the truth is that you are both right. You have to have a boatload of Nil to be who we want to be and who we think we are. But all the money in the world doesn't make a bad coach a good coach. We need both. Somehow, and I can't see how, we have to merge these two sides. LOL I would give it a go but after my attempt to get AW back in good grace, I will let someone else carry the ball on this one.

If you are going to be a CEO type then you need to bring in that staff identifying who is going to get the job done right. If he’s the CEO and is getting help to fill out his staff the right way then it makes little sense why not to go with BH as many are saying.

No idea but im assuming he was not provided significant funds to form a staff at UW. Or at least not near whats been suggested in this thread
 
Can anyone please explain for those of us who are less knowledgeable what happened with Hop in Washington? Why so many have decided he was a failure as a head coach and we would be unleashing the apocalypse if he was hired here?

I know he was his leagues coach of the year his first two years. He went 48-22 those years.
Seems to me that is pretty damn good.

Then came Covid and his record for those 2 years was horrific but I dont blame him for that - there were horrific records all over the country. The two Covid years were a combined 20-38. Again I completely discount all of this.

The next 3 years he went 50-46. Respectable, nothing great.

Since he left Washington went 13-18, and are currently 14-14. This is Red level of ineptitude.

Seems to me there is more going on here than Hop suddenly forgot how to coach.

Listen, I have no problem believing BH is a better coach, as is Scherz.
I also believe GMAC is better than Hop.

But nothing in his Washington record suggests he is the second coming of Red.
You don't win coach of the year in your league, let alone twice, if you are a bad coach.

Again, Hop is not my first choice, or even my second choice.
But if he can bring twice or three times the NIL money as BH, I think he has enough coaching ability to get results and get us back to the NCAAT.

I guess what I am trying to say is I am not going to refuse to renew my season tickets if they choose Hop and the higher NIL.

First two years did have some of Romar’s guys but also a really light schedule too.

BIG 12 roster spend was right in line with ours with the exception of BYU. People are getting blinded by the money too much. Coaching is more important once you get to a certain level. We also committed to players this year we shouldn’t have. See JJ.

So if these are the top options:

Bad coach (without naming names) + tier 1 NIL
or
Good coach (without naming names) + bottom tier 2/top tier 3 NIL


I would choose the bottom choice 100 out of 100 because it would be more consistent, as NIL dollars couldn't be relied upon year after year, but a good coach with systems can get the best out of the talent he is able to get and the lower NIL dollars will remain consistent.

I would do the same as well and hopefully overtime showing the value of good coaching you get the resources increased. It’s frustrating because Syracuse should be able to have both immediately.

Look at Hops record after NIL started because that is when his record went downhill and the University in shambles after he left is an indictment on the systems he had in place both on and off the court.

I think Red is staying on as head recruiter and offensive consultant to round out the staff

Stale defensive system, poor offensive scheme, getting "less out of more" talent, diminishing returns compared to first 2 years on the job etc

I don’t disagree, but if he had capable guards with those two bigs I doubt he goes 15-17. I’ve said from day one is offense was dreadful.

That would mean Jim would have to work in practice and go on recruiting visits and scout recruits games. That what he had his assistants do.
