Who would coach offense under Mike Hopkins? Can they poach Luke Murray or someone with a similar reputation for 2 million a year and give them the AHC title? If you want to be a sure elite program you can’t skimp out on coaching. Hopkins would need a proven offensive genius with him. Fran got Vince Kehres, Hopkins needs to get a guy like that for offense specifically and immediately. Like the system and culture matters so much in producing a consistently winning college basketball team and program.

He might make a great coach, who knows. There’s a hell of a lot more to being a great coach than knowing ball and saying the right things. Hop knows BB and says the right things.
I just think the whole Hopkins coaching at Washington was weird. Is he my first second or third choice for HC? No.

But if he ends up coming here with a boat load of NIL behind him which Bulldog04 eluded to, then I think he deserves a second chance, as does everyone on planet earth.

Regardless of the outcome, my #1 is Schertz, Then Hodgson.

If it comes down to Hopkins. Is it the end of the world? No… absolutely not. Would it be a disappoint? Yes of course. Hop hasn’t proved he can be a head coach outside of one season.

But I will say. Hopkins is NOTTTT Red. Let’s make that one thing clear. You will absolutely see a better product of basketball. Especially with the boatload of nil being lined up for him.

It’s not the end of the world folks. Take a deep breath, play it by ear.

Breeding negativity into the world always results in a negative outcome in one way or another.

Hop had zero vision for offense when he was at Washington, and he also stubbornly stuck with mostly zone. I don’t know what to say here. He’s a dynamic and charismatic personality but he’s proven that he’s not an innovator or even towards the leading edge on modern college basketball systems. I get that he could have learned a thing or two in the NBA but I tend to think not. The game is different on that level b/c of the talent, and an old dog rarely learns new tricks. Hodge or Schertz would be perfect.
Agree 100%, Hop will continue to do what he is familiar with.
The only two alum who I think would make good staff members are Devendorf and Triche. Devo has the edge to his game and personality that the program is lacking.

Brandon seems to be building a really good second career training local players and improving their skills. He's another crafty guard and smart player who I think would be an asset to the program.
I've always liked both guys, but again, are there not other coaches or other staff members at other schools who would be perfect if we could identify them?

I’ll start by saying, I prefer Hodgson to all candidates. But, all of you thinking Red to Hop is a lateral move, I mean give me a damn break. If we beat Hofstra, BC, VT this yr, we are talking about the bubble. It’s not that hard to make the tourney anymore. Hop is much brighter than Red, and with a boat load more money, we can be pretty darn good. Hop will bring in the right assistants. He was trying to cater towards the Washington crowd with his assistants over there. Larry Brown was supposed to join his staff one year. Maybe he’ll come to cuse with him. We will all end up happy with Hop if he gets that kind of money.

Can’t believe your getting dislikes for a rational and good take!

Usually we just dislike your posts the other 95 percent of the time…

;)

I will say one thing for Devo. No one who plays for him is going to be a cream puff - he will expect those guys to work hard and have a never surrender attitude.

W 30mm NIL why not

It’s not even necessarily those 2…nor just Lyke/NC. One of the most important pieces of the decision making process has been in Milan. Everyone watches too much Game of Thrones. This isn’t Winterfell and the Red Keep
What? We're going to Keep Red?!

Oh sorry never mind I misread that

Bright, charismatic, motivator, CEO type of program leader who will attract donors and Athletes.
I agree he will need help on the X&O side but I'm also sure that his assistant coaches will be an upgrade over our current staff.
NIL is king in today's landscape.
Personally between the candidates listed so far the one that brings the most funds is not a bad bet.
I'm sure that Hop has learned a ton over the years. He was also Pac coach of the year twice.
His overall record at Washington was a winning record and Washington hasn't exactly been tearing it up regardless of who has been coaching them.
I do like the guy from Florida and his style of play. Bottom line
Jimmy and Joe's matter. JB was never considered a good X and O guy early on but he sure as heck had the talent and that carried him.
I get the concern over Hop but if his war chest is significantly bigger than anyone else he would be my choice. Talent wins games.

He said nothing mentioned to BOT or the athletics committee and that nobody from athletics is currently aware of this

Going too far to say this looks like a heavy dose of damage control ? It never hurts to put some smoke out there to help the overall cause. It’s interesting they responded to this as they did. If there was a good deal of truth and it forced a moment of reflection and clarity then so be it.

Making sure it’s well known that many are paying close attention to all this is a good thing.

true but I like hearing at least one entertaining and informed guy doing the color commentary for ACC games. I'd prefer to have him doing all our games.

I’m shocked you would have this take.

Did you see who he had on staff at UW?? One now at USC, two out of coaching now and another a HC at a community college….

If you are going to be a CEO type then you need to bring in that staff identifying who is going to get the job done right. If he’s the CEO and is getting help to fill out his staff the right way then it makes little sense why not to go with BH as many are saying.

If you want the guy who has proven success, hands down it's Chris Mack. He's been to nine NCAA tournaments. One Elite Eight and three Sweet Sixteens and overall NCAAT record of 11-9. I'm surprised more people haven't been on his bandwagon.
Yeah, he’s someone I've suggested as well. I think he’ll be a hot name next year if and when he gets Charleston back on top. Personally, the guy rubs me the wrong way and seems kind of shady, but he’s certainly a proven winner.

If the coach you are hiring comes with an expectation that he needs to hire great assistants because he’s not good with X’s and O’s, he’s absolutely not the right guy.
You have a fantastic point there. But the war chest to make Syracuse a resource blue blood for the next few years is contingent on Mike Hopkins being in charge. Michigan did a similar thing in the way they are investing in Dusty, but you know Dusty took FAU to the final four and another tournament appearance after. So that’s the cards being dealt right now. I’m saying he needs to outsource the offensive and defensive systems to proven gurus on both sides of the ball.

Anyone who’s disliking Eric devendorf being on staff should be ashamed of themselves. Guy knows ball, flat out. He always says the right thing.
i love devo as much as the next person. but people ask why hasn't hop gotten other job offers (fair question). why hasn't devo? the year he was here his title was training or something. he was at detroit mercy for a year and he was some special asst to the hc. all this time, why isn't he an asst coach someplace?

Yeah, doesn't add up. There are seven D1 basketball schools in Michigan, five if you suppose that UM and MSU are reserved for the creme de la creme or close connections.
