Coach Search Options after Autry

Interesting.

It can be done before the season ends.

That statement sounds familiar...

What did I miss today? Is it official? Are we getting the band back together?

Hop as head
Hart as assistant
Griff staying on to keep some continuity
Bernie comes back to work with the big men
Jimmy and Buddy as Grad assistants
Etan as ball boy

Lets commit to it and go all the way!

Can anyone please explain for those of us who are less knowledgeable what happened with Hop in Washington? Why so many have decided he was a failure as a head coach and we would be unleashing the apocalypse if he was hired here?

I know he was his leagues coach of the year his first two years. He went 48-22 those years.
Seems to me that is pretty damn good.

Then came Covid and his record for those 2 years was horrific but I dont blame him for that - there were horrific records all over the country. The two Covid years were a combined 20-38. Again I completely discount all of this.

The next 3 years he went 50-46. Respectable, nothing great.

Since he left Washington went 13-18, and are currently 14-14. This is Red level of ineptitude.

Seems to me there is more going on here than Hop suddenly forgot how to coach.

Listen, I have no problem believing BH is a better coach, as is Scherz.
I also believe GMAC is better than Hop.

But nothing in his Washington record suggests he is the second coming of Red.
You don't win coach of the year in your league, let alone twice, if you are a bad coach.

Again, Hop is not my first choice, or even my second choice.
But if he can bring twice or three times the NIL money as BH, I think he has enough coaching ability to get results and get us back to the NCAAT.

I guess what I am trying to say is I am not going to refuse to renew my season tickets if they choose Hop and the higher NIL.

Look at Hops record after NIL started because that is when his record went downhill and the University in shambles after he left is an indictment on the systems he had in place both on and off the court.

I think Red is staying on as head recruiter and offensive consultant to round out the staff

Stop making sense.

Stale defensive system, poor offensive scheme, getting "less out of more" talent, diminishing returns compared to first 2 years on the job etc

He had good guards early in his tenure and still couldn’t score. Can we just admit he’s clueless when it comes to offense. It’s all midrange.
I don’t disagree, but if he had capable guards with those two bigs I doubt he goes 15-17. I’ve said from day one is offense was dreadful.

WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS BOARD IF HOP BRINGS BACK JAMES ARTHUR ON THAT BENCH WITH HIM!
That would mean Jim would have to work in practice and go on recruiting visits and scout recruits games. That what he had his assistants do.

We can't pay a ass't coach 2 million a year. That is fantasy land.
If Etan says Weitsman can be the AD surely we can.

Someone should put up a poll to see if the fans would prefer Luke’s or AW as the AD. Now that would be some good banter.

Hurley has been ok and he lets Murray plan and run the offense. His main attribute is intensity
“he lets Murray plan and run the offense.”
This is wildly overstated. Hurley empowered Murray and they structured recruiting and player acquisition around their offensive (and defensive) identity. Hurley is very much involved with every detail. My issue is that Hop had 7 years to modernize his offense and implement a vision or hire an offensive guru and he failed. Unless Hop comes in with a brilliant roadmap and vision for the program—including upgrading the staff and infrastructure from top to bottom and modernizing the offense based on analytics and advanced stats—then this is just putting lipstick on a pig. Even with that, Hop never implemented such a system and has no experience doing anything other than what JB did at Syracuse, so we shouldn’t even be entertaining this idea.

Nah, JAB could be the guy that carries the clipboard. Or, he could be the guy that carrys the whiteboard.

OX, don't tease.

Is it Al McGuire?

Or is it Al Skinner?

Or is it Al Attles?

Al Roker

I don't think Mike was coaching when Nil started.

"NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) in college basketball officially began on July 1, 2021. On this date, the NCAA adopted an interim policy allowing all NCAA athletes to receive compensation for endorsements, appearances, and business ventures, reversing decades of amateurism rules"

  • When: July 1, 2021, when the interim NIL policy went into effect.
  • Who: Various, including Rutgers' Geo Baker, who signed a deal with a restaurant chain on the first day, alongside others like Trey Murphy III (Virginia) and D'Shawn Schwartz (George Mason).

"Based on the July 1, 2021, start of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era, specific, public "first" deals for individual Washington Huskies basketball players were not widely highlighted at that exact moment, as many athletes began signing smaller, local deals simultaneously."

Say Hop is coach and spends 12 million on a roster next year. I would expect nothing less than a top 10 ranking, a top 3 seed, and a top 3 ACC finish. Anything else would be a failure. There would be no grace period. No excuses. It’s win now only.

Should be easy to get the players up to speed, he doesn't have any offensive systems to install

Why do you completely discount all of this? Did he have to play 4-on-5 during Covid? And even if you want to use Covid as an excuse, how did it affect college sports for 2 years? How many other guys are we looking at that went 5-21 during those "covid" years? I'll hang up and listen.
