Coach Search Options after Autry

Finally caught up after 3 hours. What a ride!

Wow, what a monumentally horrible decision the administration is preparing to step into. This is going to fail spectacularly. If Hop was "surprised" at the backlash when he went 4-5 as JAB's caretaker in 2015-16, watch what happens if they struggle in Vegas again.

I can envision a guy like Otzelberger or Hoiberg reaching out to Melo and saying he heard they had $30 million (and growing) war chest and would be tempted to jump ship. "Sorry, that's only for my boy, Hop. Good luck in Ames/Lincoln next year!"

I will say this, however. The SUAD and BOT are full of people whose words are their bonds. They said Hop was the the Coach In "Waiting". Now it looks like they are gonna make good on that promise.
Btw, would it be a bad thing if coaches try to pitch themselves to be the guy Melo gives the treasure chest too if they get wind of it. Though they probably already have an idea because the portal back channel game is likely well underway.

I'm guessing this will be Hopkins sales pitch:

1) You know and like me.

2) Melo will fund NIL at a top national level. Basically unlimited funds! We will offer the most money to any high school or transfer portal player that I want. I will get the top transfers and top high school talent.

3) Kiyan will stay at Syracuse and I can make him really good.

4) I've learned a lot working in the NBA and all these players want to be told how to make it to the NBA.

5) I will have Melo's funding to buy the best coaching staff and scouting possible to help me.

6) I will take a low salary.

7) My plan will cost 2-3 times less than hiring an upcoming mid major coach and hoping he works out.

8) Currently Syracuse is a mess and has no AD or Chancellor. I don't care who you hire & will take job now.

BTW - I still really want BH over Hop but having unlimited basketball funding for a few years is tempting. It would be funny if Syracuse buying a basketball title forced NCAA NIL changes.
Nevermind that I had highly rated classes at UW and could not win in an inferior conference

I think the solution for our program is being on probation again. Even the NCAA has deemed us irrelevant

The old man sure knew how to keep us relevant. A nice Italian dinner could solve some issues for SU Running Rebels

So we could say he looks the part? Good Lord!
It just makes sense and it’s professional. Old school in appearance, but modern in operation is how I envision Syracuse basketball best path moving forward.

It sounds like a donor bidding war, whoever has the most resources wins. With the Melo camp figure for Hopkins for as far as I’m concerned would sky rocket Syracuse to the top 5 nationally, perhaps even number 1 for the immediate future when it comes to roster spending.
To be fair the only place it sounds like a donor bidding was is in this thread.

So at the end of the day, who is making the actual hire? What is this persons knowledge of actual basketball coaching styles (play designs, game management) Why do I feel like that person has less knowledge than 90% of the board here?

Like they say in the nfl (get football people to make the decisions) who are these people at su?

To me it seems like they lack that knowledge to put it kindly
Well thats obvious based on the decision 3 years ago when our program was declining, Uconn was recovering, St Johns was courting Pitino and we hired an assistant who was elevated right around the start of the decline.

... He was a failure at a worse school, worse job, and worse conference but somehow has a chance to fall backwards into a better school, job and conference simply because our blood lust for nepotism and competence. Coaches, players, any one can improve at anything but you don’t do that with almost instant gratification, it’s earned. You have to grind your way back. Nowhere in any world has Hop grinded his way back to earning this job. Of course there’s cases that go against the grain(actually based on that AI rundown it may not be at this level of college ball lol) but majority of the time if they failed, they’re gone fail again.

Agree with everything you wrote except what's bolded...

Quite frankly, if Hop's hired, it's proof-positive we're not a better school or job for basketball anymore... Not in the slightest.

We'd simply be a dysfunctional mess who's decision makers are stuck in reverse and the nostalgia of yesteryear, with a focus on the past and lacking any real strategic, modern vision for the program ...And our decisions guided by that approach are downright terrible.

It would be a sobering reality (instead of siezing a golden opportunity to embrace strategic, needed change.)

.

this isn’t the win you think it is when the entire universe knows that Romar is one of the worst power 6 coaches in recent history. Romar brought in big time talent, and couldn’t do a damn thing(still went to 6 tournaments in 15 years, compared to Hopkins 1 in 7!).Hopkins brought in big time talent, and also some existing big time talent, and outside of one year in the worst pac 12 in its history, did absolutely nothing but fail just like Romar.

and this reply proves my exact point I’ve been making for weeks about multiple posters people close to the situation. Completely ignorant and clueless to real world of college basketball.
Top post is in response to a statement that Hop’s success was because he had Romar’s players. He supplemented a 9-23 team with four freshmen and led them to a 21 and 27 win season. Don’t understand the attempt to belittle that.

Second post just pointing out facts. Hodgson may well be the perfect coach for this situation and I will support him 💯 if he is the pick, but it’s not like he is knocking off highly ranked teams every night. He has something to prove at this level. Personally I like his style of play and think he can be reasonably successful but would not consider hiring him to be a no brainer or consider the coaching search to be a failure if he is not the hire.

Wow are you off on this one. He wasn't claiming he had insight. He was just endorsing him because of familiarity with the program which he prioritizes. But to say he's the least plugged in? I'd delete your post.
I am most certainly not off. Im not using this as a singular instance. I don't think its debatable frankly, of the people who are around the ACC most in media, he is the most unplugged. He gives mark packer a run for his money.
