Coach Search Options after Autry

If that's their strategy then they must have money. But Someone is taking the high school kids.

Getting HS kids is great and all, but outside of the top 5-10 guys you aren’t getting anything guaranteed in year one. All the recent big winners outside of Duke have been with upperclassmen. If we can sign HS players and keep them great, but every year you have to re-recruit the entire team. It’s pretty much guaranteed that half of the players on the list you shared won’t finish with their initial school.

Wasn't really comparing them, just saying that what Hodgson has done doesn't stand out as being exceptional. Larger point is there are probably a couple dozen coaches with similar results.

South Florida was 25-8 just two years ago. Then 13-19. Now 17-8.

Siena was 4-28 two years ago. Then 14-18 and now 17-8.

Don't know how elite he is as a recruiter since South Florida has zero 2026 commitments. He's no Fran Brown.

There are ZERO players from the 25-8 roster that is currently on the USF squad, so the fact that they had a successful season 2 seasons ago doesn't mean anything. It's not like they kept everyone from that season and Hodgson is just picking up where they left off.

I said in another post in the last 6 years before Hodgson got their both Ark St and USF had 1 winning season... The 6 years before GMac got their Siena had 1 losing season...

So if you are looking at recent histories of the programs, then GMac was a place that had more recent success overall, but like I said, rosters almost change every season, so bringing up what teams' records were previously had no real impact unless you can show they kept a bunch of the core players, which didn't happen.

He was known for being an elite recruiter when he was the lead assistant coach for Alabama, and Oats he has a great reputation on the recruiting trail and is widely considered an outstanding recruiter. It could have zero recruits for 2026 for any number of reasons. Maybe he wont be their next year and isn't recruiting. Maybe he doesn't want to bring freshmen into a program like that and just looking at portal players because they will not get an impact as a freshman at USF with the money being thrown around.

Having a top 10 scoring offense in the entirety of college basketball isn't exceptional?

Hodgson is a very good recruiter. He was Oats top guy when he was under him. I’m not worried about him getting players if he gets here. After Schertz I prefer him to every other MM candidate.
I’ll be honest and I like Schertz a lot. This is more to speak to how high I am on Hodgson. It’s close very close on option 1. For Hodgson to have USF at the top of the American in year 1 is very very impressive.

I completely understand what you’re saying about his turnaround. But I guess my point is just that South Florida, based on their recent coaching hires, seems to be putting more resources and money into their program relative to the rest of the American conference. Similar to Saint Louis in the A-10 actually. Both schools sound like they have good NIL situations for mid majors. But I do agree that Hodgson would be a good choice if we can’t get Schertz. I also like Takayo Siddle at UNC Wilmington.

If the rumors are true Schertz is essentially locked up already and not here. Hodgson not a target from what I've heard but things change.
I will say that this inside info from Jeremy that Hodgson is not a target at all (as of last week) seemed absolutely wild to me, considering his track record and NY state ties. I would think he’d be one of the top 5 or top 3 guys that we’d target as the head coach. I mean, besides Schertz, who else is a no brainer for an interview? Skinn and Eric Olen, who I think Phil has mentioned, could be among the top targets, and there are some other guys like Siddle that I like, but it concerns me that Wildhack and athletic department folks or key boosters wouldn’t be looking closely at Hodgson. It gives me anxiety that they’re going to make a bad hire like Langel or Gmac.

Again keep in mind these things can flip on a dime sometimes. Either side may change their interest level or the top spot for either side could no longer be viable so there's a re-engagement etc.

And it will flip because each week more and more of the fan base will get around the idea of wanting Hodgson. Why? Because I think he’s the real deal. But you or the decision makers may not care what I think lol

Some background on Luke Murray for those interested. He’d be the only assistant coach we should consider, imo. He has a great offensive mind and schemes, is known as a great recruiter, and has been an assistant at not just one but several successful programs (UConn, Xavier, Louisville). Meaning, he knows what it takes to win and has been part of different staffs that have proven it. He was the guy who got Hurley to finally adopt a modern offense using analytics, lots of sets and motion, and to teach it all differently. They identified high IQ players, too. It can’t hurt that he has a famous father who’s a beloved actor. I first read the article below when it was as published, and it made me realize that Murray could be the guy. I still want Schertz, btw. But Murray could be our Tommy Lloyd.

