Coach Search Options after Autry

I don't get where Hop's power base is coming from? Old timers who want to reward him for being the good soldier when he got screwed over by JB? I assume we are giving him the courtesy of a conversation and will hire a much more modern candidate - at least for hoops coach. Again the AD hire is more important to me.

Just thinking, most of us think BH is the clear leader in the club house for the job. Yet, no one here has any idea who will be making the decision on the job. Since we don't know who will be making the decision, how can we think we know who they will pick? Just a thought.
My first thought to this is it’s probably a carryover from how Red was hired. Several folks emphasized it was not Wildhack who hired Red or, at least, his decision was highly influenced by the BoT, Boeheim situation, etc. to the point his hands were tied.

Why is gilardino so confident in the BH hire from his sources if your question is valid? Why would anyone think JW or the future AD has that decision making ability? I wouldn’t be surprised that people are assuming this “search committee” will be pulling the strings much like it did with Red.

Your question would make total sense if we weren’t talking about Syracuse and what they’ve done in the past.

I dont care about knowing who is making the decision or knowing who they will pick like its a game of lottery.

I care about them not making the wrong decision. Could be the AD, BoT, some special committee, Kermit the Frog, Steve Urkel, Thor, Johnny Bananas, and/or Josie and The Pussycats.

If the choice is Hodgson or Hop, this isn't an arguable decision.

I get your point, but guessing which way the decision will go is not what I care about. I don't care how they get there, who makes it, whatever --- this extension of JB's tenure into Red has to end now.

This talk of Hop (and to a lesser extent GMac) scares me. I’ve been an SU fan for 60+ years (yeah, I’m old) and really want to see us become nationally relevant again before I depart this place of wrath and tears. But hiring Hop or GMac ( or the Colgate coach, or an Ivy league guy) will tell me that rather than setting a goal of making the top 10 again, we’re willing to settle for trying to make the top 10 in the ACC. I hate to think we’re willing to accept being a middle of the ACC team that struggles to make the dance year after year but a hire like that would feel that way.

First, I would question how the big $$$$ got the big $$$$. Second, hopefully we get the same luck with Lykes and Hopper that they did getting the big $$$$.
Carmelo Anthony earned approximately $262.5 million to $266 million in NBA salary over his 19-season career, ranking among the top 50 all-time highest-paid players. Including lucrative endorsements with brands like Nike (Jordan Brand), his total career earnings exceeded $410 million by his retirement in 2023.

I would certainly hope that’s the case. But what’s the leverage play for Hop then at BC? He may beat us twice a year if he’s named HC there? There must be some sort of financial metric tied to it.
My first thought was that if we are worried about Hop beating us twice a year at B.C., are in bigger trouble than I fear we are. My second thought is that I'm not worried about Hop beating us with his coaching which should tell me at least, he isn't the guy we should hire.

The BOT makes all the final decisions. So, we do know who is making them to a certain extent. I would guess Chancellor one comes first no matter what though.

the selection is going to be made by a committee of su fans. they are going to ask you to head up that committee. ;)
It's funny you should say that. I have a friend on the BOT. I am really hoping they don't ask me for my advice on this.

If we put Lyke in charge as AD, ANYTHING is possible.

All that money just to use some of it to install a figurehead alum HC that flamed out at UW that will play Melo's kid who couldn't crack a 13 PER and has a 50% TS% and couldn't guard Ollie from Hoosiers?

This is where we're at? It's hilarious, I've been pining to get rid of inefficient players or use them differently and we have a fight on our hands for HC to basically have a guy come in and install Kiyan at the 2 guard to potentially make the position worse.

This is like what happens in the 'burbs with soccer clubs, but occurring at Syracuse with MBB.

I'm sure that Wildhack and the BOT understand the urgency of making the move and filling the spot almost immediately. I don't see how they push off making a decision no matter which candidate they choose. So, either Wildhack works in conjunction with the BOT, or the BOT takes full responsibility.

I don't see that Wildhack would be making any decisions on his own right now, but he could be part of the decision making process.
John described the process during his interview on Orange Nation the day his retirement was announced. He will make the recommendation to the Chancellor and the BoT Athletics Committee led by Steve Ballentine. First decision is whether to retain or replace the current coach. Following that and assuming Red is not retained I would expect a search committee would be named and will start with any succession plan John has drafted. He said early on that one of his core responsibilities is to maintain a succession plan for all of his key staff. I would expect individuals on that plan for men’s basketball have already been approached via back channels/agents and background checks may have been initiated. Committee’s recommendation would be presented to the AD, the Chancellor and the BoT for approval.
Specific individuals involved will depend on the way the dominos fall.
The only real deadline is that a new coach must be in place before the portal opens on April 7. Assume a new coach’s first actions would be to meet with the GM, agree on and approach any players they want to retain, then identify and rank portal targets, some of whom may be potential transfers from a previous program so timing of hire needs to accommodate that project plan.
Logically the sequence would be to hire a new Chancellor, then AD, then coach. New Chancellor would approve the hiring of the AD. The new AD would work with Wildhack to review committee recommendations on a new Coach.
If there are diversions from that sequence I would expect contingency plans are ready to go and the University will be very agile in completing the process and prepared to complete it with the existing staff alone if absolutely necessary.
Portal opens six weeks from tomorrow so dominos will need to start to fall quickly. New chancellor in next week to ten days. Retain/replace recommendation formalized (I suspect it’s already been made) by Wildhack by March 11-13. Search committee named the next day. New Coach hired within two weeks of those announcements.
