Coach Search Options after Autry

With our luck only stiffs will be in the portal this year😆
The portal will be loaded like it has always been. The money growing exponentially will guarantee that trend continues until it is completely unsustainable for even the SEC or Big10, or we get a CBA.

I feel like once again I have to release this disclosure. I am not advocating for
Hopkins. Nor is anyone else that I see giving information. But there seems to
be anger at us. Like we are making a decision here. And while I was told I might
hear more later, nothing has been finally decided yet.
Not anger. Frustration. We all appreciate your info, just hate that it seems to confirm our worst fears abouthow the program is being run (or misrun).

I agree with that, Especially since it appears that Melo is till out trying to get more money.
The big question is are there players going to be in the portal worthy of this kind of money? If they’re all like Freeman, good luck with that. I hope whoever the next coach is they have European contacts. Those kids come in ready to play.

It's easy to say that you want BH over Hop and his $30 million NIL. Coaching matters.

But would you still take BH over Hop if I guaranteed you that Syracuse had a top 10 roster next year (and the year after) provided by Melo's funding?
Coaching matters and Hodgson can fundraise enough to take a big chunk out of that. I have no faith Hopkins can coach and throwing NIL at rosters hasn't produced incredible results (just look at Kentucky).

I would hope they are working the back channels and actually sharing with the school what the roster would look like instead of just sitting and waiting for the portal to open with this kind of money.

If there are new big $$ players like SU making it clear they can pay you will have kids jumping in the portal to take advantage.

As someone who thinks that the support of Melo (who is nearly universally beloved) is important to the relevancy of our program, this possible turn of events is difficult to process. If Hop is hired and he gets a contract that requires strong results, maybe it would be worth it with the type of money that is being discussed. But It is a HUGE gamble. If it didn't work, it would be embarrassing for all involved.

I would have to look but I think they have beaten 5 or 6 teams over 500.
But, of course, the teams in their league all have the same deficiency in talent so it makes sense the bigger conference teams carve them up.
For me, what is important is what they do with the players they have.
Can they get them to overachieve or underachieve?
Siena is second in their league so seems to me he is doing ok.
Gerry gets his guys to play tough, never surrender, put it all on the line ball.
Red gets his guys to play creampuff soft, roll over, lets think about the catering food after the game ball.

I suspect that Hop is worlds better than Red, not sure how he would compare to Gerry.
But again Hop cant be all that bad if he won 2 coaches of the year in Washington.
They dont give those things out as door prizes.
You have to earn it.

I'm going to break this down, beacuse I think you are right. But let's see. Here are the teams Siena has beaten this year, with their 2025-2026 record to date:

Bryant 8-19
Brown 9-15
Albany 10-18
Holy Cross 10-19
Longwood 15-15
American 16-13
Maine 7-21
Niagara 7-21 -beat them twice
Canisus 9-20 -beat them twice
Rider 4-23
Mt. Saint Mary's 14-15
Manhattan 12-17
Fairfield 18-11
Marist 18-10 -beat them twice
Iona - 16-13
St Peter's 15-11

I stand corrected about it only being one team. Still...

I trust Melo and JB in that I believe they have the best interest of the program at heart. I don’t trust other big donors with no connection to basketball inserting themselves into basketball affairs for the first time. If the administration opts to go with Hopper, backed by a large coalition of donors and stakeholders, then let’s ride!!!!’ Hop 2027!!!!!

If you can somewhat justify your “NIL Money”, you can use less of the revenue share that can go to women’s hoops or football. This also makes the University take a different look at things.

True and the men's basketball brand is so huge, it should be able to operate independently.

This may be what the kids call a hot take, but let’s remember Hop did win the PAC 12. It may not be the American or whatever conference Arkansas St is in but I trust that with the right resources, Hopper can compete.
To plays devils advocate it was a down year in the league. UCLA Arizona USC all around .500 records for the year

Hey, one out of seven tries ain’t bad. Good grief. The PAC 12 was also awful and he made a total of one tourney.
