Coach Search Options after Autry

I will never understand why a top basketball school would hire an unproven assistant coach to be their head coach. If the Syracuse job opened up, there would be a long line of successful head coaches who would line up for the job.

Red can still turn it around, but he needs to hire one or two very experienced assistant coaches that can help him develop an offensive scheme.
Other top basketball schools have stayed in-house with success.

The alternative was not just 'letting JB go,' but also firing an entire staff of former, loyal SU players. That was an unappetizing prospect and even though i predicted the AD wouldn't do that, i understood how difficult and 'ugly' that would have been.

Why like why why why ? Why is the third year a magical number? He can't coach at this level if JW cant see that then he should be on the way out with him
I don't disagree, I think sadly it's just the schools modus operandi as they say...

Haha. I was just gonna edit that!
I was a soph at SU living in BBB. When the horn sounded, I ripped like 8 shots in 20 minutes and passed out. Very healthy coping.

Awful night.

We all WANTED Red to work, obviously - if it worked that means Syracuse was in a good place.

Last year was passable for year 1. You could certainly argue the roster wasn’t the best but there’s not much he have done about it. But he got to 20 wins - we beat LSU, Oregon, GTown out of conference.11 ACC wins including UNC.

Judah understandably leaves. Q leaves for a few reasons. Taylor leaves, no big loss there. Maliq leaving was the first red flag. GMac leaves for his shot to be a HC.

Red gets the chance to hire an assistant coach and make the roster “his”. His 2 prized recruits. The portal is filled with hundreds of kids - he has a chance to build his roster. Usually you can only build through HS but not anymore, which should lead to a quicker turnaround. You can watch tapes of these kids who’ve played D1.

He whiffed on it all with the exception of Davis. The freshman seem good but he’s only playing Eli cuz JJ is hurt and he still seems unsure when he wants to play Freeman.

We’ve taken 10 steps backwards from last year and it isn’t even debatable

It looks more and more was a combo of Judah/Maliq and GMac that made last year be somewhat palatable. Once Red got his full hands on the roster and was able to hire his own assistant, it all went to

We lost an all conference player and an all conference defender.

As much as Judah drove me nuts, he would take JC to school every day if he played him.

I get Red is going to get a third year bc that’s how it works, but anyone who was awe struck by his portal recruiting and bought that JC would be good, Eddie was even in shape, etc were fooling themselves.

We have no offensive identity. We have no defensive identity. We have no set substitution patterns. And our defense may be the worst in my lifetime.

I get it, he gets a third year. Great. We have Maryland next, anyone picking them without the points?

I don't know. It's usually, and I hate to say this and I'm not saying it to hurt you but it is usually 5 years.
Just shoot me now, holy moley. If true we deserve futility for contract malpractice.
How does BOT approve that? Because JW proposed it? We have no clue how to run an athletic department.

You can make that argument all day but their programs are in much better shape than ours and they are carrying the conference.
They also get too talent based on the name on the front of their jersey. It’s like Cal’s UK teams. He didn’t do a great job coaching, he had the best talent, period

So much devil in the details on contracts. Are all the years guaranteed? Are there outs on both ends? Judging a contract by years (that we don’t even know) is silly.
If the years aren't guaranteed, it's not a contract. It's make believe.

How have we become so broke?
Was it all spent on football facilities, dome renovations?
What happened?
Good question. It's like money was diverted from the athletic dept for some other project that has nothing to do with athletics. Fortunately, you can see our rating sky rocketing in the U.S. News and World report listings.

For those saying the program is broke, how is that possible? Genuinely curious.

Self-inflicted wounds from BS internal accounting.
If Red has a 5-year deal, other heads should roll as well.

I would hope, at best, it would be 3 years guaranteed, and university options on the last 2 years.

I haven’t agreed with everything you said in this thread but this made laugh. This was good.

Cheers.

There’s also a lot more local talent from the city of Buffalo and Rochester that he could pluck, not to mention UB doesn’t have the academic standards that Colgate has. It’s not an apples to apples fair comparison
Here's an apples to apples comparison: where each of them happens to be today, and their records.

If this doesn't end in 3 months things will get ugly and it will be unfair to next year's young team.

Autry enjoyed pretty much universal support for 2 full offseasons, one regular season where we were never close to an NCAA berth, and the LeMoyne game. I think from Youngstown St to today 99% of us realized it will never work out with him.
100%. Fans are checked out already by December.

We are now stuck in purgatory.

No one is going to stick their neck out pushing Autry out. Besides the money we also risk the Anthony family bouncing off to USC. People are correct saying Kiyan and Sadiq aren’t going to save us next year on the court.

That’s the short game though. We need to play the long game. The Anthony family needs to be giving big NIL every year and putting their names on buildings in CNY for the next 25 years. If their kid isn’t here that money is going somewhere else.

We need the money people. Read all the posts from the people that know.

There is also no home run coach that seems like a natural successor. We would practically need a HOF coach to come here with his own roster and with our alumni base and donors and former players universally supporting him. We all know we need to search elsewhere but we have to let Autry implode a while longer as crazy as that sounds.

Unfortunately unless Autry decides to resign just feels like we’re stuck.

SEC program resources / state school acceptance rates vs small private liberal arts college in middle of nowhere upstate NY. Do you know what apples to apples means?

Except the US ranking is tanking.

I think you missed the sarcasm. I think all the money is going to the Chicken Nuggets in the dining hall.
Yes I did. My mistake.
