Coach Search Options after Autry

How about we hire a coach where you don't have to do a bunch of hypotheticals in order to convince yourself that he *could* be good. I mean JFC this really isn't that difficult.

Hodgson wins. Hire the guy who wins.
I just listened to Paulie and Steve’s show from yesterday, and you should have heard the inane justifications they were making for Hop. Steve was the worst of the two. They were all, yeah, he has a poor record but he has intangibles that should count. I wish they would do some deeper research about Hop’s tenure at Washington. It was bad. Very bad. We cannot go with another failed alum after the Red debacle. I would rather hire a Kyle Smith type, a very good proven coach who isn’t a big name, than hire Hop.

Melo has to have received feedback from several (dozens?) NBA GMs, scouts, etc… regarding Kiyan’s pro prospects.

1. We all know that they are saying he needs to get stronger, quicker, tougher, etc…

2. We all know that they said he needs reps, playing time, etc… to improve.

3. It’s also likely that they told him the current coaching staff is doing Kiyan no favors by not properly utilizing the team personnel and having an undefined offensive philosophy.

What I don’t get is how he takes that info and decides Hop is the one to bring that all together.

Anybody can help with part 1. Much of the growth will happen naturally with time and maturation. Hop can certainly help with part 2, assuming he’s beholden to Melo’s power and influence. But part 3 is still lacking from what we saw at UW.

Perhaps the calculus is that without #2 (playing time), #3 (a structured offense that can foster development) is meaningless.

I have to tell you, you are doing a first rate troll job. I honestly don't know if you are serious or not.
I appreciate all you share, Dasher. I was first on team outside p4 hire (Cronin, Chris Mack even); then 3-year bridge guy (Huggy, Pearl); and am now Team Hop based on the support of Melo and his group of stakeholders. Gerry and Bryan the Shark Hodgson might be fine coaches with stratospheric careers in the future, but the time isn’t right for the young pups. Seriously on board with Melo and the Hopkins train. No trolling. And again, appreciate all you have shared.

I want to make this clear: I don’t want Mike Hopkins as the next coach, and I’m all in on BH. However, I do have a question for the insiders on here: in terms of the $30 million+ supposedly coming with Hopkins if he’s hired as HC, how much of that would purely go towards roster construction?

We need to keep Carmelo and Kiyan and get Hodgson.

This is the way...

Maybe dasher richmondcuse03 or Bulldog04 knows have they tried to get a conversation between Hodgson and Melo to happen yet?

Or are things way too far and the line is drawn in the sand? I can't imagine Melo watching tape of Hodgson teams playing and not liking the wide open play style and freedom on offense.

I don't know for sure but I would think it would be the majority

That show is insufferable. I hate them both for different reasons.

If SU gets $30+ million up front for three years you don’t stop fundraising for three years. The money should’t dry up and who knows what three years looks like down the road. All Kiyan’s hs coaches said Melo did not interfere and was great to deal with. People saying there must be guarantees for Kiyan are only speculating. I don’t know what the hiring process is going to look like, but I would guess everyone wants to win. I think we should all chill a little and sees what happens. Obviously, Hop had inconsistent results, but winning 27 games in one year isn’t nothing. Anyone we hire is a crapshoot. There are no guarantees. Hop and Hogsden both cause me some concerns. If we have this kind of potential money it would open the door to a lot of coaches.

I think you might be focusing on the wrong question. A better question might be: could Hodgson beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia, Louisville teams once he's implemented his system, and gotten system fits, as a long-term program transformation.

Not worried so much about performance being optimized in year 1. But the footprint needs to be in place, to set the table for future sucess.

Faith without evidence is unnecessary here -- because he's shown his ability to elevate teams not once, but twice, in short order.
I wish people in power on the Hill would listen to you. You called this out three years ago when JB’s tenure was coming to an end—and even in the years before that—that an outside hire was needed, that we needed to go outside the program and get the best person for the job that we can possibly land.

That wouldn't be their reason though. Their reason, if I can speak for the BOT, would be that the answer is a boatload of Nil and he can do that. And he can do that without having us have to pay 2.6 million on a buyout. I have to do a disclaimer now that this isn't my thoughts but what I am thinking the BOT would say.
Correct, no matter what is said, that is coming with playing time and being featured attached no way it is not.

My thing is if Melo and the alumni really want what is best for Syracuse basketball, take the 30 million and get the best coaching staff on the market. That is how you would really make long term impact for Syracuse basketball and your son's NBA future. For 30 million, they can use that money to pull successful P4 coaches away so do that instead.
That’s true, but coaches leave all the time. Picture this a big time investment is made on a quality coach. He’s successful, Kentucky swoops in and grabs him after 1 year. Bake 0. Sh$t happens
I wish Kiyan went to USC. None of this would have happened. The irony is he will be the first one to get booed next year if this is a disaster.
Skipped ahead 30+ pages since last night. Can't keep up.

The one thing I loved about this thread is that it shows the passion we all have for Syracuse basketball, and that we all really do care who the next coach is.
To bat the BOT doesn’t!!!

I was thinking along on the same lines. Would it be improper for BH to reach out to Melo? Probably yes, Red still has the job. I would have to think if BH gets the job, his first call would be to melo and try to get those assets delivered to him. Melo couldn't do that now because that would undercut Hopkins. But it just seems that and I might be wrong here, but it seems to me that Hop and Bh are minor players in this game. The real game is between the Lally's and Melo.

Hodgson is in the middle of the season for another team that he coaches. We gotta use some common sense here folks about this whole process

Melo is going to support everyone but he’s going to support Hop more

Since we’re all having fun with hypotheticals.

Would the bot decisionmakers have picked 39 year old unproven Fran Brown 2 years ago if he was interviewing against the equivalent of a Mike Hopkins type hire with the same larger bankroll and former player support?

My gut tells me that Fran Brown would’ve never set foot in the dome and the Mike Hopkins type football HC would’ve been hired before Babers had a chance to pack up his office.
What are you even talking about? We don’t have a Mike Hopkins like candidate because we would’ve never hired a coach with a losing overall HC record. Also, we don’t even know if Fran is a good hire yet

If Hop is the coach they better at least keep Alex Kline. I don’t trust Hops judge for talent either. Too defensive focused.
Alex didn’t exactly hit it out of the park this year

I think he can do more than one thing at a time. He wants this job badly. My issue would be the appearance of it more than if he has the time for it.

The problem with Hop is his basketball philosophy stinks.

With 30 million the expectations should be we go 27-4 next season and be a top 3 seed. Ask UK what spending that money got them this year. They’re miserable.
