Coach Search Options after Autry

When you have the biggest on campus arena in the country, which annually generates in the top 2 or 3 in revenues in all of college basketball, you don't just sacrifice that money.

We might only have 2/3 of the capacity for basketball as for football, but we play 20 or so home games, versus only 6 or 7 for football. The TV revenue is tilted to football, but game day revenue favors hoops, just because of 3 times as many home dates. Even if football draws 40K and hoops 20K on average, you have an extra 150K fan visits more per year for hoops.

I am not saying I agree with the direction the AD is going, I am simply trying to hypothesize what the AD's thinking here.

He’s off to a slow start at Gtown for sure but I wouldn’t discount the work he did at PC. Red has a long way to go to be in same conversation as Cooley.

Yeah, he won 20 games 7 out of 10 seasons at Providence, and made 7 out of 10 NCAA tournaments, plus an NIT.

For comparison, we only made the NCAA 4 times in that stretch with one NIT. And we only won 20 4 times in 10 seasons.

He’s done it 9 times in his career and inherited an absolute dumpster fire at Gtown. I would guess he’ll get them to 20 plus wins eventually as well.

Georgetown is a much better university than Syracuse right now academically. Not even close. Georgetown is in the 25-30 range, while Syracuse has fallen into the 70s. Georgetown is obviously in a location where your connections can get you lots of jobs. Syracuse has a good alumni network, and an on campus arena, but Georgetown under Cooley is probably going to be a better job than SU soon, if we let it slide much further. Lots of recruits in that region. Georgetown has as much history as we do. They are to basketball what we are to football - we helped people break color barriers. John Thompson is their Ernie Davis.

I hope you are kidding. Cooley is ten times the coach Autry is. Cooley did very well at Providence and won plenty. I am not sure who Autry’s comparable is as a coach but he’s not anywhere near Cooley.

Okay you weren’t kidding. Cooley is a proven winner and program builder. Autry has only proven he has absolutely zero clue about game situations, awareness and appears to be a deer in headlights late in games. Kenny Payne is probably a better comparison at this point.

Melo is a god in Syracuse. Why would he be done with SU forever just because another alumni who played a decade earlier than him was a bad coach and got fired? I don’t see the connection.

Kiyan is not the second coming of Carmelo. He is a top 40 high school player. You do not keep Autry based on what recruits he has coming in next year.

Melo has 170 mil / LaLa has 30 mil / Kiyan is worth 40 mil on his own.

It is not the on court we need from him. It’s their money. I don’t know how many posts are on this site right now about how our NIL is lacking and money is an issue yet people just keeping ignoring.

You think he doesn’t realize that Autry is having issues right now and this program is in the dumps. That’s all he knows because that’s how long we’ve been a mess. Yet a month ago he watched us beat Lemoyne by 2 and signed the contracts none the less.

Kiyan and Sadiq could’ve both clicked the easy button and went somewhere else with guaranteed tourney chances but they didn’t.

Agreed. I think Red will need to hire a legit experienced former head coach as an assistant for next season. A Phil Martelli type who’s been around the block. Also a young offensive mastermind.

Those of you mentioning Luke Murray - I think he’s just as responsible for back to back championships as Hurley. Came in and reinvented the offense.

Not crazy about having a uconn coach, but he would be the type of assistant you take a chance on.

Ok where do i sign up? If that is the gun to the head ultimatum that Carmelo would give to the university, then it's preposterous.

This is the dumb thinking that will set the program back another 10 years. It's a pro league now. Red stinks. It's objectively true based on what we're seeing here. Fire him and go find someone who can coach. This isn't hard. Not sure why we're making it into a geometry question.

His buyout must be smaller than a Tully's gift card considering he never coached before.

The next 20 years? Why? He hasn't even been donating the last 5 to get the program in shape and now because his son is coming for a couple years he is going to start donating millions annually after his graduation? I'm sorry but that is a fantasy land.

Also, this is not a negative on Melo, he can do whatever he wants with his money its just insane to think things will change after his kid leaves if his own legacy here wasn't enough to cement him as a forever benefactor.

Firing Red might actually HELP keep him, depending on how bad the season turns out. I think ND will be improved, but we just went 0-2 against possibly the two worst teams in the BE and ACC. If it's clear that the coaching is bad and the results are bad, the Anthonys will likely make an easy business decision.
