Coach Search Options after Autry

Getting Old Baby Boomer GIF by MOODMAN

I think we're overestimating how much the public cares about BH. I get that we're close to it and feel burned but they call it the coaching carousel for a reason; imagine somebody has a good year at, say, Memphis, and then chose Seton Hall over NC State? People would shrug and move on; weird stuff happens all the time on the Carousel. I didn't even remember who Lane Kiffin chose LSU over and had to Google it. It was Florida; eh, whatever.

Not to say our image isn't damaged. I just think as far as the general public goes, stuff like the photos of an empty dome against Cal, and our non-competitive record are *way* more damaging. Stuff will be forgiven pretty quick if we have 25+ win seasons that pack the dome.

And Siena was #180.

But he gets his guys to play hard, and he bleeds orange!!!
You think any other coach can get their guys to play hard in the biggest game of their career?? Well they can’t only Gerry Mcnamara can do that.

To 99% of the public, including me - that haven't been emotionally attached to him for a year - he's just a guy from a lower level school that lost in the first round.

Turns out Hopkins was also grossly unqualified to be a HC. Of the 3, it seems Gerry is the most prepared.
Gerry is doing it the right way - move from assistant to mid major HC and grow your HC chops. Jumping from an assistant to a power conference HC (and especially a blue blood) is a tough first gig.

I respect you man, but this is just a lazy take. Best offensive efficiency in the MAAC. People keep posting these numbers with no context. Look at the peer schools and conferences.

Nobody has given an answer to this question: Where should Siena be ranked given their conference level? Crazy to expect Siena to get the type of players that go to bigger programs. So why should their rating be that much higher than peer programs?

Plus, this context tells me more about GMac:
2024 Siena: 358th rated offense, 326th rated defense
2025 Siena: 246th offense, 245th defense
2026 Siena: 193rd offense, 162nd defense

So let’s add some context to these numbers.

I'm not typically a glass half-full kinda person, but I think most posters are viewing this all wrong.

Putting aside Autry's hire, we ended the season knowing we would need a new coach and luckily, there were some good young options out there.

McNamara was likely not in consideration initially, but his success this year cannot be ignored. He, of course, gets bonus points here for his time on The Hill (both as a player and coach). I think we all saw how hard his team played, and given the absolute half-azzed play and coaching we got as the season ended, that really resonates well too. We all know there are some negatives also (e.g., relatively little head coaching experience; comes from a tree of unsuccessful coaches and systems; Siena is the premier program in the MAAC [along with Iona]).

So we are either going to land a nice coach from outside of the program (my preference), or a hometown guy, with a winning track record, who seems to be on the rise.

The delta between basketball coaches is not nearly as big as many want to believe. Success is mostly a confluence of circumstances. I think whoever we get will be an improvement on where we are now, and that's what most important for the time being.
Yes I said something similar 600 pages ago lol. You need a competent coach, which we didn’t have last year, but the marginal benefits you get decrease at a certain point and the trade off of higher salary/less NIL resources no longer makes it worth it.
