Coach Search Options after Autry

Didn’t realize Eddie dry rub was looking for kitchen staff…

I just hope people come to their senses before it is too late.
It sounds like a donor bidding war, whoever has the most resources wins. With the Melo camp figure for Hopkins for as far as I’m concerned would sky rocket Syracuse to the top 5 nationally, perhaps even number 1 for the immediate future when it comes to roster spending.

Door 1 - More money bad/failed coach
Door 2 - Less money up and coming coach

Door 2 100 times out of 100 for Syracuse
Door 1 100 times out of 100 for Melo and his son

Well, I think we would all agree that the talent level he has is not even in the same stratosphere as SU.
Doty could succeed at SU, but that is about it.
I think most who have actually watched GMAC coach this year would agree that he seems to have the goods to be a good coach. He makes in game changes, his teams play hard and fight and his team actually seems to have an identity. Watch his press conferences - he actually sounds like a head coach.
I also think if you make Red the head coach at Siena there is no way Siena would be sniffing 20 wins, be second in their conference only two years removed from having 4 wins and finishing last in their conference.
Exactly right!

I trust Melo and JB in that I believe they have the best interest of the program at heart. I don’t trust other big donors with no connection to basketball inserting themselves into basketball affairs for the first time. If the administration opts to go with Hopper, backed by a large coalition of donors and stakeholders, then let’s ride!!!!’ Hop 2027!!!!!

The way JB handled himself the last 10 years….. he knows what’s best, for sure.

Yup. Except we are not talking about a reduction. If I make $100 (close) and you make 555% more than me, do you make nothing?

$100 is a lot less than I currently make so even 555% of that would make me feel like I make nothing. Considering how I hard I work while trying to keep up with this thread.

It's easy to say that you want BH over Hop and his $30 million NIL. Coaching matters.

But would you still take BH over Hop if I guaranteed you that Syracuse had a top 10 roster next year (and the year after) provided by Melo's funding?
Can we be a top 10 roster with Kiyan at the two.

Wes might be the least plugged in national media guy.
Wow are you off on this one. He wasn't claiming he had insight. He was just endorsing him because of familiarity with the program which he prioritizes. But to say he's the least plugged in? I'd delete your post.

So at the end of the day, who is making the actual hire? What is this persons knowledge of actual basketball coaching styles (play designs, game management) Why do I feel like that person has less knowledge than 90% of the board here?

Like they say in the nfl (get football people to make the decisions) who are these people at su?

To me it seems like they lack that knowledge to put it kindly

I don’t feel like getting yelled at, I’m just asking a question - does anyone feel that coaches can improve and win after they have failed ? There’s a lot of cases that prove this theory to be correct. Hop had one stint that went well and then not so well. Why did it go well first couple of years ? Something he did had to work. And then I know there were some injuries and stuff like that and then recruiting wasn’t ideal. But just curious because what if it worked out ? Haven’t heard one positive possible outcome yet lol
I promise I’m not yelling at you bulldog I appreciate everything you provide always but we’re just angry at the situation in general. Most people think it’s mad at just the last 2-3 years or whatever but there’s many of us who have been calling this the last 10 years or so have gone, to almost a perfect T.

he inherited a decent roster with returning players such as matisse Thybulle and Noah Dickerson two aall pac performers, and brought in big time recruits in naz carter, quade green and Jaylen Nowell. That’s that’s two current nba players and a bunch of high level recruits and college players.
They also took advantage of a Terrible PAC-12. The pac 12 was ranked 6th in conference rpi, just ahead of the American(also 3 tournament teams) in 2017-18 with only 3 squads making the dance(zona, ASU, UCLA who all lost in the first round). In 2018-19, hops best year, the pac-12 was EVEN WORSE. They finished 7th in rpi BEHIND the American. Again, only had 3 teams make the dance, including Washington’s only appearance under Hopkins while the American got one more in the dance, with 4 total. This is all before hop landed 3 more 5 stars and 2 nba current nba players in his tenure and followed that up with a 70-84 record in 5 seasons.
He was a failure at a worse school, worse job, and worse conference but somehow has a chance to fall backwards into a better school, job and conference simply because our blood lust for nepotism and competence. Coaches, players, any one can improve at anything but you don’t do that with almost instant gratification, it’s earned. You have to grind your way back. Nowhere in any world has Hop grinded his way back to earning this job. Of course there’s cases that go against the grain(actually based on that AI rundown it may not be at this level of college ball lol) but majority of the time if they failed, they’re gone fail again.

