Coach Search Options after Autry

I'll just say this... these are the exact same words used before we hired Dino Babers.

I agree with the sentiment, but let's make sure there is substance behind the marketing message. FWIW BH has a similar profile to Dino before he got to Syracuse. Before you say but but BH coached at Alabama... Babers was at Baylor under Art Briles before he go to Syracuse.

Not saying BH will turn out like Dino... I think BH is much more aggressive when it comes to recruiting, but it remains to be seen whether he can build a sustainable program. Dino never built a program before Syracuse and we found out he probably couldn't build one period while he was here. Again BH seems young enough and passionate enough that he will build something, but he will definitely be learning on the job.

Grandpa is watching this comment.

Higher upside than Hopkins.

There is one thing I don’t understand (well, according to my wife there’s a lot more than one). I can understand (while completely disagreeing with) Lally’s position. It’s all his money, as I understand it, he has no immediate connection with the team, and if SU struggles it’s really no skin off his nose. But Melo I have one major problem with. In addition to being (with JB) essentially the best known face of SUBB, he’s got a kid on the team. I can’t imagine telling Kiyan he has access to enough money to provide a strong roster, but won’t do it unless we hire his friend. That’s basically saying I love ya kid, but I love Hop more. What happens when top guys consider SU but go somewhere else for more $. Gonna make for some interesting conversations around the old dinner table. And how will Kiyan’s teammates feel about his father withholding resources?

Conversely if this is all about whose name is in bigger print on a building, why don’t they just whip ‘em out, lay ‘em on the table, and move on to what’s best for SU.

Melo called me last night and told me he will give me 50 mil a year for nil to coach the team. My staff will be Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, Bruce pearl and Dan Mullen.
You forgot to add in perhaps the most important one: according to Melo in honor of JB giving Rick Patino his start in college basketball he is going to hire Rik for his retirement job. He wants Rick to go out in style.

Higher upside than Hopkins.
Oh for sure… sorry wasn’t advocating for Hopkins who was given the chance to build a program at a high major level and pooped the bed. My only point is there there needs to be substance behind the hype.

BH is a pretty good bet… but I want to see his “binder”.

As others said If you ever needed convincing he can both recruit and raise major NIL funds…
Add Mrs. Steve Lavin (Mary Ann Jarou) to the staff.

You have to ask yourself how would you feel if Boston College hires Hop, Kiyan transfers to BC and Hop brings in a good roster with some Melo money. Would you be jealous or angry?

Not me. I would be very curious to see how it turns out and I'm sure I would watch some BC games but I would be very happy and prefer if Syracuse got Hodgson instead.
1. IDC where Kiyan plays. He is not a difference maker. 2. NIL will follow sustained success for SU MBB. 3. BC is incapable of sustained BB success, particularly if they hire Hopkins.

How did they hear about the 30M but lally has no idea? Someone is lying. Those are mutually exclusive. If it’s Lally in the end who was the liar then I’ll eat crow and apologize but until then I’m going to trust the horses mouth directly over burner accounts on a public fan forum that could enjoy riling up the fanbase
I am calling BS on the $30M being real. Not that it wasn’t launched as a trial balloon.

There's ways to handle that as part of the negotiation legally if the 30 mil promise is legit... E.g. An escrow clearing account tied legally to the deal to prove ALL promised money is actually there upfront and real (for example) and tied to be released to the school under contract financial covenants, etc.

However, I'm with you on that... more probable that said "30 mil bag" is likely just a marketing ploy to back Hop with no real way to verify funds availability upfront (and whatever is ACTUALLY provided in the bag after he gets the gig will be no where near $30 mil) is my guess... And we'd never know anyways (the sort of thing private SU is not going to be transparent about.)

The 30 mil bag promise is a needed big "sweetener" to justify Hop as a legit candidate, since his CV is pretty terrible now, no other serious P4 school would hire him, and the justification is bunk otherwise without the big bag.

I may be very be wrong about that, but that's just my gut take...

Pete Thamel just said on ESPN College Gameday that it’s not expected to be a good market for new coaches this offseason. He predicts there will be less than the 15 open jobs (Power 4 I assume) there was last year and no Blue-blood job openings (ouch).

No mention of Syracuse or any other potential openings.
