Coach and Cooney

When watching the replay (for me) of the LaTech game, I saw that during the first time out Boeheim shoved Trevor and was very angry. I was shocked, because I don't know if I have ever seen him get physical with a player before. Trevor certainly came alive during that game, though! I didn't bring it up to the board because it seemed - I don't know - negative. But today someone at work asked me about it and wondered what our board thought? I said, "I don't know! " If this was discussed, I missed the entire thread, and so apologize.

But I thought I would ask: what was that about? Does anyone know?

I noticed it too, though it seemed more a getting his attention shove/tap as it was to the back of his shoulder. I think Trevor nodded his head right after to whatever Boeheim was saying, from what I remember.

that's what I saw, too. TC didn't seem to be bothered by it in the moment, and he responded with his best overall game of the season (not that it necessarily had anything to do with The Contact).

I noticed it, was surprised by it, but it didn't really bother me. I have been pushed and shoved much more vigorously by coaches.

Saw it as well. Definitely never seen JB do that before. He got control of himself right away though and so not a big deal, although a little unsettling as I watched it live.

That was my reaction, too. The Woody Hayes reference here was bizarre. He punched a Clemson player, for gosh sakes.

Ugh... I already dread where this thread will lead...
Well, I was a little worried about that, too, but I think all the reactions have been fine. Because I honestly wanted to know what people who know a lot think! Bees gave a very specific answer which I didn't understand at all, but I appreciated it. I also didn't think the shove was that bad, but it was out of character, and I was wondering.

Honestly, this may sound silly, but I trust the board! And I don't think syracuse.com monitors us for news, but I understand people feeling slightly paranoid. Anyone who knows me knows: 1. I love JB, 2. I don't look for trouble.

Thanks, guys!

What is so bizarre about thinking about Woody Hayes when you see a coach aggressively put his hands on a player?

I probably should have qualified it by saying it wasn't and didn't escalate to the degree that the Hayes incident did, but can I help it if when I saw it my thought process flashed back to the Hayes incident? I remember seeing the Hayes wackiness when it happened.

Nothing bizarre about that. I do agree it wasn't anywhere near as crazy. Thankfully.

It's not you or others opinions on here I worry about... It's people that read here with deep bottles of ink...

Funny. I was in Canada and could not see the game. I was on the board for the first few minutes, and then I was able to listen while driving to a friends house on my sons XM radio in the car. I am not sure if I read about it in the chat room, or heard it on the radio. I think it was on the radio. My reaction was surprised that he even yelled at Trevor. I feel like Trevor has been the golden guy. And while he hustles, and has tremendous defensive effort, we all know that he has not had the golden 3 shot in a long long time. So it always bothered me that Trevor had a much longer leash than the other players seem to have. Maybe this had been building under the surface for a while. The radio only said something about JB being angry and getting into Trevor's face. The announcers said nothing about any physicality.
I have to say I have seen other coaches do this, and then the players respond really well like Trevor did. I didn't see it, so do not know the extend of the physical behavior. I have to assume it was not much or we certainly would have heard much more about it by now.

Didn't impact Cooney at all. Jb was pissed at them both. Cooney just happened to be closer. He chewed them both out in the bench. May even have used Cooney as the example. Cooney and Joseph pinched and the guy still slithered through them.

Do the sports writers not watch the games and truly rely on us for news? Should I copyright my craft? Is ESPN waiting in the wings to run a story a day after the PS, because they also aren't privy to what happened in plain sight? I know our standards for media have dropped much like the standards of healthcare and education, but these type of stories are one thing the media seems pretty good at being on top of. If I were a betting person, judging from what I've read here, I wouldn't bet on this making TMZ or anything.

It actually would have been nice if one of the reporters asked about it in the presser, but they were more concerned with asking JB if he was disappointed, which I think is what led to him saying he already answered that 8 times before the guy could finish his question.

If someone would be kind enough to approximate when in the game it was, I could go back and have another look.

It was at the first TV timeout (under 16). As to copyright, hop on board the train.

When I saw it during the game I commented to my wife and since we record the games we rewound the DVR and watched it multiple times. JB was leering at Trevor as he approached and barked something to him and then pushed Trevor from behind immediately after Trevor had passed him on his way to the bench and the TO huddle.

This season or this particular group of players may be frustrating for JB but in my opinion it is NEVER OK for a coach to put a hand on a player out of frustration or any reason for that matter. Simply put, it was wrong. I think he is an amazing coach and has tremendous accomplishments but there are times when JB's actions, words and deeds are inappropriate. The personal nature of some of JB's comments about players seems out of place as well. Some can counter that it's a motivational technique but a team that apparently has several players who are struggling with confidence wouldn't seem to benefit from that type of "motivational" approach.

It seems that enough people here noticed the incident and seemed somewhat troubled by it. When a game is televised to countless numbers of viewers watching the game one can only guess how many people saw the incident and raised an eyebrow to it as well. I hope for JB's sake he can get his emotions in check and he won't repeat anything which can be construed as inappropriate and reflect negatively on himself and by association, the team. I don't care how many games he has won or how long he's been here, that push of Trevor was not OK.

I'm not prepared to render judgment on JB at the moment, but after rewatching it a few times, I at first wondered If I was watching the wrong thing. One possession on offense or defense often sees more contact than that. We're a bit backward as a society, and go apes**t over something like that, yet can somehow turn a blind eye toward all of the mental/emotional abuse some coaches dish out to players. I'd wager most folks here would have had 1 or more inner pains that they'd gladly trade for that little shove/tap(that nearly turned into a clutch).

Much like our ingestion habits, folks tend to seek a feeling a superiority over the things they draw the line on. When folks commit suicide or have a breakdown, I'd imagine physical abuse isn't the leading cause or close. It seems it's easier for folks to cast these judgments as long as it's something they don't do, yet they'll ignore worse faults in a person or group doing something worse if their hands are dirty as well. At a time when society has the means to evolve, it looks more like we're devolving due to conditioning.

It caught my attention when it happened and I figured the media would turn it into a bigger story considering the current climate to do that for pretty much everything these days. Put me in the camp as I didn't think it was that big of a deal but I would prefer JB avoid doing that in the future just to avoid anything blowing up.

For crying out loud, he made it through Paul Harris and Louie McCroskey without doing anything like that so I think he should be able to do it now.

The looks Paul and Jimmy used to give each other! That was entertainment.

Syracuse.com and Espn Radio definately monitor us... I have no doubt about that.