And who knows the most about basketball in our area? How about JB. You want him making the decisions?

.
You mean Romar’s players that went 9-23 the year before Hop and ignoring that four of the top eight players on Hop’s first team were freshmen? Let’s do a little research before we post.
Even more impressive that Hop took “Romar’s players” from nine wins to 27 in two years, isn’t it?
this isn’t the win you think it is when the entire universe knows that Romar is one of the worst power 6 coaches in recent history. Romar brought in big time talent, and couldn’t do a damn thing(still went to 6 tournaments in 15 years, compared to Hopkins 1 in 7!).Hopkins brought in big time talent, and also some existing big time talent, and outside of one year in the worst pac 12 in its history, did absolutely nothing but fail just like Romar.
And the facts behind his success at USF are that he has a NET of 52, his best wins are at home against Utah State and at Tulsa and USF has more Q3 losses than Syracuse this year.
Not saying he wouldn’t be very successful here because I don’t know. But the facts are the facts. He’s had a very good mid major season but if he loses in the conference tournament he’ll be watching the NCAAs just like us.
and this reply proves my exact point I’ve been making for weeks about multiple posters people close to the situation. Completely ignorant and clueless to real world of college basketball.

Red’s not being retained. What about last season is relevant?

You share the opinion of most fans, which is justified. Its a fans opinion though. Im sharing the opinion of those who have performed the job successfully and either acclimated to NIL and the portal, or retired.
”performed the job successfully” HAH this is exactly why this program is where it is because they’re so far up their own cavity they’re high off the fumes of their own arrogance.

Well, it's not like BH isn't attempting the same thing. And all Hopkins is doing is making the case for why he is the best man for the job. This is what I bring to the table in other words. Just as we all do or have done on any job application.
the most money isn’t the “best man” for the job, espeically if all you bring to the table is money, not ya know actually being able to coach successfully. it’s putting makeup over an ugly face and hoping the blind fools who need glasses (the dumb alums who will slurp anything orange) will think it’s actually pretty.

Outside of Syracuse, I wonder how much college basketball Melo watched this year? I mean, he is the expert making the coaching hire, so I imagine he has gone through hours of tape and watched all the up-and-coming coaches to give Syracuse the best coaching hire he could. He can tell me what kind of offensive and defensive systems everyone runs etc. I am sure he has done this homework.

And his homework led him to Hopkins, a coach who was fired from his P4 job with a .527 winning percentage and the tournament only once in 6 years despite multiple NBA players on his roster. That coach was so heavily thought of in the college ranks, he didn't get another job, so he went to be an assistant NBA coach where that NBA team was awful and then was let go from that position and now is in charge of player development for a losing team. After doing a national search, Melo said yes man, that is the guy for sure to lead Syracuse. I know it.
i dont know why people would put their unwavering trust in melo to make the best choice when it coming to winning to begin with. Did no one follow his nba career?

Finally caught up after 3 hours. What a ride!

Wow, what a monumentally horrible decision the administration is preparing to step into. This is going to fail spectacularly. If Hop was "surprised" at the backlash when he went 4-5 as JAB's caretaker in 2015-16, watch what happens if they struggle in Vegas again.

I can envision a guy like Otzelberger or Hoiberg reaching out to Melo and saying he heard they had $30 million (and growing) war chest and would be tempted to jump ship. "Sorry, that's only for my boy, Hop. Good luck in Ames/Lincoln next year!"

I will say this, however. The SUAD and BOT are full of people whose words are their bonds. They said Hop was the the Coach In "Waiting". Now it looks like they are gonna make good on that promise.
