an errant water bottle.

I recall a lot of people doing handstands and jumping for joy when Autry brought in JJ and told Girard to hit the road. Girard ended up playing in the elite 8. JJ has never even sniffed the floor in an ncaa tourney game and it looks like that may be the case again this year.
I do too.

What a weird offensive scheme. There was one sequence where kiyan and Donnie just kept handing the ball to each other for about 20 seconds that kind of summed it all up. The weak uncertain passing clues me in that the guys don’t know what they should be doing

There are also too many instances where our 4 will get the ball - dribble in place for a bit, will have an open pass, dribble in place some more, then either decide to pass it once good passing options are still available...or just start pivoting for 8 minutes until they can throw up a somewhat awkward shot.

Get the ball, assess, make the quick decision. But everything about our offense screams...do anything but that. Instead we stay in place until desperation sets in.

Clemson played as a cohesive unit with excellent passing and offensive sets that create easy looks and we played pick up ball. That, along with Nait and JJ’s miserable offense, is why we lost.

Our margin of error to make the tourney is becoming extremely small.

This 100x. And I don't blame the other players either-- sure it would be nice for them to get together after practice and install an offense all on their own, but that's unrealistic and maybe be different than what Red wants anyway. For all we know, the offensive process is exactly how Red has instructed them.

Tbh, it's not much different from Boeheim's later years in terms of a lack of plan, with the difference being that we play faster and without accountability. Faster is not good for us right now, because over more possessions, the fact that we are the worse team (because of coaching) is more likely to play itself out.

Did not learn anything new today:

Freeman was the best player on the floor.

JJ and George cannot consistently play together. One of them should not start.

Agree that George looks bad because of Autry’s “offense”

Kingz needs to be a greater part of the offense.

Autry was totally out coached

I will never ever root against the Orange and I will not have to.

Autry wanted JJ and they will both be leaving SU together … and I will be very happy.

Not sure why JJ gets so much heat on here. He's getting asked to do things that he's not capable of doing and should not play more than 25min unless he's really hot. Again, this goes back to Red.

The subbing pattern is way out of whack with Donnie back...

Reds presser was terrible as usual. Game comes down to two possessions late, nah, it was the 4 and 5 minute stretches where your team couldn’t get a field goal

But if it makes you feel better red is proud of their “fight”
Ha, I just started watching and stopped after 52 seconds.

Red “felt like we didn’t move the ball around for the first time this year on offense” and “We couldn’t get JJ going. He’s a big part of what we do”.

Can’t take him seriously to listen to anymore nonsense.

Syracuse needs great coaches to be successful in hoops and football. We can’t win with just recruiters. Few probably can, but at SU you need to scheme wins. When we have talent and coaching it’s a wonderful time to be a fan. We’ve had that in the past, and I hope we have that again sometime in the future.

FWIW, “much better” didn’t result in statistically significant improvements in any stats except turnovers (1 fewer per game).

For being completely misused here, you’d expect to see the better play result in better stats.

well said. Encapsulates it all.

I laughed when I saw someone ask Clemsons coach about our offense. He tried to defend the movement and all I could think was, “acc coaches must love having an automatic win on the schedule.”

Coaches around the nation find all kinds of out of bounds plays setting back cuts. What’s SU’s inbounds play you ask? Time and time again is throwing it up to Kyle in the corner.

We stand around on offense watching the ball (30 feet away from the hoop) and expect different results settling for contested 3’s. And consistently get screwed up on D after the pick n roll or pop from up top. Guards consistently get into the lane on one head or ball fake. And don’t get me started on JJ getting blown bye time after time.

We are watching Reds last year, thank the lord.

I really want to think the best of Red. I want to believe that he’s a smart guy who sees our issues clearly, but just can’t figure out how to teach the solutions to our players.

But for the first time I’m thinking that maybe he isn’t as savvy as I thought. No one can look at our offense and claim that it’s operating well. Not when we rank in the low 300s for assists and 3 point shooting.

Yup, makes me think of when Marcus Freeman was interviewed at half time of the ND game. Play Syracuse and you have to come up with some creative ways to keep it classy when talking about our football or basketball team. (sigh)
