Coach Search Options after Autry

If you want the guy who has proven success, hands down it's Chris Mack. He's been to nine NCAA tournaments. One Elite Eight and three Sweet Sixteens and overall NCAAT record of 11-9. I'm surprised more people haven't been on his bandwagon.
It was mentioned elsewhere that Mack was approached, but did something to piss off SU. Someone I know implying that Mack was involved was the origin of the optimism I had expressed before the current poo tornado touched down.

I can understood that. However I'm pretty close to the NIL picture and it's crazy how much it matters. That and a great personality will attract talent. If the money is close I'm all for the guy from Florida. If not I'll take the talent. I'll give you that he is probably the better coach but I'll take Hop and better talent as the best bet to get Syracuse back in the Dance.
If Syracuse is spending more than 15 million on its roster or for that matter are spending top 10 nationally on its roster, it would be a disappointment to not be ranked throughout the year and make the Elite 8. This is a splash investment. There is no building up to big time. If Syracuse went with an outsider that started with top 40 resources, I would be good with a methodical build up.

I know, Syracuse Football wasn’t attracting a guy like Hodgson if the roles were reversed.
I know it, the things I see on this board are so illogical sometimes. And people wonder why this university has fallen off a cliff.

First. Football has 85 scholarship players. Basketball has 13. Let’s start with that.

Football also has tiers of coaches. Example being HC, coordinators, position coaches, quality control, analysts, etc. Basketball has a coach and 3-4 assistants. It’s a completely different system of operations. When you have a much larger group of people to control and keep on the same page, a motivator becomes more of a priority from the top person.

In football, it is extremely common for coordinators to call games both defensively and offensively. In basketball, game side decisions are 95% of the time made by a head coach.

We’ve dealt with years of pain with Autry. For the love of god, do not put another stupid game manager on the sidelines if you want even a hint of national relevancy again.

Last point. Todd Golden (the most recent national championship winning head coach) had zero experience coaching at the power five level. Hodgson is so painfully obvious as the next person here. He fits the mold.

The Hopkins talk (and backing) completely blows my mind.

If the coach you are hiring comes with an expectation that he needs to hire great assistants because he’s not good with X’s and O’s, he’s absolutely not the right guy.
Hurley has been ok and he lets Murray plan and run the offense. His main attribute is intensity

i love devo as much as the next person. but people ask why hasn't hop gotten other job offers (fair question). why hasn't devo? the year he was here his title was training or something. he was at detroit mercy for a year and he was some special asst to the hc. all this time, why isn't he an asst coach someplace?

Devo left UDM because he wanted to move back to Syracuse to be close to his daughter.

Maybe he didn’t want to be, I don’t know the reason. I don’t know if anyone does. He’s doing a great job as a color commentator as of now.

The best bet to get Syracuse back into the dance is a coach with competent offensive / defensive systems and a proven track record of success, not an unsustainable expectation around having to spend at the top of the NIL food chain to offset a coach's limitations.
The better coach but only if the NIL is close. If not, superior talent almost always wins. Just ask JB

I'm guessing it's a much higher paying gig too. Only so many people have the means to work as an assistant making almost no $ and hoping to move up the ladder.

Unfortunately NIL doesn't allow for a methodical build up. It's a year to year situation which makes it even more important to have talent and the money to retain and re load. Most of these kids will stay if the money is close. If not they're gone. .methodical isn't happening in today's NIL world.

Correct. Devo never even attempted to guard anyone when he played. He was undisciplined on and off the court, but he was competitive as heck. If he could bring that to this program it would be a plus. He would have to work with the guards. We need some new blood and new ideas at SU. Definitely bring in someone with experience working with bigs and front court players.

Uh, Kentucky hoops would like a word with you.

And Rutgers from last year.
TWO top-5 draft picks got them a losing record.

It’s almost as if you need coaching to maximize talent or something?

Meanwhile - there are stories of coaches out-coaching their talent to overachieve.

Like Hodgson. And Schertz.

Meanwhile - Hop hasn’t been able to coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

Ahh yes Mike Hopkins and Dan Hurley. Very similar people.
Point is not that they are alike, point is most great college coaches are at least in part, tremendous jerks. Coach K, Hurley, Knight, Wade, Self, Calhoun, Thompson, even our own JAB. Don't get me wrong, all could be funny and charming, well maybe not Thompson, he was just an A Hole. But during games these guys were practically demonic.

yes but the statement was he was a special aast to the hc, not an asst there or anywhere.

No matter who the coach is next year, selecting the right kind of “winning” players from the portal is important. You have to get talented players, but also need guys who will go through a wall to win. Kentucky went out and payed big bucks for players, but they didn’t assemble a winning roster. Getting the right players is essential. Bottom line is if you can’t shoot, don’t bring them in unless they have a unique skill area that they excel in. If a guy can’t make a free throw, you put your team at a disadvantage. We saw what that does to a team this year. Someone needs to be able to judge talent. Hop always stressed defense over shooters, that’s why he had horrible offensive teams. Roster construction might be more important than who’s standing in front of the bench.

I brought up Devo a few pages back and should clarify. I think the HC and assistants should be completely new and non-alumni.

I do think there's space in support staff/player development to utilize former players and keep that aspect connected. Devo and Triche were two guys I thought valuable in that type of role.

So quick summary we are still at

Door 1 - Hopkins with some kind of backing that is 30+ million but Lally said he hasn't heard about it (posted in some strange PDF twitter thing) and we are going to hire top-line assistants like Devo to be on the bench to cover up for the fact the Head Coach Hopkins isn't good and has no modern offensive or defensive systems

Door 2 - Hodgson who knows what kind of support he has but checks all the actual coaching boxes outside of P4 experience

Door 3 - Who knows someone else but no other names

Door 4 - Mike Tirico is on vacation in Milan
