Coach Search Options after Autry

circular logic? you're struggling with this. my point isn't whether we have $1m in nil or $10m or whether it's good, bad or indifferent. my point has zero to do with what we have. only that a candidate will ASK. you're making this much more difficult than needed for something so simple.
Lol -- sure. What if I told you that a contract in principle was already in place with red's replacement, and the athletic department is simply waiting for the season to play out? Which would mean that question has already been asked, and answered, and isn't the insurmountable hurdle you keep making it out to be?

Stay tuned.

This^^^. We haven’t made the tourney in five years with JB and then the continuity hire coaching staff. Why would anyone donate to that? It’s a freakin miracle we had a $8-9 million budget last season. A proven new coach with a fresh vision like Schertz or Hodgson will make a huge national splash, light up and excite the fanbase again, and bring some new and previous donors out of the woodwork. We’ve all been dying for some hope these past 5-6 years. I think the NIL train can get revved up with the right coaching hire.

A bunch of old guard logic is about to get flipped on its head.

I can't wait.

Where did I say insurmountable hurdle? lol. Putting words in my mouth. But if what you say is true, thanks for proving my point that the question was asked.

What old guard logic? lol. A simple question was asked. And you wrote novels defending something that wasn’t said.

Gerry learned from JB very well. Shoats and Doty haven’t sat a second lol.
They only have 7 players available. He sat both Doty and Shoats with just seconds left in the first half - I had to laugh. There was only enough time for a single possession. Well, it worked for them.

It will excite many of the fanatical fanbase here but most of the fan base will say “who are they? “. If it excites the big money people who donate to NIL is what is important. The rest of the fanbase will find out about them when Mike or Donna does an article naming the candidates and telling everyone who they are and why they are being considered. There are about, let’s say, 19,000 season ticket holders who are big SU fans but I seriously doubt most would know the St Louis Billikens or South Florida Bulls, less who their coaches are.

I think you’re underestimating the intelligence of our fans a bit.

Can someone explain to me why St Bonnie would publicly say the next hoops coach will not be making anything close to the guy they are retiring? Doing it is one thing, publicly telling people seems odd to me.
While I only read a brief blurb about that, I'm guessing they are planning to use the savings in coaching salary to supplement as much of the $20 million revenue sharing as they can. So the potential coaches can decide if taking less themselves will help them be more successful in the long run.

Yep, delineating the type of job and pond they are swimming in.

Looking for a young coach that will like their rev share outlay for success in their league and view the job as a viable stepping stone.

I don’t see a source leaking this info to Rothstein as the same as publicly telling everyone. It’s not like they put out a press release saying we are going cheaper.

That being said, $600k plus a $3-4 NIL budget might be more appealing for a coach looking to use St Bonnie’s as a launchpad to a bigger job?

Yes, a lot of the more casual SU basketball fans won’t know the top candidates, but they will hear all about them from the local media and social media, directly from the horse’s mouth once he’s hired, and see the reaction from the national media to the hire, and will hopefully be inspired. Look at Fran Brown—and he didn’t even have any head coaching experience or Hodgson’s track record when he was hired.

Orange Nation is also much bigger than the local season ticket holders. I don’t live in Syracuse anymore (but grew up there as a huge SU fan)—and that’s true for a lot of my extended family and some friends. We’re die-hards and attend games on the road, come home for games sometimes, watch every game on TV, buy merchandise, etc. But the some of their interest has waned (and frustration skyrocketed) with all the mediocrity. So there’s a lot of folks like that who are hungry to see winning SU basketball again that we can bring back to the table.

It’s not a matter of intelligence. I don’t think if an SU fan doesn't know the coach of a member of smaller mid-level conferences that aren’t local like the American Athletic Conference or A10 conference, is dumb. That’s insulting and I realize most people aren’t into basketball overall, not just SU, as much as I am - they are normal, 😀have different priorities, but are still avid SU fans. I was asked by a person, a long time season ticket holder who I had heard could be the next coach and when I said Hodgson’s name and college, USF , they asked me who, why and also was USF, the Univ of San Francisco. I was the dumb one forgetting that both universities have the same initials and could be confused. As I said they will be educated by the local media and they then will decide.

What's Gmac making at Siena? That would be a good hire for the Bonnies...
I think GMAC's offers will depend on whether he gets Siena to the NCAAT.

If he can pull that off, St Bonaventure, Providence and BC would probably kick the tires on it.
If he could win a first round game in NCAAT, the offers will no doubt increase.

As I said before, I understand why he wont be hired here this year.
But, boy, did TPTB shoot themselves in the foot picking Red over Gerry 3 years ago.

I think gmac to Providence would be a great fit. The big east is a little down he can win there. I'm assuming hes catholic too.

No offense but you don't make a decision about who your next head coach is based on one game. If those three want GMac the outcome of tommorrows game does not matter to them.

Siena's most recent 990 for 2024 had Carmen Maciariello making $370k. I'm assuming Gerry is making a little bit more than that. Bonaventure would be a pay bump, but apparently not as much as you'd think. Schmidt was making $1.5M and the rumor is that they are looking to hire someone at a salary half that amount so that they can put more into revenue sharing for NIL.

I thought the same thing when I read it. Maybe they decided to thin out the head coaching candidates inquiring about the job. 😀

That's what I was getting at. If they offer him 600 plus I would assume he takes it...
