Coach Search Options after Autry

will be wild if it is hodgson or scherz. That means the board has essentially known the candidate for months

on the flip side for football... fran came out of nowhere

Our pecking order nationally in basketball is a lot different than football. Basketball, we don't have to settle and would be able to get one of the hot names on the coaching market. Whereas in football, we are opposite and have to roll the dice and think outside of the box for our coaching hire.

I’m seriously concerned that Gmac will get a serious look just because he made the tournament. Unbelievable the amount of national attention he has gotten for winning a tournament.

Good for Gerry, but we need to go in the direction of one of the three candidates you have listed and happen to be 3 of my top candidates.
I don’t see it as in unbelievable that he’s getting all this attention. He’s was a college basketball star and people remember him. Now he has taken Siena to the big dance in just two years. It’s a good story. He may parlay it into an A10 job.

Why? Is it his father or do you dislike Danny Hurley adnd so do not want his top assistant?

Because of Bill, Luke Murray as HC is going to get a lot of media attention for a Major conference team.
Has nothing to do with Bill Murray. Luke has established himself as a high quality assistant and basketball tactician.

The hire should be based on merit and not cult of personality.

I gotta say I don’t love this. Indiana had already identified their guy Darian Devries by this point last year and was well down the track with him. Same with Iowa and Ben McCollum. If they’re truly considering anyone but Hodgson or Schertz, the powers that be are a mess and should all be replaced. I hope Haynie prefers Hodgson and will put his fingers on the scale. And I hope these are just names being floated for optics to show they’re casting a wide net and doing due diligence. I wonder if insiders can confirm that?

They can’t really openly say they have their guy on the record. Especially if that guy has his team still playing.

I am not advocating to hire Gerry and agree he probably needs another jump, but I can see why people are talking about it and his popularity as a player at Syracuse is undeniable. I do think if he continues to ascend in 3-4 years he might not be available, but things happen.
Who cares if he’s not available in a few years? We’ll hopefully be a power again under Hodgson, and we’ll all love our coach, and won’t need Gmac to fix this.

Hearing the new coach will be this guy:

UGHH!.. This board has the absolute laziest takes on offense… It’s the sheep thing where you hear someone say it and it’s gotta be correct but have no idea what your seeing

Please I beg you to go back and really watch the Siena games , watch the Fairfield one .. Gerry made some great set calls with flare action with post diving and very good secondary break action …

People, good high level college basketball coaches scout sets and offense . if they any good they take away stuff … Sets don’t always work and with a 30 sec clock you have to have guys make plays .. Just the deal.
Gerry runs a lot of offense and the ball moves until late shot clock when guys gotta make a play …

JB had his last 10 yrs years mixed in with top 50 offense teams so there’s that .. Red teams were not good offensley for a few reasons .. Red didn’t have adjustments or other options to sets .. Players couldn’t execute and third they didn’t go hard enough .. Cuts were slow and screens were Lazy

Offense needs execution, players that can create/ have skill and shot makers .. plus they need to go hard and have a purpose .. Red and Cuse lacked those elements .. Gerry’s team lacks the depth of players skill but has everything else
It’s not a lazy take. Gmac was on the bench for Red’s first year. And there was lots of stagnation and lack of movement and screening despite having some really good players. I’m know he runs better sets at Siena than Red. But Hodgson has an actual modern offensive vision backup up by analytics and proven success at multiple stops including as a head coach and as Oats’ right hand man at Bama. Hodge also has a proven track record of landing top players from high school and the portal. Gerry hasn’t shown that yet.

Great post, probably the best I have read in this entire thread.

I think those could be the two that I would most want to interview, for any job in the ACC.

The Syracuse job no longer has the same status it did in, say, 2018. Danny Hurley has made certain that UConn is seen nationally as THE top program in the entire northeast. And so both Hodgson and Schertz might wait on a BT or SEC job. So Syracuse should also pursue interviews with both Murray, top assistant for Hurley, and McNamara, who unlike Autry when hired now has HC experience including winning the conference tournament and getting to the NCAA.

Who is to say we haven't already identified our guy and have started down the path with them?

So do you think this is just optics to show they’ve cast a wide net and are looking at a number of strong candidates? I hope so but wondering you’re opinion.

Not kidding and I won’t go round and round. If he is the boss and hired someone to do a job, you have to believe they can do the job. It’s their job not the bosses job, he has his own. Once it has been determined that the employee isn’t working out then you move on. In this case it also deals with fiscal responsibilities that make sense.

They weren't doing the job. The point here is that Wildhack promoted someone from within from a program that was in decline. the things Jake outlined should not have been lost on the AD. Autry not working out isn't hindsight many people predicted he was a BAD hire because the program was in decline. Wildhack blew it.

If Hopkins is hired stick a fork in it. DOA

Thinking out loud. I wonder if someone like Mick Cronin would be on the call list. Makes $4M. Different than going in the mid-major direction.

My opinion is that the search has already largely been done behind the scenes. There’s no doubt the school reached out to a wide range of candidates early on, but I think that phase has already happened, and the list has been narrowed significantly. At this point, it feels like they already have their short list, probably #1 target, and are likely working behind the scenes on that top target.

If you take JW’s statement at face value that they want to move quickly, it would suggest the process is much further along than simply casting a wide net. The wide net was likely cast weeks ago, and now they’re focused on closing in on the person they want.
