Coach Search Options after Autry

If Gerry wants the job but gets passed up for BH and goes to a lower P4 or a mid-major, then Gerry will likely still be willing to come to Cuse in 3 or 4 years, if BH treats the program like a stepping stone.

Realistically though, there are only 5 to 10 programs max that are very clearly better jobs than Cuse when things are going really well. Regardless, BH doing extremely well is a good "problem."

If the job comes up again in a few years, the likelihood he says, "I'd rather be at a school like BC than Cuse" is really not something I'm remotely concerned about. He will likely come if and when the opportunity presents itself again.
Yup said this before if BH had a heart attack on the court next year and died GMac would parachute in to finish the season for us before we even had to ask.

Meaning we are feeling very good about one of the more obvious candidates, or no chance he is interested.
Been a few comments here and there saying there’s a candidate that is not on anyone’s radar and at the same time our fanbase would be very happy about. There’s usually one comment like this per day buried in the 400 pages of doom and gloom so a lot of times no one thinks twice about it.

Personally I’m an optimist on this stuff.

If it were $29m I don’t think any of the talking heads would be bringing his name up in any scenario for any destination. And that is an absurd amount of money, certainly more than I would see an ISU putting into a contract. I’ve seen $4m several times. Guessing that is the right figure.
$29m buyout? Who does he think he is, Chelsea Clinton?

I really hope the Syracuse President and AD aren't thinking this way because the current reality is coaching pay, NIL, and the ability to compete in the conference are what are driving coaching decisions now, not "national profile". The Syracuse decision makers need to provide a plan (financial, support, and commitment) to the coaching candidates to demonstrate Syracuse can and will compete with the top schools in the ACC as Syracuse has not been doing that. Remember, Syracuse has had one top 4 regular season finish in the ACC since joining and that was the first season, 13 seasons ago.
that's incredible, but what amazes me more is that Syracuse has never won more than 1 game in any ACCT and been bounced in it's first game too many times worth remembering, it is complete ineptitude.

$29m buyout according to USA Today. Some places have reported a $4m buyout
The buyout INCREASES every year? That doesn't make sense to me. Unless I am not understanding the graphic, something's wrong here.

Not trying to scare anyone, but some people don’t understand how far Syracuse has fallen.

Where we stand today in the national landscape, we cannot pull a coach of Otzelberger’s status.

That being said, number 1, we absolutely can get back to where we want to be. And secondly, we are still arguably the best job open, which is why it’s so important that we go out and get the best guy.

So I don’t have an X account anymore but a buddy of mine said the Lally foundation X account is blocking people who have responses related to all of this trying to get their attention and call out the lack of coordination…. It’s the fans fault so let’s shut them up from calling things out..
Bad look. I wasn't fond of AW but beginning to think he had a point about his criticisms of them. So I owe him an anonymous online apology.

Ahh good post, no one has put it quite like that. With that foresight of knowledge, that will temper my disappointment if/when Gerry doesn’t get it

Yeah, sorry but like, Otz is not happening, guys. It's Hodgson, then the field. Don't expect us to make it to the field...
No offense dude but you go after him anyway and get him in the room for an interview. Imagine when BH’s agent hears TJ may even be hearing us out. Right now they think it’s just BH or gmac or bust for us.

TJ even being discussed changes a lot of the dynamics in the conversation.

Quick everyone. Who knows people in Iowa?

Guess No one. Personally if not for college hoops I’m not sure anyone would even know if it’s a real place or not
From a few hours away and live in Big 12 country. I get that Otz's buyout is low for how good he is, but I don't see where SU comes in unless we're just kicking tires. There just aren't a lot of great openings this year so I'd think that if he wants to leave ISU (which I'm not sure of either way) he would wait for a bigger job to open. I don't have any inside info, but if his camp has expressed interest in Cuse I would bet on it being a leverage play to bring his salary up to market in a down year for openings.

He's a longtime Hoiberg disciple and has roots in Wisconsin, but he's coached all over the country and is clearly excellent. He's brought talent from all over the world to Ames which is no small feat. His wife is a former WNBA player from Australia, so no family ties there. The AD who hired him is still at ISU. I think he would be a home run hire and I guess you never say never but I just don't see it.

I don't think we have fallen as much as you think. We still are a brand name in this sport. I know a prominent Duke booster he can't wait to see me to let me know he's stolen one of our recruits. We are like the Lakers the sport is better when we're good.

Lower down on the page, there is a link to another screen where the fields in the table are defined.

SCHOOL BUYOUT OWED AS OF APRIL 1, 2025: Amount school would owe coach if he is fired without cause on April 1, 2025.

This is the only contract detail that I could find regarding what would happen if he took a different job:
If Otzelberger leaves Iowa State to take another job as a college basketball coach elsewhere, or to become an NBA head coach or general manager, Otzelberger would owe Iowa State $4 million. That money would be owed within 90 days of his effective date of termination, according to the contract.
If Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard leaves his current role, Otzelberger's buyout drops to $2 million.

He definitely had a point. AW is AW and you can see why it's easy for people to go against him, but it takes two to tango. This board was very one-sided during that episode. I was wondering if people would change their minds or at least see it in a different light.

Thanks. That makes much more sense.