Some choice quotes:
“It’s like learning a language,” Hurley says.

The new offense, heavy on off-ball screening and movement, won the Huskies a national title in 2023. Then last summer, Hurley essentially ripped up the UConn dictionary and came up with a new glossary of terms.

“We do that because of paranoia,” says assistant coach Luke Murray, who acts as the program’s offensive coordinator.

It’s probably not necessary, because UConn’s choreographed sets leave opponents’ heads spinning already. Defending UConn is like trying to multitask inside a classroom full of screaming children.

It takes three or four viewings to figure out exactly what’s happening. Now imagine trying to defend all of that in real-time.

“I’ve been studying the top offenses in the country in-depth for the past five years, and UConn’s combination of off-ball screening and ball movement within their sets and the number of sets that they run makes it the most complex offense that I’ve seen in that time,” says Jordan Sperber, a former video coordinator at New Mexico State who has become the X’s-and-O’s czar of college basketball, documenting it all in his weekly Hoops Vision newsletter. Sperber made a UConn offense video last month titled “Why This Offense is Basketball Poetry.”

“Their halfcourt offense is picturesque,” Xavier coach Sean Miller says.

At Rhode Island, Hurley had played a lot of four-and-around-one with a heavy dose of ball-screen offense. He carried the ball-screen concepts over to UConn, but now he had two posts on the floor. Spacing was a problem. Hurley wanted to go to a more modern approach with four perimeter players, and he brought on Murray to help him with the offense. Murray had been with Hurley in his first season as a college head coach at Wagner in 2010-11.

…Murray rejoined Hurley in April 2021, but they couldn’t institute the plan right away because Hurley felt loyalty to senior forward Isaiah Whaley. Also, point guard RJ Cole was best operating out of ball screens, so UConn played a traditional two-big lineup and leaned on the pick-and-roll.

But in the summer of 2022, the plan was put in place. The Huskies had an elite shooter in Jordan Hawkins, who was perfect as a marksman they could run off screens and use his gravity to open others. Then they also had the ideal stretch four in Karaban, a freshman who graduated early and showed up at semester break during the 2021-22 season.

“It was really clear that we were going to move to a much more of an off-ball screening identity,” Murray says.

Hurley and Murray studied European teams, stealing different concepts and packages that they could use.

“It’s not like a replica necessarily,” Murray says. “It’s just piecing together what makes the most sense for the group that we have.”

Murray says that the Huskies take a lot of pride in their defense, which ranks fourth nationally, but he estimates practices are a 65-35 split between offense and defense.

“You can have the greatest concepts in the world, but guys have to be able to execute them with intelligence, and with a knack for timing and spacing and really having a great understanding of how they’re being defended,” Murray says. “That’s one of the things that we try to emphasize a lot in game prep. Most scouting is based on what the other team is running. For us, we talk a lot about the way that the other team is guarding us.”

Yeah this guy could be a great coach, in terms of x's and o's.
Can he recruit?

Hodgson never had a losing season in 3 seasons with 2 different programs. GMac, while having a good season so far this year, was 14-18 last season. Hodgson, in his three years, has finished 4th, 1st, and is in 1st again with a new team (a team that was under .500 last year).

Hodgson also has a top 10 offense in all of college basketball
Hodgson is also known as an elite recruiter; GMac is not

Comparing him to GMac isn't fair to GMac at this point. GMac may turn out to be a better coach in the long run, but he is not even close to taking over a program like Syracuse right now. If GMac didn't go to Syracuse his name would never be mentioned.

3 seasons is not that impressive. Sorry.

Top 20-30 kids should be contributors.
But I get a sense that the portal is starting to make teams older on average.

Hodgson I think needs to make it to the NCAA tourney this year. This would be his third season as a head coach? with no NCAA bids doesn't wow anyone.
The Hodgson hate is comical. He’s coached Arkansas St and USF. Neither team screams ncaa expectations. I hear what you’re saying but it’s not like he is the HC at NC St.
