Coach Search Options after Autry

A worst-case scenario, but if we don't make the ACC Tournament, kiss the recruits and most of the current roster goodbye. At that point, there is no reason to prolong the misery for a third year. Red would be in an impossible position if he was retained for another season under those circumstances.

Georgetown is terrible. Cooley is about on par with Red after two years.

St. John’s got Pitino because he wants to settle Down in NY as he ages.

Georgetown in 9-2, and they got that PG from Harvard, Mack, who was among the top guards we were looking at in the portal, and we wound up with Jaquan as the consolation prize. Epps is also a pretty good player. Sorber is very good, and he's not their only big. I would like to be that terrible right now.

I don’t know but they’re not offering modified season ticket packages because they were sold out. I don’t think they got anywhere near the renewals they expected this season with the new seats etc.

Well, since the university is milking the athletics programs and not making a proper amount of reinvestment in this cash cow, the university is to blame.

Going to be a tough couple years at the Dome for hoops, if we don't replace or revamp the coaching staff in the offseason.

Fran should trigger good ticket sales for football, but next year is a rough, rough schedule.

This should be the guy.
That was quick. I’m not saying this guy isn’t it. From what I can tell he has 1 P5 win and that was Louisville last year. 4-8 in their noncon last year to start and the rest was beating up the 1 bid sunbelt. They look better this year but still this guy is 37. Even Fran Brown who’s real young has 5 years on him.

You guys sure you don’t want to shop around a little ha. Or was the 5 mins of internet research this morning enough.

I completely get where you are coming from, but this is the first guy I've read about any time the "who would come here to coach" topic comes up on here that looks like a promising option. He also beat a good Memphis team already this year. Better than any win we have. I feel like this could be a do-over for not going after Oats.

Yea agreed. It’s actually crazy that last year we actually beat tourney teams. UNC and NC state twice. I think there were some others. This year not likely but who knows.

How much is SU losing in tickets sales and concessions because of poor basketball attendance? It has to be between $5-$10m a year at this point.
Hard to say. Others in the know are saying we have the money, but are unwilling to spend it on both sports. Everyone knows football is the biggest generator of revenue. Maybe the plan is to bolster the football program to get it in a consistent good spot? I can somewhat understand that logic. If football turns into a perennial top 25 program, there will be more revenue for all sports. Problem is we are sacrificing the basketball program at this very moment. I believe the athletic department's standing hinges on the next 5 years of football success.

You seem to be under the false impression that this discussion stems from yesterday's loss.

This is really what I’m hoping. The whole ship was leaking across all our major programs. Fix one leak at a time. Clearly we’re not dealing with geniuses on the hill running things or we wouldn’t be here so maybe that’s the best we can do.

If we don’t make the ACC tourney, which is my expectation anyways, but if that happens he should be fired as soon as the season ends. That SHOULD NOT be acceptable to anyone.

I assume, since you are posting here, that you are perfectly capable of finding this information.

It seems that the biggest difference in perspective here between you and other posters is this: many of us realize that the recruiting class is toast if we crater. You seem to think it's set in stone as long as Red returns. It isn't. Even if they somehow come aboard, they aren't going to stick around and be subjected to odd rotations where the most talented players sit. What happened with Freeman yesterday was almost too stupid to even believe, and those things add up. The solid recruiting is going to become a lot more difficult as word of the incompetence spreads among the top players.

None of the recruits are indispensible, even Kiyan. If you want them on campus to lay the foundation for the program's resurrection, then we need to hire someone worthy of them (and can replace them).
I mean these recruits aren’t stupid either. It’s not like Autry sold them the promise of a final 4.

Kiyan and Sadiq picked Cuse knowing that we suck and haven’t been to the tourney in recent history and haven’t been even close to the program we were. They still signed because they want a challenge and want a rebuild. If they wanted guaranteed tourney appearances they could look elsewhere.

This year all the same stuff is true. Still not a tourney team and still not good. Sure they can jump ship if they really want to but they signed just a month ago knowing that we had only beat Lemoyne by 2.

He was 9-23 last year and their best win is against us. They won’t make the tournament.

My biggest fear is say Red gets the 3rd year like everyone wants? Then lets say he sneaks into the tournament because of talent then what? We get him for another 5 years? What is the end game? I can tell he can't coach at this level so this feels a whole lot like a Dino situation.
this is the problem...like a tom crean scenario...totally incapable of becoming truly elite...but good enough to get good enough recruits to be decent and underacheive from there...but doing just well enough that he keeps the job...

its what i think will actually happen, unfortunately

Judgments aren't made from one game. The systemic issues that have become clear this season put everything in jeopardy. Last season was supposed to be a bust, and things have gone backwards from there. Coaching and talent management are key to keeping talent on the roster and in the pipeline. Being okay with a "rebuild" (not really a thing anymore in the portal era) is universes apart from being okay with sitting on the bench during the rebuild, which is going to be a big possibility based on the management of Freeman.

When you have the biggest on campus arena in the country, which annually generates in the top 2 or 3 in revenues in all of college basketball, you don't just sacrifice that money.

We might only have 2/3 of the capacity for basketball as for football, but we play 20 or so home games, versus only 6 or 7 for football. The TV revenue is tilted to football, but game day revenue favors hoops, just because of 3 times as many home dates. Even if football draws 40K and hoops 20K on average, you have an extra 150K fan visits more per year for hoops.

I really look at coaching sometimes thru the intangibles and mental aspects… I know Gmac is young and probably not completely ready but from the little I’ve seen at Siena he has “it” in coaching that I don’t think Red has … Id hate to miss that boat on Gmac … What I mean is Gmac as we know is an ultra competitive person and from watching his games at Siena I see that in his coaching .. He gets fiery and isn’t going to lose .. He will exhaust all avenues to try to win even when his team is less talented .. They play hard and Gerry looks locked in in bench .. Red when they show him on camera looks overwhelmed and lost with answers .. That body language matters .. if I see it the players surely do ..JB was extremely competitive and that’s how he made Cuse a consistent power until he lost a step of that .. Gmac has that fire and watching games so far seems to handle the in game coaching … Early feel right now tells me he’s is gonna be a star as a coach .. In comparison to Melo and Kyian .. is Kyian a program changer with talent ,, prob not but he is Melos son and has a relationship to winning a championship for us .. We couldn’t lose that … Gmac has the same for the history of Syracuse .. He as a freshmen when he could have been too green, helped carry us to a National title in 2003 then held the team Together when Melo left .. he wouldn’t lose
I wish GMac all the success in his coaching career, but he should not be the next head coach at Syracuse. It would be more of the same. Program needs a fresh start completely disassociated from JB.

No one outside of the SEC and some Big 10 schools are getting a big name. That goes for UNC too. Heck UK had to settle on their 4th or 5th choice this offseason. That said Langel probably would have us with a lot better of a record with the same talent we have this year.
We could get a successful P5 coach. But it would have to be someone looking for a change of scenery or dealing with a discontented fanbase, like Shaka leaving Texas for Marquette, Barnes going to Tennessee after he was let go from Texas, or Dixon bolting Pitt for TCU after the Pitt fan base starting grumbling about him. All have had good to great success at their new schools.

Luke Murray would also be a fantastic choice, if you want to go the "upside" route.
I think Luke Murray has a high ceiling. But he hasn’t been a head coach before so it is somewhat of a risk.

What about a guy like Chris Jans at Mississippi State...He started as a JC guy worked his way up, and he won 79 percent of his games at New Mexico State...He's only at a 69 percent winning clip at MSU...I would have said Mizzou's Dennis Gates before last year when he went 0-18 in the SEC...Like the fact that Davis didn't see action in two of those X-gving tourney games is when I knew Red had no idea what he was doing...
